The method is based on 1) using commercially available sand and gravel as reference targets and 2) the calibration of these reference targets in the laboratory conditions to know their backscatter properties. We have investigated the target properties crucial for accurate and consistent reflectance calibration and present a set of ideal targets easily available for calibration purposes. The first results from LIDAR-based brightness measurement of grass and sand show that the gravel-based calibration approach works in practice, is cost effective, and produces statistically meaningful results: Comparison of results from two separate airborne laser scanning campaigns shows that the relative calibration produces repeatable reflectance values. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Automatic mapping of urban materials from remotely sensed radiance images remains difficult because of the complex phenomena induced by relief. Indeed, shadows and environment effects disrupt the radiance reaching the sensor. The measured radiance also depends on the illumination conditions of the observed area. This paper describes a new physical model, ICARE, able to solve the radiative transfer inversion problem in urban areas, in the reflective domain (0.4–2.5 µm), from high spatial and spectral resolution images. This new approach takes into account the relief, the spatial heterogeneity of the scene and atmospheric effects, in order to extract rigorously the ground surface reflectance. The resolution method consists of modelling separately the irradiance and radiance components at ground and sensor levels. Three input data are required to solve this inverse problem: atmospheric parameters (aerosol type and visibility), 3D digital vector models of the scene, and spectral at-sensor calibrated images of the scene. The validation of ICARE is checked through the CAPITOUL field campaign, carried out over Toulouse (France). Measurements were performed using two airborne Pelican image systems consisting of 8 high spatial (20 cm) and spectral (30 nm) resolution cameras. Results are presented over typical urban structures in Toulouse center. ICARE performance is expected to be better than 0.04 in the reflectance retrieval, even in shadowed areas. To quantify the gain brought by ICARE, a comparison between classification based on radiance and retrieved reflectance images, obtained by inversion, is introduced. The results show that the classification is improved from 54% for a flat ground assumption to 74% using ICARE. [Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) The topographic effect on land surface reflectance is an important factor affecting quantitative analysis of remotely sensed data in mountainous regions. Different approaches have been developed to reduce topographical effects. Of the many methods, the Minnaert correction method is most frequently used for topographic correction, but a single global Minnaert value used in previous research cannot effectively reduce topographic effects on the remotely sensed data, especially in the areas with steep slopes. This paper explores the method to develop a pixel-based Minnaert coefficient image based on the established relationship between Minnaert coefficients and topographic slopes. A texture measure based on homogeneity is used to evaluate the topographic correction result. This study has demonstrated promising in reducing topographic effects on the Landsat ETM+ image with the pixel-based Minnaert correction method. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) The polarization ratio (VV/HH) of normalized radar cross section over ocean surface is processed from Envisat advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) alternating polarization (AP) data and compared with existing electromagnetic (EM) scattering models. The processing of the AP data is based on LevelO (raw data) product that enables us to accurately compute the contribution from additive noise separately from each burst. This is important in estimating the correct polarization ratio, particularly at higher incidence angles where the relative contribution from noise becomes severe. A recently published EM scattering model, general curvature method (GCM), is extended here to incorporate scattering from breaking waves. The performance of this model with and without breaking waves is compared with AP data and with other models for the polarization ratio. The extended GCM model is furthermore used to assess the performance of wind speed retrieval in HH polarization. The inclusion of wave breaking in the GCM model reduces the polarization ratio standard deviation from 0.64 to 0.50 and the bias from -0.34 to 0.16, as compared to the measured ASAR AP polarization ratio. The best semiempirical model from literature gives 0.51 and 0.63 for the standard deviation and bias, respectively. The difference in performance is shown to be caused by the wind speed dependence not accounted for in the semiempirical model. Validation of the new polarization ratio model in combination with C-band Model Function (CMOD) for wind speed retrieval at HH polarization shows similar performance as at VV polarization. We conclude that the GCM polarization ratio model incorporating wave-breaking effects is found to reproduce well polarization ratio measurements (ASAR AP) versus wind vector and incidence angle.
