[Termes IGN] strate végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents a robust approach for characterization of multi-layered forests using airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. Fuel mapping or biomass estimation requires knowing the diversity and boundaries of the forest patches, as well as their spatial pattern. This includes the thickness of the main vegetation layers, but also the spatial arrangement and size of the individual plants that compose each stratum. In order to decompose the ALS point cloud into genuine 3-D segments corresponding to individual vegetation features, such as shrubs or tree crowns, we apply a statistical approach based on the mean shift algorithm. The segments are progressively assigned to a forest layer: ground vegetation, understory or overstory. Our method relies on a single biophysically meaningful parameter, the kernel bandwidth, which is related to the local forest structure. It is validated on 44 plots of a Portuguese forest, composed mainly of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) and maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) trees. The number of detected trees varies with the dominance position: from 98.6% for the dominant trees to 12.8% for the suppressed trees. Linear regression models explain up to 70% of the variability associated with ground vegetation and understory height. [Termes IGN] segmentationRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) data plays an important role in 3D modelling of urban scenes. Much research is carried out in the fields of pre-processing, segmentation and geometric reconstruction of laser data of building façades. However, the quality of 3D models obtained from this data is rarely assessed. This paper proposes a qualitative and quantitative assessment approach to evaluate the quality of 3D models of façades constructed with TLS data. Only segmentation and reconstruction operations are considered in this paper, because they cover the main steps in the 3D modelling process. Since every processing step produces an intermediate result, each one must be analysed and compared with an appropriate reference model. A new approach has been conceived to evaluate the precision of the segmentation results. It is based on the calculation of Boolean operators enabling the comparison of planar clusters produced by the segmentation. To evaluate the vector models resulting from the reconstruction step, a method based on quality indices is proposed. It is adapted not only for precision but also for accuracy calculations. The results show that the quality assessment approach is coherent and, moreover, easy to apply. [Termes IGN] signalisation routièreRésumé : (Auteur) Among implicit information of laser points, the strength of reflection of laser points is closely related to the property of road materials which helps detecting road markings. This paper presents a novel approach to automatically extracting road markings from mobile lidar point clouds. An interpolation method is first used to generate a georeferenced feature image of the point cloud, which helps to isolate the points of road surfaces. Then, an algorithm is used to separate these points within a range according to their strength of reflection. The separated points are further segmented to remove non-road points based on height threshold. Finally, the outlines of road markings are extracted from the segmented points using the semantic knowledge of road markings. The results demonstrated that our method was very promising for automatic extraction of road markings from lidar point clouds collected by a land-based mobile lidar system, an Optech Lynx Mobile Mapper. [Termes IGN] segmentationRésumé : (Auteur) Although defining geographic regions for analysis can be a complex exercise, involving both physical and human geographic perspectives, employing both qualitative and quantitative data, and integrating a wide range of social, economic, and political factors, it is frequently a necessary exercise in the pursuit of regional development. This article presents a method for modeling and delineating regions with fuzzy analysis for the purpose of regional development. A review of the literature regarding fuzzy analysis is provided, which demonstrates that this method is both novel and necessary. An application of this method is described in the context of the Sardinian Geopark. The fuzzy clustering analysis demonstrates how combinations of factors can inform decisions regarding where and how to initiate or continue regional development efforts. Suggestions for improvements and extensions to this process are provided. [Termes IGN] segmentation en régionsRésumé : (auteur) Contrary to aerial images, satellite images are often affected by the presence of clouds. Identifying and removing these clouds is one of the primary steps to perform when processing satellite images, as they may alter subsequent procedures such as atmospheric corrections, DSM production or land cover classification. The main goal of this paper is to present the cloud detection approach, developed at the French Mapping agency. Our approach is based on the availability of multi-temporal satellite images (i.e. time series that generally contain between 5 and 10 images) and is based on a region-growing procedure. Seeds (corresponding to clouds) are firstly extracted through a pixel-to-pixel comparison between the images contained in time series (the presence of a cloud is here assumed to be related to a high variation of reflectance between two images). Clouds are then delineated finely using a dedicated region-growing algorithm. The method, originally designed for panchromatic SPOT5-HRS images, is tested in this paper using time series with 9 multi-temporal satellite images. Our preliminary experiments show the good performances of our method. In a near future, the method will be applied to Pléiades images, acquired during the in-flight commissioning phase of the satellite (launched at the end of 2011). In that context, this is a particular goal of this paper to show to which extent and in which way our method can be adapted to this kind of imagery.
