[Termes IGN] vagueRésumé : (Auteur) A quantitative comparison of the collocated inter-annual significant wave height (SWH) data collected between 2006 and 2009 from buoys and altimeters at nine buoy locations (total n = 2241) in the Northern Indian Ocean is attempted for assessing the validity of daily averaged gridded altimeter significant wave height (ASWH) provided by AVISO for operational use. ASWH is underestimated by 0.20 m, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) is less than 0.30 m, the Scatter Index is less than 20%, and the correlation coefficient is greater than 0.90. Further, at three locations, the examination of the above statistics showed that the bias and RMSE is high during the southwest monsoon season compared with the Northeast monsoon. Scatter Index showed only slight variation (14–18%) for different ranges of SWH. The response of the daily average gridded ASWH data during extreme conditions (cyclones) in the vicinity of the buoy locations is poor at all compared buoy locations. The gridded ASWH from different satellite missions provided by AVISO can be used for basin scale validation experiments of the wave model and for climatological studies in the Indian Ocean, except during cyclone conditions. [Termes IGN] SvalbardRésumé : (Auteur) Arctic glaciers are reliable indicators of global climate changes. However, monitoring snow and ice dynamics in Arctic regions is challenging: some fast but key events can be missed since they are short in time but significant in the hydrological budget. In the context of long term monitoring with high temporal and spatial resolutions of the snow cover dynamics, automated digital cameras were installed around the Austre Lovénbreen glacier basin (Spitsbergen, Norway, 79°N). Despite data losses due to rough weather conditions and control electronics failure, a dataset of 2411 pictures (out of an expected 3294) was gathered over a 1 year hydrological period to assess the snow coverage of the glacier as a function of time with daily resolution. 73% of the total number of expected images was thus recorded, with gaps associated with temporary electronics or data storage failure. The six camera stations oriented so as to observe the glacier itself provide a surface coverage of 96%. Furthermore, geometric corrections of the pictures, using reference ground control points located on the glacier through GPS receivers, yield a quantitative information from initially qualitative images. Projecting the resulting mosaic of the images gathered from six cameras on a GIS allows for the precise monitoring of ice-related processes, and especially the snow coverage evolution over time. This paper summarizes our current understanding of such dynamics, based on the analysis of daily mosaics of images allowing for the observation of both long term evolution on the seasonal scale and the short term events on a weekly scale. Such results demonstrated over one typical full hydrological season (April–October 2009) that snow coverage evolves following discrete steps, either due to water precipitation or warm events, with a snow coverage ranging from 100% (april) to 37% (September). The estimated parameters using correlated time series data, as station velocities, are then more uncertain than if the time series data were uncorrelated. If the level of the time-correlated noise is not taken into account, the estimated formal uncertainties will be smaller. By estimating the type and amplitude of the noise content in time series, more realistic formal uncertainties can be assessed. However, time-correlated noise amplitude is not constant in long time series, but depends on the time period of the time series data. Older time series data contain larger time-correlated noise amplitudes than newer time series data. This way, shorter time series with older data time period exhibit time-correlated noise amplitudes similar to the whole time series. This paper focuses on the source of the time-correlated noise amplitude decrease from older to newer time series period data. The results of several tested sources are presented. Neither the increasing ambiguity fixation rate, nor the increasing number of tracking stations, nor the increasing number of observed satellites are likely the source of the noise reduction. The quality improvement of the equipment of both tracking network and constellation is likely the main source of the correlated noise evolution. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a novel change-detection-driven transfer learning (TL) approach to update land-cover maps by classifying remote-sensing images acquired on the same area at different times (i.e., image time series). The proposed approach requires that a reliable training set is available only for one of the images (i.e., the source domain) in the time series whereas it is not for another image to be classified (i.e., the target domain). Unlike other literature TL methods, no additional assumptions on either the similarity between class distributions or the presence of the same set of land-cover classes in the two domains are required. The proposed method aims at defining a reliable training set for the target domain, taking advantage of the already available knowledge on the source domain. This is done by applying an unsupervised-change-detection method to target and source domains and transferring class labels of detected unchanged training samples from the source to the target domain to initialize the target-domain training set. The training set is then optimized by a properly defined novel active learning (AL) procedure. At the early iterations of AL, priority in labeling is given to samples detected as being changed, whereas in the remaining ones, the most informative samples are selected from changed and unchanged unlabeled samples. Finally, the target image is classified. Experimental results show that transferring the class labels from the source domain to the target domain provides a reliable initial training set and that the priority rule for AL results in a fast convergence to the desired accuracy with respect to Standard AL. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this study was to use an analytical approach to monitor water quality in an Iowa lake using multitemporal Hyperion satellite imagery. Cloud-free hyperspectral images were acquired from the Hyperion sensor on individual days in June, July, and August of 2006. Water samples with accurate locations using GPS were collected simultaneously with image acquisition. Water samples were analyzed for various water quality constituents. Chlorophyll-a (chl), was estimated for each sampling date using a bio-optical model with Specific Inherent Optical Properties (siops) of the lake and light field variables derived from a radiative transfer numerical model. The model was then applied to the Hyperion images to create spatially continuous CHL maps for the study area every month. These results were compared with traditional linear regression model outputs. Maps produced using the bio-optical model effectively demonstrated spatial and temporal variability of CHL for the lake. The CHL concentration from this model across the lake ranged from 28 to 121ug/L for the month of June, 18 to 111ug/L for July, and 31 to 125 ug/L for August. The validation and accuracy assessment for the bio-optical model with in-situ data showed R2 values of 0.90978, 0.96794 and 0.93057 for June, July, and August, respectively, and Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient values of 0.499478, 0.733072, and 0.878757 for June, July, and August, respectively.
