Note de contenu : 1. Présentation

[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Tropical cyclones (hurricanes and typhoons) produce high winds that can generate waves capable of damaging coral reefs. As cyclones frequently pass through northeast Australia's Great Barrier Reef (GBR), it is important to understand how the spatial distribution of reef damage changes over time. However, direct measurements of wave damage, or even wave heights or wind speeds, are rare within the GBR. An important factor in estimating whether cyclone damage was possible is the magnitude and duration of high-energy wind and waves. Thus, before the spatio-temporal dynamics of past cyclone damage can be modelled, it is necessary to reconstruct the spread, intensity, and duration of high-energy conditions during individual cyclones. This was done every hour along the track taken by each of 85 cyclones that passed near the GBR from 1969 to 2003, by implementing a cyclone wind hindcasting model directly within a raster GIS using cyclone data available from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Three measures of cyclone energy (maximum wind speed—MAX, duration of gales—GALES, and continuous duration of gales—CGALES) were derived from these data. For three cyclones, where field data documenting actual reef damage from cyclone-generated waves were available, the predictive ability of each measure was assessed statistically. All three performed better in predicting reef damage at sites surveyed along the high-energy reef front than those surveyed along the more protected reef back. MAX performed best for cyclone Joy (r2 = 0.5), while CGALES performed best for cyclones Ivor (r2 = 0.23) and Justin (r2 = 0.48). Using thresholds for MAX and GALES obtained via comparison with field data of damage, it was possible to produce a preliminary prediction of the risk of wave damage across the GBR from each of the 85 cyclones. The results suggest that while up to two-thirds of the GBR was at risk from some damage for 30–50% of the time series (~18 out of 35 years), only scattered areas of the region were at risk more frequently than that. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) This paper analyzes the potential of airborne laser scanner data for measuring individual tree height growth in a boreal forest using 82 sample trees of Scots pine. Point clouds (10 points/m2, beam size 40 cm) illuminating 50 percent of the treetops were acquired in September 1998 and May 2003 with the Toposys 83 kHz lidar system. The reference height and height growth of pines were measured with a tacheometer in the field. Three different types of features were extracted from the point clouds representing each tree; they were the difference between the highest z values, the difference between the DSMs of the tree crown, and the differences between the 85th, 90th and 95th percentiles of the canopy height histograms corresponding to the crown. The best correspondence with the field measurements was achieved with an R2 value of 0.68 and a RMSE of 43 cm. The results indicate that it is possible to measure the growth of an individual tree with multi-temporal laser surveys. We also demonstrated a new algorithm for tree-to-tree matching. It is needed in operational growth estimation based on individual trees, especially in dense spruce forests. The method is based on minimizing the distances between treetops in the N- dimensional data space. The experiments showed that the use of the location (derived from laser data) and height of the trees were together adequate to provide reliable tree-to-tree matching. In the future, a fourth dimension (the crown area) should also be included in the matching. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) A precise simulation of soil water content (SWC) and actual evapotranspiration (ETa) in a region or a catchment depends on the accuracy of the spatial data inputs. In this study, we developed a simple grid-based soil water balance model. In this model, remotely sensed vegetation data are used to estimate spatial distributions of daily SWC and ETa rates. The model was validated by comparing simulated SWC with the measured by gravimetric method and time domain reflectometry (TDR) at an experimental test site located in Northeastern Germany in the time period 1993–1998. The index of agreement IA and the root-mean-square error obtained from the comparison of the TDR measurements to the simulated values ranged from 0.45 to 0.80 and from 0.029 to 0.061 cm3/cm3, respectively. The comparison of simulated ETa rates to those measured by four large-scale lysimeters at another test site showed IA values above 0.87 and R2 values higher than 0.59. For the regional application of the model, a method was developed to integrate the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) vegetation data into the model. The MODIS data used in our study consist of 16-day normalized difference vegetation index and 8-day leaf area index products. Regarding the spatial application of the model, our approach was tested in a catchment located in Northeastern Germany in 2001–2003. A sufficient correlation between daily discharge rates measured at two observation gauges in the catchment and the corresponding simulated discharge rates and also good correlations between the simulated ETa rates and the MODIS-leaf area index values indicate that the model is an appropriate simulation tool at regional scale if the corresponding additional spatial databases regarding surface and soil properties are available.
