[Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate target detection and classification in hyperspectral imagery require that the spectral measurements by the imager match as closely as possible the known “true” target as collected under controlled conditions and stored in a target database. Therefore, the effect of the radiation source and the atmosphere must be factored out of the result before detection is attempted. Our objective is to evaluate detection error due to the error in estimating the atmospherics. We apply a range of atmospheric water vapor profiles, corresponding to different relative humidities, to a model-based prediction of the radiative transfer to examine the effect of water vapor on simulated hyperspectral imagery. These profiles are taken from known distribution percentiles as obtained from historic meteorological measurements close to the sites being simulated. We quantify the expected detection error for the adaptive matched filter, as measured by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and the area under the ROC curve, given the range of atmospheric conditions in the historic profile. We discover that, depending on the target, and given the uncertainty as to the true atmospheric conditions, detection rates improve on average across the historic range when we assume the atmospheric profile is at the 35th percentile of atmospheric relative humidity instead of the 50th percentile. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) The effects of signal contamination of secondary data are investigated in the framework of adaptive target detection in remotely sensed hyperspectral images. In contrast to previous studies on signal contamination, the focus of this paper is the detection of targets with unknown spectral signatures (i.e., anomalies) and adaptive detection methods based on a local estimation of the background covariance matrix. Contamination due to the target signal is expected to have a more severe impact when the number of secondary data is limited. An analytical model for signal contamination is developed that allows variability in the extent of contamination. Several parameters, such as the contamination fraction of secondary data and the contaminating signal energy, are introduced, and a contaminating signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is derived as an objective measure of contamination. The proposed model is employed to experimentally evaluate signal contamination effects and the impact of its variability on the performance of adaptive detection of local anomalies. The outcomes of the experimental study are substantiated by validation with real hyperspectral data. The results obtained highlight the relevance that the impact of signal contamination, assessed with respect to different system parameters, may have for practical applications. This paper represents a starting point for the development of detection performance forecasting models that consider signal contamination. [Termes IGN] réflectance de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an improved Dark Dense Vegetation (DDV) method for retrieving 500 m-resolution aerosol optical depth (AOT) based on MOD04-C005 arithmetic with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The improvements include change of the movement pattern of retrieval window, selection of a more suitable aerosol type, and storage of the look-up table. The method is then applied to obtain the AOT over the Pearl River Delta region (PRD). By comparing the results with the co-temporal ground sunphotometer observations in 2010, the correlation coefficient is found to be 0.794 with RMSE 0.139 and their variations remain consistent. Contrasts between model values in 2008 and MODIS AOT products in the same date also reveal a high accuracy of the improved DDV method. We also performed sensitivity tests to analyze the impacts of several parameters on apparent reflectance at different bands, and the results show that apparent reflectance is much more sensitive to surface reflectance and AOT than to elevation. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) In ground-based GPS meteorology, weighted mean temperature is the key parameter to calculate the conversion factor which will be used to map zenith wet delay to precipitable water vapor. In practical applications, we can hardly obtain the vertical profiles of meteorological parameters over the site, thus cannot use the integration method to calculate weighted mean temperature. In order to exactly calculate weighted mean temperature from a few meteorological parameters, this paper studied the relation between weighted mean temperature and surface temperature, surface water vapor pressure and surface pressure, and determined the relationship between, on the one hand, the weighted mean temperature, and, on the other hand, the surface temperature and surface water vapor pressure. Considering the seasonal and geographic variations in the relationship, we employed the trigonometry functions with an annual cycle and a semi-annual cycle to fit the residuals (seasonal and geographic variations are reflected in the residuals). Through the above work, we finally established the GTm-I model and the PTm-I model with a 2 2.5 (latlon) resolution. Test results show that the two models both show a consistent high accuracy around the globe, which is about 1.0 K superior to the widely used Bevis weighted mean temperature–surface temperature relationship in terms of root mean square error. [Termes IGN] image de synthèseRésumé : (Auteur) In the last years, many topographic correction (TOC) methods have been proposed to correct the illumination differences between the areas observed by optical remote sensors. Although the available number of TOC methods is high, the evaluation of their performance generally relies on the existence of precise land-cover information, and a standardized and objective evaluation procedure has not been proposed yet. In this paper, we propose an objective procedure to assess the accuracy of these TOC methods on the basis of simulated scenes, i.e., synthetically generated images. These images represent the radiance an optical sensor would receive under specific geometric and temporal acquisition conditions and assuming a certain land-cover type. A simplified method for creating synthetic images using the state-of-the-art irradiance models is proposed, both considering the real topography of a certain area [synthetic real (SR) image] or considering the relief of this area as being completely flat [synthetic horizontal image (SH)]. The comparison between the corrected image obtained by applying a TOC method to the SR and SH images of the same area, allows assessing the performance of each TOC algorithm. This comparison is quantitatively carried out using the structural similarity index. The proposed TOC evaluation procedure is applied to a specific case study in northern Spain to explain its implementation and demonstrate its potential. The procedure proposed in this paper could be also used to assess the behavior of TOC methods operating under different scenarios considering diverse topographic, geometrical, and temporal acquisition configurations.
