[Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (auteur) This study presents a Single Channel Method using Urban Exitance Model (UEM-SCM) to retrieve land surface temperature (LST) from satellite data in an urbanized city, and evaluates the geometry effect on land surface temperature retrieval using single channel method and split-window algorithm. The UEM-SCM incorporates the effect of urban geometry and considers both reflection caused by the target pixel and its neighboring pixels. In order to evaluate the geometry effect, the retrieved LSTs with and without geometry effect were studied. Results show that the LSTs without geometry effect are generally higher than the LSTs with geometry effect. The temperature difference occurs because the material emissivity is always lower than the effective emissivity caused by multiple scattering and reflection in urban areas (cavity effect). The LST without geometry effect also cannot fully capture the variability and complexity of urban thermal patterns. The temperature difference between with and without the geometry effect can reach 2 K in built-up areas. A comparison was also conducted between LST retrieved by split-window algorithm with and without geometry effect. Results show that the LST retrieved by split-window algorithm without geometry effect has generally higher values than the one with the geometry effect, e.g. 1.1 K on average and 1.5–2 K in built-up areas. The geometry effect will be removed and mis-deemed as atmospheric effect when the split-window algorithm without geometry effect is applied in urban areas. The split-window algorithm with the geometry effect can be used to distinguish between geometry and atmospheric effect in further study. [Termes IGN] spectromètre imageurRésumé : (auteur) We describe an approach to improve Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA) results for applications involving discrimination among spectrally-similar species, and commonly occur in multispectral and hyperspectral vegetation remote sensing studies. Such applications are inherently difficult, due to the high degree of similarity between distinct species, coupled with potentially high intra-species variability caused by factors such as growing conditions, canopy structure, ambient illumination, or substrate characteristics. We describe a method to map spectra to a feature space where distinctions between plant species are emphasized using a transformation based on Multiclass Discriminant Analysis. We compute this transformation using groups of pixels that represent individual plant canopies similar to the endmembers in MESMA’s spectral library, and describe a technique to automatically select such spectra from a given image. Compared to conventional MESMA, and also to several alternative MESMA formulations, we observe up to twofold increases in accuracy, along with a factor of ten reduction in computation time using our MESMA approach in several species discrimination applications. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for agricultural species discrimination applications using spectra captured by two different imaging spectrometers. [Termes IGN] réflectance spectraleRésumé : (auteur) After atmospheric correction, an algorithm for the removal of thin cirrus cloud as well as alto-thin clouds or thin clouds collectively within visible and near infrared bands (Bands 1 through 5) of Landsat-8 was developed. The algorithm removed cirrus clouds using Band 9 first, and the remaining thin clouds using quality assurance (QA) band. Using a Landsat-8 sub-image of 129/39 (path/row) acquired on 16 December 2013, we evaluated the algorithm. Thin clouds disappeared visually. Reflectance values of Bands 1 through 4 decreased in both steps. Reflectance values of Band 5 decreased in step one, and then stayed the same. With a nearly cloud-free image acquired on 30 November 2013 as the “truth,” the spatial correlation coefficients of cloud-covered pixels within the December image were 0.84 or higher. Changes in reflectance values of Bands 1 to 5, and the high correlation coefficient values indicated the validity of the algorithm. [Termes IGN] routeRésumé : (auteur) This paper proposes a pipeline to produce road orthophoto and DTM from Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS). For the ortho, modern laser scanners provide a reflectance information allowing for high quality grayscale images, at a much finer resolution than aerial photography can offer. For DTM, MLS offers a much higher accuracy and density than aerial products. This increased precision and resolution leverages new applications for both ortho and DEM. The first task is to filter ground vs non ground, then an interpolation is conducted to build image tiles from the filtered points. Finally, multiple layers are registered and blended to allow for seamless fusion. Our proposed approach achieves high quality products and scaling up is demonstrated. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) The directional variation of land surface reflectance generates an apparent noise in the time series acquired from satellites with variable observation geometries, which can be corrected through appropriate modeling of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). In a previous paper, we described and validated the VJB method that estimates a target BRDF shape and corrects for directional effects and yet retains the high temporal resolution of the measurement. Here, we analyze its potential to measure the BRDF of targets at the 0.5-km resolution of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The description of the BRDF in the NASA MCD43A1 product shows very large temporal variations that are unrealistic. However, the reflectance time series, normalized to a standard observation geometry using this modeling, have a similar quality as those derived using VJB. Conversely, the MCD43A1 modeled reflectances for a nonstandard geometry are unrealistically variable. These results indicate that the standard BRDF model inversion used to derive the MCD43A1 product is underconstrained due to the limited directional sampling of the 16-day composite period. The apparent noise in the corrected reflectance time series is significantly larger than the one obtained at lower spatial resolution, and is very much a function of the spatial heterogeneity of the area surrounding the target. These results strongly indicate that the multitemporal MODIS measurement at high spatial resolution (0.5 km) is affected by a change in the effective resolution for off-nadir observation and by inaccurate registration. The resulting noise in the measurements precludes an accurate measurement of the BRDF at such a scale.
