[Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) In the present study the influence of the scanner parameters, scan resolution (angular step size), scan speed (number of laser pulses per second), and pulse duration, on tree stem detection, stem diameter and volume extraction from phase-shift FARO Photon 120 TLS data was assessed. Additionally the effects of a data post processing (filtering of raw scan data) were investigated. All analyses were carried out based on single and merged scan data. It could be shown that scan speed, pulse duration and data filtering only marginally affect stem detection rates and stem diameter and volume estimation accuracies. By contrast scan resolution was found to have an effect, the magnitude of which, however, is range-dependent. For example mean stem detection rates for the three different scan resolutions tested were found to be equal in near range, but decreased more strongly for the lower scan resolutions in far range. With regard to the stem diameter extraction, scan resolution did not affect stem diameter at breast height (DBH) estimation accuracy, but limited the range within which DBH could be reliably extracted. The root mean squared error (RMSE) for DBH extracted from the single scan data was found to be significantly larger compared to the RMSE for DBH extracted from the merged scan data. Single scan data yielded stem volume estimates with lower accuracies, too. This study demonstrated that it is possible to maximize sampling efficiency by using scanner parameter sets with low scanning times (i.e., low scan resolution, high scan speed) without significantly losing estimation accuracy. If maximum accuracy is desired for both DBH and stem volume, the acquisition of multiple scans with a subsequent data merging is required. [Termes IGN] réponse spectraleRésumé : (Auteur) Cross-calibration of satellite sensors permits the quantitative comparison of measurements obtained from different Earth Observing (EO) systems. Cross-calibration studies usually use simultaneous or near-simultaneous observations from several spaceborne sensors to develop band-by-band relationships through regression analysis. The investigation described in this paper focuses on evaluation of the uncertainties inherent in the cross-calibration process, including contributions due to different spectral responses, spectral resolution, spectral filter shift, geometric misregistrations, and spatial resolutions. The hyperspectral data from the Environmental Satellite SCanning Imaging Absorption SpectroMeter for Atmospheric CartograpHY and the EO-1 Hyperion, along with the relative spectral responses (RSRs) from the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (TM) Plus and the Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer sensors, were used for the spectral uncertainty study. The data from Landsat 5 TM over five representative land cover types (desert, rangeland, grassland, deciduous forest, and coniferous forest) were used for the geometric misregistrations and spatial-resolution study. The spectral resolution uncertainty was found to be within 0.25%, spectral filter shift within 2.5%, geometric misregistrations within 0.35%, and spatial-resolution effects within 0.1% for the Libya 4 site. The one-sigma uncertainties presented in this paper are uncorrelated, and therefore, the uncertainties can be summed orthogonally. Furthermore, an overall total uncertainty was developed. In general, the results suggested that the spectral uncertainty is more dominant compared to other uncertainties presented in this paper. Therefore, the effect of the sensor RSR differences needs to be quantified and compensated to avoid large uncertainties in cross-calibration results. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial lidar (TLS) is an emerging technology for deriving forest attributes, including conventional inventory and canopy characterizations. However, little is known about the influence of scanner specifications on derived forest parameters. We compared two TLS systems at two sites in British Columbia. Common scanning benchmarks and identical algorithms were used to obtain estimates of tree diameter, position, and canopy characteristics. Visualization of range images and point clouds showed clear differences, even though both scanners were relatively high-resolution instruments. These translated into quantifiable differences in impulse penetration, characterization of stems and crowns far from the scan location, and gap fraction. Differences between scanners in estimates of effective plant area index were greater than differences between sites. Both scanners provided a detailed digital model of forest structure, and gross structural characterizations (including crown dimensions and position) were relatively robust; but comparison of canopy density metrics may require consideration of scanner attributes. [Termes IGN] International Terrestrial Reference FrameRésumé : (auteur) We develop a method to evaluate the terrestrial reference frame (TRF) scale rate error using Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite antenna phase center offset (APCO) parameters and apply it to ITRF2008. We search for the TRF in which z-APCO parameters have the smallest drift. In order to provide realistic error bars for the z-APCO drifts, we pay attention to model periodic variations and auto-correlated noise processes in the z-APCO time series. We will show that the GPS scale rate with respect to a frame is, as a first approximation, proportional to the estimated mean z-APCO trend if that frame is used to constrain station positions. Thus, an ITRF2008 scale rate error between - 0.27 and - 0.06 mm/yr depending on the GPS analysis center can be estimated, which demonstrates the high quality of the newly constructed ITRF2008. We will also demonstrate that the traditional estimates of the GPS scale rate from 7-parameter similarity transformations are consistent with our newly derived GPS scale rates with respect to ITRF2008 within two sigmas. We find using International GNSS Service (IGS) products that the traditional approach is relevant for scale rate determination even if some of the z-APCO values supplied by the IGS were not simultaneously calibrated. As the scale rate is related to the accuracy of vertical velocities, our estimates supply a conservative evaluation that can be used for error budget computation.
