[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) In contrast to conventional airborne multi-echo laser scanner systems, full-waveform (FW) lidar systems are able to record the entire emitted and backscattered signal of each laser pulse. Instead of clouds of individual 3D points, FW devices provide connected 1D profiles of the 3D scene, which contain more detailed and additional information about the structure of the illuminated surfaces. This paper is focused on the analysis of FW data in urban areas. The problem of modelling FW lidar signals is first tackled. The standard method assumes the waveform to be the superposition of signal contributions of each scattering object in such a laser beam, which are approximated by Gaussian distributions. This model is suitable in many cases, especially in vegetated terrain. However, since it is not tailored to urban waveforms, the generalized Gaussian model is selected instead here. Then, a pattern recognition method for urban area classification is proposed. A supervised method using Support Vector Machines is performed on the FW point cloud based on the parameters extracted from the post-processing step. Results show that it is possible to partition urban areas in building, vegetation, natural ground and artificial ground regions with high accuracy using only lidar waveforms. [Termes IGN] stress hydriqueRésumé : (auteur) The combined effect of water stress and light on seedlings of forest species is a key factor to determine the best silvicultural and afforestation practices in the Mediterranean area. The aims of this work was (1) to determine the optimal light level for the early development of cork oak seedlings under mild water stress and (2) to test if the combined effect of water stress and light followed the trade-off, the facilitation or the orthogonal hypothesis. Shade reduced instantaneous photosynthetic rates and water use efficiency in cork oak. However, seedlings grown under moderate shade (15% of full sunlight) were capable to accumulate similar amount of biomass than those grown under more illuminated environments by increasing their specific leaf area. Absolute differences in net photosynthesis between light treatments were higher in well watered than in water stressed seedlings. However, the impact of both factors on overall growth was orthogonal. We concluded that cork oak development is impaired under deep shade (5% of full sunlight) but it can be optimal under moderate shade (15% of full sunlight) even under moderate water stress. Implications of these patterns on regeneration, cultivation and afforestation of cork oak are discussed. [Termes IGN] trajet multipleRésumé : (Editeur) In 2004 the United States and the European Union signed a ground-breaking agreement to provide common, interoperable signals for civil users of GPS and Galileo: a binary offset carrier (BOC) modulation with a 1.023 MHz sub-carrier frequency and a code rate of 1.023 mega-chips per second — BOC (1,1) — centered at 1575.42 MHz. Subsequent discussions by a US/EU technical working group produced what was considered — not without dissent — to be an even better signal structure: a multiplex BOC. With the GIOVE-B satellite now in orbit and broadcasting the new signals, a team of researchers have evaluated the actual improvement in multipath mitigation by MBOC relative to BOC(1,1). [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Wetlands are areas where the presence of water at or near the soil surface drives the natural system. Imaging radars (SARs) have distinct characteristics which make them of significant value for monitoring and mapping wetland inundation dynamics. The presence or absence of water (which has a much higher dielectric constant than dry or wet soil) in wetlands may significantly alter the signal detected from these areas depending on the dominant vegetation type, density, and height. The objective of this paper is to present our current research efforts to explain and correctly simulate the radar response of wetland vegetation/inundation mixtures, and use simulations as an aid for retrieval applications. The radar response of junco marshes under different flood conditions and vegetation stages is analysed using a set of 13 multipolarization ENVISAT ASAR scenes acquired over the Paraná River Delta marshes during the period 2003-2005. The main aspect of the approach followed is the simulation of SAR wave interactions with vegetation and water, using an adapted and improved version of the EM model developed at Tor Vergata University. The results obtained indicate that with the refined EM model, it is possible to represent with a good accuracy VV and HH SAR responses of junco marshes for a variety of environmental conditions. Further work and data are needed to explain measured HV backscattering. The general agreement obtained between simulations and observations permitted the development of a simple retrieval scheme, and estimates of water level below the canopy were obtained for different environmental conditions. RMS errors of forward simulations and retrievals are reported and discussed. [Termes IGN] traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) The upcoming modernization of the GPS signals will allow for measurements on an additional third frequency L5 located at 1176.45 MHz. To take advantage of carrier-phase measurements on this new signal, the strategies for integer ambiguity resolution, required for centimeter-level accuracy, may need to be revised. The Least-squares Ambiguity Decorrelation Adjustment method remains perhaps the most powerful tool for finding the best combinations based on a complete decorrelation of the variance–covariance matrix related to the ambiguities. However, the computational load of that method plus the opportunity to comprehensively study the interaction of multiple frequencies suggest a reconsideration of approaches using predefined combinations between frequencies is not out of place. In this paper a systematic investigation is made of all possible triple-frequency geometry-free carrier-phase combinations which retain the integer nature of the ambiguities. The concept of the lane-number is presented to unambiguously describe the wavelength of a particular combination. The propagation of the observation noise and of the ionospheric bias on these combinations is presented. These noise and ionospheric amplification factors are analysed with respect to the resulting wavelength, in an effort to highlight optimal combinations characterized by a long wavelength, low noise and limited ionospheric impact.
