[Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (Auteur) Fluvial corridor quality assessment requires that historical data be collected at a regional scale. In this article, our goal is to assess potential map resources to explore riverscape changes at a regional network scale and to define key issues in using an automated vectorization protocol to characterize such changes on such a large scale. We consider IGN’s Nouvelle Carte de France a potentially good resource for our objective of two-date (oldest + actual vector database) comparisons on 1:20,000–1:25,000 scale maps, notably when applied at a regional scale. The French IGN corpus is a good example of topographic maps that were produced in the twentieth century in Europe with fairly homogeneous data over a whole national territory. Moreover, the digitization and georeferencing processes applied by IGN are very accurate. The evolution of conventional features is not as significant for the hydrographic theme and should not be a problem for automatic vectorization. The potential temporal coverage is from 1922 to 1993, but the complexity of the sheet divisions, partial revisions, and the heterogeneity of coverage over time prevent multidate analysis. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Climate change will induce a change in fire frequency in Mediterranean region and that could impact fire-adapted plant species. We showed that fire-related traits of some pine species are strongly related to other factors than fire but the recent fire history has nonetheless an impact on the variation of key traits for different fire adaptive strategies.
Context: In fire-prone Mediterranean areas, climate change is expected to exacerbate the fire pressure on ecosystems, altering the current fire regime and threatening species if they cannot acclimate.
Aims: Studying intraspecific variations of some fire-related traits in relation to variation in recent fire activity is thus an important step to better understand if this acclimation is possible.
Methods: We measured structural (bark thickness, shoot bulk density, self-pruning, leaf surface to volume ratio) and functional (serotiny level for Pinus halepensis only) traits in two pines species (Pinus halepensis and Pinus sylvestris) commonly found in southeastern France and that present different fire-adaptive strategies (resilience vs resistance, respectively). Populations were sampled according to different fire frequency modalities (0 vs 1 to 2 fires) along a geographical gradient, measuring numerous environmental and plant characteristics to be used cofactors in the analyses.
Results: As expected, trait variation was strongly linked to environmental and tree characteristics as well as to ontogeny overriding the effect of fire modalities, even though using integrative models with random effect. However, fire modalities had an impact on the variance of some key fire-related traits of Pinus halepensis.

[Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (auteur) The availability of vast amounts of location-based data from social media platforms such as Twitter has enabled us to look deeply into the dynamics of human movement. The aim of this paper is to leverage a large collection of geo-tagged tweets and the street networks of two major metropolitan areas—London and Tokyo—to explore the underlying mechanism that determines the heterogeneity of human mobility patterns. For the two target cities, hundreds of thousands of tweet locations and road segments were processed to generate city hotspots and natural streets. User movement trajectories and city hotspots were then used to build a hotspot network capable of quantitatively characterizing the heterogeneous movement patterns of people within the cities. To emulate observed movement patterns, the study conducts a two-level agent-based simulation that includes random walks through the hotspot networks and movements in the street networks using each of three distance types—metric, angular and combined. Comparisons of the simulated and observed movement flows at the segment and street levels show that the heterogeneity of human urban movements at the collective level is mainly shaped by the scaling structure of the urban space. As the on-demand acquisition of pre-event very high-resolution (VHR) images is typically limited, PlanetScope (PS) offers daily images of global coverage, thereby providing favorable opportunities to obtain high-resolution pre-event images. In this study, we propose an unsupervised change detection framework that uses post-fire VHR images with pre-fire PS data to facilitate the assessment of wildfire damage. To minimize the time and cost of human intervention, the entire process was executed in an unsupervised manner from image selection to change detection. First, to select clear pre-fire PS images, a blur kernel was adopted for the blind and automatic evaluation of local image quality. Subsequently, pseudo-training data were automatically generated from contextual features regardless of the statistical distribution of the data, whereas spectral and textural features were employed in the change detection procedure to fully exploit the properties of different features. The proposed method was validated in a case study of the 2019 Gangwon wildfire in South Korea, using post-fire GeoEye-1 (GE-1) and pre-fire PS images. The experimental results verified the effectiveness of the proposed change detection method, achieving an overall accuracy of over 99% with low false alarm rate (FAR), which is comparable to the accuracy level of the supervised approach. The proposed unsupervised framework accomplished efficient wildfire damage assessment without any prior information by utilizing the multiple features from multi-sensor bi-temporal images. [Termes IGN] urbanismeRésumé : (Auteur) This research attempts to build a unified framework for distinguishing the spatiotemporal visit patterns of urban places by different social groups using mobile phone data in Harbin, China. Social groups are detected by their social ties in the ego‐to‐ego mobile phone call network and are embedded in physical space according to their home locations. Popular urban places are detected from user‐generated content as the basic spatial analysis unit. Coupling subscribers’ footprints and urban places in physical space, the spatiotemporal visit patterns of urban places by distinct social groups are uncovered and interpreted by non‐negative matrix factorization. The proposed framework enables us to answer several critical questions from three perspectives: (1) How to model popular urban places in terms of vague boundary, land use, and semantic features based on crowdsourcing data?; (2) How to evaluate interaction between individuals for inspecting the relationship between spatial proximity and social ties based on spatiotemporal co‐occurrence?; and (3) How to distinguish urban place visit preferences for social groups associated with different socio‐demographic characteristics? Our research could assist urban planners and municipal managers to identify critical urban places frequented by different population groups according to their roles and social/cultural characteristics for improvement of urban facility allocation.
