[Termes IGN] théorie des jeuxRésumé : (Auteur) This book originated from a series of lectures delivered by the first author at the Warsaw School of Social Psychology and at Warsaw University over the last six years. The purpose of these lectures was to give a very broad overview of various aspects of modeling for a mixed audience, from students of mathematics, computer science, and physics to students of biology and social sciences. Considering the different levels of mathematical literacy among those who attended the lectures, we have relied only on the mathematical concepts known to high school graduates. Therefore, our book can be understood by a wide spectrum of readers - from ambitious high school students to graduate students of all specialities. We were trying to keep the mathematics at the high school level; however, some chapters may require an additional effort since they describe modern advances in computer modeling. Note de contenu : I. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) This document describes the Po-tree, a new indexing structure for spatiotemporal databases with soft real time constraints. This is crucial for risk management, particularly for the monitoring of volcanic risk. For example, the Popocatepetl, a Mexican volcano, is closely monitored through an network of spatially referenced sensors. They all send back their measurements to a central spatiotemporal database. The Po-tree will therefore be able to index huge quantities of data in a restricted amount of time. It will also be able to favor the newer data, which are queried more frequently. While most structures tend to favor the temporal aspect over the spatial, or tend to consider time as another spatial dimension, the Po-tree offers an alternative. It does so by combining two different structures, for spatial and temporal dimensions respectively, stressing the spatial aspect, and linking every source of information to a new temporal sub-tree. While mobility is not yet supported, experimentation and comparisons have shown interesting potential in the structure. [Termes IGN] base de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Motivated by the way R-trees are implemented in commercial databases systems, in this paper we examine several deletion techniques for R-trees. In particular, in commercial systems R-tree entries are mapped onto relational tables, which implement their own concurrency protocols on top of existing table-level concurrency mechanisms, In analogy, the actual industrial implementations of B-trees do not apply the well-known merging procedure from textbooks in case of node underflows, but rather they apply the free-at-empty technique. This way, space is sacrificed for the benefit of faster deletions and less locking operations, whereas the search performance practically remains unaffected. In this context, we examine the efficiency of modifications to the original R-tree deletion algorithm, which relax certain constraints of this algorithm and perform a controlled reorganization procedure according to a specified criterion. We present the modified algorithms and experimental results about the impact of these modifications on the tree quality, the execution time for the deletion operation and the processing time of search queries, considering several parameters. The experimental results indicate that the modified algorithms improve the efficiency of the deletion operation, while they do not affect the quality of the R-tree and its performance with respect to search operations.
