[Termes IGN] reconnaissance de formesRésumé : (auteur) Data, maps and services of the national mapping and cadastral agencies contain geometric information on buildings, particularly building footprints. However, building type information is often not included. In this paper, we propose a data-driven approach for automatic classification of building footprints that make use of pattern recognition and machine learning techniques. Using a Random Forest Classifier the suitability of five different data sources (e.g. topographic raster maps, cadastral databases or digital landscape models) is investigated with respect to the achieved accuracies. The results of this study show that building footprints obtained from topographic databases such as digital landscape models, cadastral databases or 3D city models can be classified with an accuracy of 90–95%. When classifying building footprints on the basis of topographic maps the accuracy is considerably lower (as of 76–88%). The automatic classification of building footprints provides an important contribution to the acquisition of new small-scale indicators on settlement structure, such as building density, floor space ratio or dwelling/population densities. In addition to its importance for urban research and planning, the results are also relevant for cartographic disciplines, such as map generalization, automated mapping and geovisualization. [Termes IGN] SuèdeRésumé : (auteur) The amount of volunteered geographic information (VGI) has increased over the past decade, and several studies have been conducted to evaluate the quality of VGI data. In this study, we evaluate the completeness of the road network in the VGI data set OpenStreetMap (OSM). The evaluation is based on an accurate and efficient network-matching algorithm. The study begins with a comparison of the two main strategies for network matching: segment-based and node-based matching. The comparison shows that the result quality is comparable for the two strategies, but the node-based result is considerably more computationally efficient. Therefore, we improve the accuracy of node-based algorithm by handling topological relationships and detecting patterns of complicated network components. Finally, we conduct a case study on the extended node-based algorithm in which we match OSM to the Swedish National Road Database (NVDB) in Scania, Sweden. The case study reveals that OSM has a completeness of 87% in the urban areas and 69% in the rural areas of Scania. The accuracy of the matching process is approximately 95%. The conclusion is that the extended node-based algorithm is sufficiently accurate and efficient for conducting surveys of the quality of OSM and other VGI road data sets in large geographic regions. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) In map generalization, the displacement operation attempts to resolve proximity conflicts to guarantee map legibility. Owing to the limited representation space, conflicts may occur between both the same and different features under different contexts. A successful displacement should settle multiple conflicts, suppress the generation of secondary conflicts after moving some objects, and preserve the distribution patterns. The effect of displacement can be understood as a force that pushes related objects away with properties of propagation and distance decay. This study borrows the idea of vector fields from physics discipline and establishes a vector field model to handle the displacement of multiple conflicts in building generalization. A scalar field is first constructed based on a Delaunay triangulation skeleton to partition the buildings being examined (e.g., a street block). Then, we build a vector field to conduct displacement measurements through the detection of conflicts from multiple sources. The direction and magnitude of the displacement force are computed based on an iso-line model of vector field. The experiment shows that this global method can settle multiple conflicts and preserve the spatial relations and important building patterns.
