Conventionally these signals (annual and semi-annual) are derived by least-squares fitting of harmonic terms with a constant amplitude and phase. In reality, however, such seasonal signals are modulated, i.e. they will have a time-variable amplitude and phase. Recently, Davis et al. (2012) proposed a Kalman filter based approach to capture the stochastic seasonal behavior of geodetic time series. In this study, a non-parametric approach, singular spectrum analysis (SSA) is introduced. It uses time domain data to extract information from short and noisy time series without prior knowledge of the dynamics affecting the time series. A prominent benefit is that obtained trends are not necessarily linear and extracted oscillations can be amplitude and phase modulated. In this work, the capability of SSA for analyzing time-variable seasonal signals from GPS time series is investigated. We also compare SSA-based results to two model-based results, i.e. least-squares analysis and Kalman filtering. Our results show that singular spectrum analysis could be a viable and complementary tool for exploring modulated oscillations from GPS time series. Based on the SSA-derived seasonal signals, we look into the effects of the input noise variances in the framework of Kalman filtering. Two Kalman filtering based approaches with different process noise models are compared over 79 GPS sites. We find that the basic Kalman filtering technique with the input noise model suggested by Davis et al. (2012) turns out to be optimal. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Over the past decades it has been shown that remotely sensed auxiliary data have a potential to increase the precision of key estimators in sample-based forest surveys. This thesis was motivated by the increasing availability of remotely sensed data, and the objectives were to investigate how this type of auxiliary data can be used for improving both the design and the estimators in sample-based surveys. Two different modes of inference were studied: model-based inference and design-based inference. Empirical data for the studies were acquired from a boreal forest area in the Kuortane region of western Finland. The data comprised a combination of auxiliary information derived from airborne LiDAR and Landsat data, and field sample plot data collected using a modification of the 10th Finnish National Forest Inventory. The studied forest attribute was growing stock volume.
The results of this thesis are important for the development of forest inventories to meet the requirements which stem from an increasing number of international commitments and agreements related to forests.Numéro de notice : 14978 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Thèse étrangère Note de thèse : PhD : Forest sciences : University of Helsinki : 2015 En ligne : Over the past decades it has been shown that remotely sensed auxiliary data have [...] Format de la ressource électronique : URL Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=78366 Subspace-based technique for speckle noise reduction in SAR images / Norashikin Yahya in IEEE Transactions on geoscience and remote sensing, vol 52 n° 10 tome 1 (October 2014)

[Termes IGN] image radarRésumé : (Auteur) Image-subspace-based approach for speckle noise removal from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is proposed. The underlying principle is to apply homomorphic framework in order to convert multiplicative speckle noise into additive and then to decompose the vector space of the noisy image into signal and noise subspaces. Enhancement is performed by nulling the noise subspace and estimating the clean image from the remaining signal subspace. Linear estimator minimizing image distortion while maintaining the residual noise energy below some given threshold is used to estimate the clean image. Experiments are carried out using synthetically generated data set with controlled statistics and real SAR image of Selangor area in Malaysia. The performance of the proposed technique is compared with Lee and homomorphic wavelet in terms of noise variance reduction and preservation of radiometric edges. The results indicate moderate noise reduction by the proposed filter in comparison to Lee but with a significantly less blurry effect and a comparable performance in terms of noise reduction to wavelet but with less artifacts. The results also show better preservation of edges, texture, and point targets by the proposed filter than both Lee and wavelet and less required computational time. [Termes IGN] données topographiquesRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents results from a user study on experimental maps created for outdoor activities and demonstrates methods suitable for analyzing the map survey data. The first goal of the study was to find out to what degree the experimental maps created for the study satisfy the needs of map users in general. The second was a detailed exploration of opinions on the different map types to look for trends related to age, frequency of map use, or amount of time spent in nature. A third goal was to gauge interest and willingness to pay for experimental maps as printed products. In addition, the article demonstrates how cross-tabulation and correspondence analysis can be used to conduct versatile quantitative analysis and interpret map survey data. The survey results suggest that the conventional topographic-map-like products for outdoor activities currently offered by map publishers should be supplemented by new kinds of maps to attract and educate digital natives to become active map users. At the same time, the quality of information and representation of terrain accessibility on maps for outdoor activities must not be compromised simply to fulfil the broad-based needs of map users.
