[Termes IGN] régularisation de TychonoffRésumé : (auteur) The Earth observation using remote sensing is one of the most important technologies to assimilate key attributes about the Earth’s surface. To achieve tangible consequence, the internal building blocks of such a complex system must operate flawlessly. However, due to a dynamically changing environment, degradation in sensor electronics, and extreme weather condition remotely sensed images often miss essential information. As the sensors operate over several years in space the likelihood of sensor degradation persists. This results in commonly observed issues, such as stripe noise, missing partial data, and missing band. Various ground-based solutions have been developed to address these technological bottlenecks individually. In this article, we devise a method, which we call ALERT, to tackle missing band reconstruction. The proposed method reconstructs the missing band with the sole supervision of spectral and spatial priors. We compare the proposed framework with state-of-the-art methods and show compelling improvement both qualitatively and quantitatively. We provide both theoretical and empirical evidence of better performance by regularized adversarial learning as compared to complete supervision. Furthermore, we propose a new residual-dense-block (RDB) module to preserve geometric fidelity and assist in efficient gradient flow. We show that ALERT captures essential features such that the spatial and spectral characteristics of the reconstructed band remains preserved. To critically analyze the generalization we test the performance on two different satellite data sets: Resourcesat-2A and WorldView-2. As per our extensive experimentation, the proposed method achieves 20.72%, 13.81%, 1.05%, 15.91%, and 2.94% improvement in the root mean square error (RMSE), SAM, SSIM, PSNR, and SRE, respectively, over the state-of-the-art model. [Termes IGN] United States Geological SurveyRésumé : (Auteur) Machine learning allows “the machine” to deduce the complex and sometimes unrecognized rules governing spatial systems, particularly topographic mapping, by exposing it to the end product. Often, the obstacle to this approach is the acquisition of many good and labeled training examples of the desired result. Such is the case with most types of natural features. To address such limitations, this research introduces GeoNat v1.0, a natural feature dataset, used to support artificial intelligence‐based mapping and automated detection of natural features under a supervised learning paradigm. The dataset was created by randomly selecting points from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Geographic Names Information System and includes approximately 200 examples each of 10 classes of natural features. Resulting data were tested in an object‐detection problem using a region‐based convolutional neural network. The object‐detection tests resulted in a 62% mean average precision as baseline results. Major challenges in developing training data in the geospatial domain, such as scale and geographical representativeness, are addressed in this article. We hope that the resulting dataset will be useful for a variety of applications and shed light on training data collection and labeling in the geospatial artificial intelligence domain. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (auteur) Accurately classifying 3-D point clouds into woody and leafy components has been an interest for applications in forestry and ecology including the better understanding of radiation transfer between canopy and atmosphere. The past decade has seen an increase in the methods attempting to classify leaves and wood in point clouds based on radiometric or geometric features. However, classification purely based on radiometric features is sensor-specific, and the method by which the local neighborhood of a point is defined affects the accuracy of classification based on geometric features. Here, we present a leaf-wood classification method combining geometrical features defined by radially bounded nearest neighbors at multiple spatial scales in a machine learning model. We compared the performance of three different machine learning models generated by the random forest (RF), XGBoost, and lightGBM algorithms. Using multiple spatial scales eliminates the need for an optimal neighborhood size selection and defining the local neighborhood by radially bounded nearest neighbors makes the method broadly applicable for point clouds of varying quality. We assessed the model performance at the individual tree- and plot-level on field data from tropical and deciduous forests, as well as on simulated point clouds. The method has an overall average accuracy of 94.2% on our data sets. For other data sets, the presented method outperformed the methods in literature in most cases without the need for additional postprocessing steps that are needed in most of the existing methods. We provide the entire framework as an open-source python package. [Termes IGN] scène urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Urban functional zones are basic units of urban planning and resource allocation, and contribute to a wide range of urban studies and investigations. Existing studies on functional-zone mapping with very-high-resolution (VHR) satellite images focused much on feature representations and classification techniques, but ignored zone sampling which however was fundamental to automatic zone classifications. Functional-zone sampling is much complicated and can hardly be resolved by classical sampling methods, as functional zones are complex urban scenes which consist of heterogeneous land covers and have highly abstract categories. To resolve the issue, this study presents a novel sampling paradigm, i.e., heuristic sample learning (HSL). It first proposes a sparse topic model to select representative functional zones, then uses deep forest to select confusing zones, and finally embraces Chinese restaurant process to label these selected zones. The presented method collects both representative and confusing zone samples and identifies their categories accurately, which makes the functional-zone classification process robust and the classification results accurate. Experiments conducted in Beijing indicate that HSL is effective and efficient for functional-zone sampling and classifications. Compared to traditional manual sampling, HSL reduces the time cost by 55% and improves the classification accuracy by 11.3% on average; furthermore, HSL can reduce the variation in sampling and classification results caused by different proficiency of operators. Accordingly, HSL significantly contributes to functional-zone mapping and plays an important role in urban studies. [Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (Editeur) This open access book constitutes the proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Intelligent Data Analysis, IDA 2020, held in Konstanz, Germany, in April 2020. The 45 full papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 114 submissions. Advancing Intelligent Data Analysis requires novel, potentially game-changing ideas. IDA’s mission is to promote ideas over performance: a solid motivation can be as convincing as exhaustive empirical evaluation.
