[Termes IGN] Total ozone mapping spectrometerRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the results and satellite intercomparisons for the retrieval of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and land surface bidirectional reflectance using the Multiangle Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR). The algorithm developed is based on inversion of a physical model of light scattering that requires no a priori knowledge of the land surface. The model is evaluated for a number of sites around the world to test its operation over a range of aerosol types and land covers including dark and bright surfaces. Validation is performed using Aerosol Robotic Network ground-based sun-photometer measurements and by intercomparison with independent estimates of AOD derived from spaceborne instruments including Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) aerosol products. Results show good agreement (Pearson's correlation coefficient r2=0.70 for all sites combined) between the AATSR-derived estimates of AOD and the sun-photometer measurements. There is also a high correlation (r2=0.84) between the AATSR- and MISR-derived AOD estimates, but the correlations of the AATSR-derived AOD with MODIS-derived AOD and TOMS aerosol index are lower. In addition, the ability of the sensor to discriminate between different aerosol types is evaluated. Moreover, the estimates of the aerosol properties are used for atmospheric correction of the top-of-atmosphere reflectance. The AATSR surface reflectances are compared with the MODIS bidirectional reflectance distribution function/Albedo and MISR surface products and are shown to correspond with root-mean-square errors of 0.03 and 0.06 or better, respectively. The retrieval method is applied on an image basis resulting in an image of surface reflectance and a separate map of AOD. A map of AOD at 550 nm covering the Sahel and southern Sahara region is presented to demonstrate operation at regional and potentially global scales. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) Due to the limitations of infrared remote sensing, sea surface temperature (SST) can be derived only under clear sky conditions from the infrared channels like those in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR), where as microwave radiometers can provide SST even under cloudy conditions. However, the accuracy of SST derived from the microwave sensor is less with a poor spatial resolution. In this study, SSTs over the Arabian Sea derived from NOAA-AVHRR and Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS-P4) multi-frequency scanning microwave radiometer (MSMR) observations have been compared on weekly basis with a view to blend these two observations, so that SST can be provided continuously even under cloudy conditions. The NOAA-AVHRR derived pathfinder SSTs with spatial resolution of 18 km were averaged to 1.5°*1.5° grid resolutions to match with MSMR observations. The analysis was carried out during 2000. Statistical analysis of the NOAA-AVHRR SST shows that the spatial variation of SST within 1.5° grid is negligible compared with the MSMR accuracy of 1.52°C. Thus the comparison of SST from these two sources with different spatial resolution is reasonable. The RMS difference is 1.55°C with a correlation coefficient of 0.73. After removing the seasonal bias, the RMS difference reduced to 0.66°C and the coefficient of correlation improved to 0.89. The correlation coefficient between the two observations has further improved to 0.90 and the RMS difference reduced to 0.53°C when the averaging was done using 5°*5° grid resolution. The accuracy of satellite derived SSTs are also evaluated with the moored buoy observations over the Arabian Sea. The accuracy of MSMR SST observations have improved if 95% confidence level data is considered. The results indicate the possibility of replacing the data gaps in AVHRR SSTs with MSMR estimations after adjusting for the seasonal biases. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) For monitoring environmental changes, new digital remote sensors have become available that allow monitoring and change detection analyses at resolutions and scales that were deemed impossible just a few years ago. The advent of airborne stereo scanners of ultra high spatial resolution offers the possibility of a complete digital remote sensing processing System. Current sensors include the High-resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), the ADS-40, and the Digital Mapping Camera (DMC). For automated analysis, however, the new sensors require also new processing techniques. This paper presents results of change monitoring analyses for areas along the shorelines of the Elbe and Weser rivers in North Germany using integrated HRSC and GIS datasets. An automated procedure for highly accurate mapping was developed which is based on a hierarchical stepwise approach integrating GIS methods and digital surface information in this process. This approach allows the production of GIS maps that are more detailed and accurate than those that were previously produced by conventional means. Within the GIS environment, the multitemporal analysis also allows the exact quantification and location of changes of the protected biotope types. [Termes IGN] image obliqueRésumé : (Auteur) The 2006 edition of the ASPRS Annual Conference was held in Reno, Nevada between 1st and 5th may and attracted 1350 participants. As usual they were offered the first-class technical exhibition that we have come to expect at this meeting. Almost all the major system suppliers and software houses were present, as were several of the main commercial providers of mapping services in North America. Besides which, all the major U.S. government agencies concerned with mapping (USGS, NOAA, NIMA, EPA, NASA) had interesting displays. However a special feature of this year's technical exhibition was the introduction of a number of new airborne digital frame cameras based on the latest generation of larger-format CCD area arrays that have been released by the manufacturers over the last half-year or so. These arrays provide a substantial increase in performance, especially in terms of the ground coverage and resolution that can be achieved within an individual frame image. Besides these important products, the exhibition also saw the launch of a new airborne multiple camera system and a new airborne pushbroom scanner, both designed to acquire oblique digital imagery. Yet another introduction was that of a new model of an airborne laser scanner. On the DPW front, the exhibition saw the introduction of a number of stereo-displays, including an example of an auto-stereoscopic system, as well as numerous enhancements to DPW software. [Termes IGN] récepteurRésumé : (Editeur) Before GPS, even before satellites, there was LOng RAnge Navigation, or LORAN. Using terrestrial radio transmitters, it was developed during World War II for aircraft navigation. The wartime system evolved by the mid-1950s into the present day 100 kHz LORAN-C system. LORAN's standard principle of op-eration is hyperbolic positioning. A receiver measures the difference in times of arrival of pulses transmitted by a chain of three to six synchronized stations sep--arated by hundreds of kilometers. The time-difference measurement derived from the signals of two stations, when multiplied by the speed of propagation of the signals, forms a line of position (LOP); the receiver could be anywhere on this line and give the same measurement. The geometrical form of this LOP is a hyperbola. Measurements using a third station provide an-other hyperbola, which intersects the first at the position of the receiver. There are many LORAN chains around the globe.
The LORAN system is being modernized to enhance its accuracy, integrity, availability, and continuity. Vacuum-tube transmitters are being replaced with solid-state designs and new primary frequency standards are being installed at transmitting stations. Manufacturers have developed compact LORAN receivers able to track multiple transmitters simultaneously and to automatically apply propagation bias corrections. Some receivers are integrated with GPS or other sensors. Receivers also feature improved antenna designs. Collectively, these improvements are known as Enhanced LORAN or eLORAN for short. Additionally, LORAN signals can be used to convey differential GPS corrections. Such a system is already operational in Europe. Supported by the Coast Guard and the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States, a goal of eLORAN is to provide non-precision approach for aviation users and harbor entrance and approach for marine users. Land users will benefit, too. Since LORAN has different signal characteristics from those of GPS, it can be used in locations where GPS cannot by itself or in conjunction with GPS and other sensors. In this month's column, we look at a system that combines eLORAN with GPS and dead reckoning to overcome some of the problems in navigating in big cities.
