[Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (auteur) Managing fire, water, biodiversity and carbon stocks can greatly benefit from early warning of changes in the state of vegetation. While near-real time tools to detect forest change based on satellite remote sensing exist, these ecosystems have relatively stable natural vegetation dynamics. Open (i.e. non-forest) ecosystems like grasslands, savannas and shrublands are more challenging as they show complex natural dynamics due to factors such as fire, postfire recovery, greater contribution of bare soil to observed vegetation indices, as well as high sensitivity to rainfall and strong seasonality. Tools to aid the management of open ecosystems are desperately required as they dominate much of the globe and harbour substantial biodiversity and carbon. We present an innovative approach that overcomes the difficulties posed by open ecosystems by using a spatio-temporal hierarchical Bayesian model that uses data on climate, topography, soils and fire history to generate ecological forecasts of the expected land surface signal under natural conditions. This allows us to monitor and detect abrupt or gradual changes in the state of an ecosystem in near-real time by identifying areas where the observed vegetation signal has deviated from the expected natural variation. We apply our approach to a case study from the hyperdiverse fire-dependent African shrubland, the fynbos of the Cape Floristic Region, a Global Biodiversity Hotspot and UNESCO World Heritage Site that faces a number of threats to vegetation health and ecosystem function. The case study demonstrates that our approach is useful for identifying a range of change agents such as fire, alien plant species invasions, drought, pathogen outbreaks and clearing of vegetation. We describe and provide our full workflow, including an interactive web application. Our approach is highly versatile, allowing us to collect data on the impacts of change agents for research in ecology and earth system science, and to predict aspects of ecosystem structure and function such as biomass, fire return interval and the influence of vegetation on hydrology Numéro de notice : A2020-349 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : BIODIVERSITE/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2020.05.017 Date de publication en ligne : 05/06/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2020.05.017 Format de la ressource électronique : url article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=95231

[Termes IGN] Terre (planète)Résumé : (auteur) Signal propagation through-the-Earth (TTE) is of great importance to geophysicists searching for underground resources such as oil and gas, homeland defense searching for tunnels and underground structures, and mining operations. The Earth is a conductive medium, unlike air or space, which tends to “short-out” electromagnetic fields traditionally used for wireless communications. The magnitude of this effect depends on many factors, such as frequency and the type of Earth-material. Mathematical models of energy propagation have been developed to help us understand the signal propagation issues, and some models can be used to predict the performance of the specific electromagnetic energies being used. There are numerous ways of modeling the Earth to study energy propagation. Some early literature presented models of signal propagation through a homogeneous Earth. These were fairly accurate for signals traveling from one point in the Earth to another point. However, signals traveling from below the ground to the surface of the Earth encounter many different layers of the Earth. This realization led to the development of models of a layered Earth. A novel layered-Earth communication model is presented and evaluated as to its accuracy by using measured data gathered during TTE communication tests from 2007 to 2012. Evaluations show that the new layered-EARTH model provides improved accuracy for the prediction of signal propagation performance from within a subterranean space, such as a mine, to and from the surface of the Earth. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Fires are among the most damaging disturbances to forests in the Mediterranean area. The study analyses the occurrence and characteristics of forest fires in Eastern Spain (1993–2015) to identify key variables related to burnt forest land, differentiating fires according to their burnt area. Data are retrieved from digital cartography, the Spanish Forest Map and data concerning fires. Based on previous research, the variables included are altitude, slope, aspect, fuel, species, population and road density. The fires are classified in small (5–50 ha), medium (50–500 ha) and large (> 500 ha). Four models are considered to explain the proportion of burnt area based on weighted generalized linear models: a general model and one per size class. The results highlight the different relations of similar variables with fires according to the size. When a single model is considered to explain all area burnt, the relationships are mainly driven by large fires. The larger area is burnt on forests with pine, bushes and small trees, whereas smaller fires tend to occur on lower altitude, low slope, high population and road densities. There are large differences in the variables according to the fire sizes, especially for the presence of pine (negative in the medium fires model but positive for the large fires model) and Pasture (which only explains the small fires). The models can be applied to analyse occurrence by fire size in Mediterranean areas, and the results can help elaborate fire prevention strategies and land-planning schemes. [Termes IGN] tourismeRésumé : (auteur) Previous studies on tourism land use primarily focus on the spatial distribution, and its related impacts on the environment. Here, we propose a future tourism land use simulation model for mountain vacations based on the cellular automata and Markov chain methods, having verified and simulated tourism land use in Emeishan city at a spatial resolution of 30 × 30 m using remote sensing and GIS. In addition, we introduced a tourism land use intensity index to study the spatial expansion mode of tourism land use. The results have confirmed the validity of the model and demonstrated its ability to simulate future tourism land use. The average growth rate of tourism land use from 2010 to 2015 is 33.36%, and tourism land use will rise from 1.26% of Emeishan city’s land area in 2015 to 2.95% in 2030. Tourism land use shows a spatial expansion pattern along channels from scenic spots to the urban area. The growth of tourism land use in the protected area has an increasing trend when there is no restriction on development, especially in the Eshan region. The simulation results can provide useful implications and guides for regional tourism planning and management. [Termes IGN] vectorisationRésumé : (auteur) National historical map resources are assessed in four European countries to characterize river corridor features and associated channel changes, as well as identify issues limiting or promoting geomorphic assessment procedures at a continental scale. A geomorphic audit that launches potential data for diagnosis from reach to continental scales could offer a good resource for biology and ecology managers of river authorities or government agencies and engineers. The assessment compares the resources available by country in terms of period covered, spatial scale, history and chronology, and representation of the fluvial corridor features. We then applied the Historical Maps Vectorization Toolbox, initially developed for vectorizing river corridors from French maps, to detect and extract flow channels, unvegetated bars and riparian vegetation patches from historical topographical maps. We found that (a) it is difficult to apply an audit of channel changes to the whole continental scale because map legends differ between countries due to geographic and political specificity; (b) there exists an opportunity to get assessment information in all countries at reach or national scale where map resources are available; (c) the highest potential is observed in Switzerland and Belgium where there is high quality national map coverage from the 19th century; and (d) the algorithm Historical Maps Vectorization Toolbox applied to map resources works well with any of the countries, and its widespread application is encouraging.
