[Termes IGN] mouvement du pôleRésumé : (Auteur) Because the tide-raising potential is symmetric about the Earth’s polar axis it can excite polar motion only by acting upon non-axisymmetric features of the Earth like the oceans. In fact, after removing atmospheric and non-tidal oceanic effects, polar motion excitation observations show a strong fortnightly tidal signal that is not completely explained by existing dynamical and empirical ocean tide models. So a new empirical model for the effect of the termensual (Mtm and mtm), fortnightly (Mf and mf), and monthly (Mm) tides on polar motion is derived here by fitting periodic terms at these tidal frequencies to polar motion excitation observations that span 2 January 1980 to 8 September 2006 and from which atmospheric and non-tidal oceanic effects have been removed. While this new empirical tide model can fully explain the observed fortnightly polar motion excitation signal during this time interval it would still be desirable to have a model for the effect of long-period ocean tides on polar motion that is determined from a dynamical ocean tide model and that is therefore independent of polar motion observations. [Termes IGN] recensement démographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The US Census provides the primary source of spatially explicit social data, but changing block boundaries complicate analyses of housing growth over time. We compared procedures for reconciling housing density data between 1990 and 2000 census block boundaries in order to assess the sensitivity of analytical methods to estimates of housing growth in Oregon. Estimates of housing growth varied substantially and were sensitive to the method of interpolation. With no processing and areal-weighted interpolation, more than 35% of the landscape changed; 75-80% of this change was due to decline in housing density. This decline was implausible, however, because housing structures generally persist over time. Based on aggregated boundaries, 11% of the landscape changed, but only 4% experienced a decline in housing density. Nevertheless, the housing density change map was almost twice as coarse spatially as the 2000 housing density data. We also applied a dasymetric approach to redistribute 1990 housing data into 2000 census boundaries under the assumption that the distribution of housing in 2000 reflected the same distribution as in 1990. The dasymetric approach resulted in conservative change estimates at a fine resolution. All methods involved some type of trade-off (e.g. analytical difficulty, data resolution, magnitude or bias in direction of change). However, our dasymetric procedure is a novel approach for assessing housing growth over changing census boundaries that may be particularly useful because it accounts for the uniquely persistent nature of housing over time. [Termes IGN] objet géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) We compared the efficiency and robustness of two radiometric correction techniques applied to six SPOT-5 scenes used for assessing environmental changes of Camargue wetlands: the 6S atmospheric model and 86 pseudo-invariant features (PIFs) found in deep water, pine trees, roofs and sand. The few PIFs were selected subjectively following the low number of potentially invariant sectors available on the scenes. Both approaches provided a similar radiometric variation (6S = 4.3 percent; PIFs = 4.0 percent). The latter increased from water to pine trees, to roofs and sand, with five reference points per feature being identified as cost effective. The withdrawing of variant features among the PIFs across dates or points caused a significant decrease in radiometric variation, especially with 6S (6S = 2.8 percent, PIFs = 3.4 percent). As many as 31 point per type of PIFs would be necessary to provide a radiometric variation that is not significantly different from that obtained with 6S, whereas nearly 300 and 4,000 points per feature would be required to provide similar or better results than the 6S code, respectively. Use of a few PIFs remains a valid approach, as long as the invariant sectors cover a wide range of brightness and are represented by objects of which the radiometric variation has preliminarily been tested. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, the adverse effects of the Marmara earthquake of 17 August 1999 on the land use/land cover (LULC) of Kocaeli province in Turkey were analysed by integration of ERS-2, LANDSAT TM, SPOT-4 and IRS-1C data of varying spectral and spatial resolutions with ground data such as geological maps, soil maps and elevation data. The study was carried out in three main stages. The first stage consisted of studies on the deformation of the Earth's crust, damage in the urban texture and changes to the coastline through analysis of satellite data before and after the earthquake. Earth crust deformations resulting after the earthquake were mapped by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data using a SAR interferometer. Damage in urban centres and coastline changes were assessed by analysis of SPOT and LANDSAT imageries. IRS data after the earthquake were used for the current LULC map of the entire province. The second stage involved settlement suitability analysis by multicriteria evaluation (MCE) methodology taking into account the geological formations, land cover, soil classes, slope, main transportation network, and urbanization status of Kocaeli province. In the third stage, the results obtained through the settlement suitability analysis were interpreted by the information generated through satellite imageries.
