It was the first seminar of cartography theorists after the last 19th ICC held in Ottawa. Certainly, it was not a "cartography theorists summit. It was a twoday working seminar where the Commission continued its activities. The program included 12 papers. One can group them into three topics: cartographic semiotics (6 papers), map language and map communication (4), and varia (2). Eight papers are presented in the proceedings. The goals for the seminar were to allow all participants to report on their current theoretical or theoretictechnological research, to activate and to support in particular young scientists, to develop the traditional cooperations between Eastern and Western cartography theoretists. In addition, four doctorate students presented their papers. The next seminar of this type is planned for July 2002 at the Gdansk University (Poland). In the final stage of the preparation of these proceedings I got information from Moscow that the member of our Commission, Prof. Alexander Liouty, unexpectedly passed away.
