Developing more robust models to improve the reliability of flood discharge estimations is thus very useful. The role of ecological attributes including land use/land cover (LULC), hydrologic soil groups (HSG), and watershed physical characteristics (area, main stream length, average slope), and watershed shape coefficients (form, compactness, circularity, and elongation) in explaining the overall variation in flood magnitude in 39 watersheds, located in the southern basin of the Caspian Sea, was investigated. As the LULC and HSG were found to play a significant role in explaining total variation (40–89%) in flood magnitudes, their inclusion in the estimation of flood magnitudes can provide more reliable estimates of flood risk and magnitude. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (auteur) The urban heat island (UHI) is increasingly recognized as a serious, worldwide problem because of urbanization and climate change. Urban vegetation is capable of alleviating UHI and improving urban environment by shading together with evapotranspiration. While the impacts of abundance and spatial configuration of vegetation on land surface temperature (LST) have been widely examined, very little attention has been paid to the role of vertical structure of vegetation in regulating LST. In this study, we investigated the relationships between horizontal/vertical structure characteristics of urban tree canopy and LST as well as diurnal divergence in Nanjing City, China, with the help of high resolution vegetation map, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data and various statistical analysis methods. The results indicated that composition, configuration and vertical structure of tree canopy were all significantly related to both daytime LST and nighttime LST. Tree canopy showed stronger influence on LST during the day than at night. Note that the contribution of composition of tree canopy to explaining spatial heterogeneity of LST, regardless of day and night, was the highest, followed by vertical structure and configuration. Combining composition, configuration and vertical structure of tree canopy can take advantage of their respective advantages, and best explain variation in both daytime LST and nighttime LST. As for the independent importance of factors affecting spatial variation of LST, percent cover of tree canopy (PLAND), mean tree canopy height (TH_Mean), amplitude of tree canopy height (TA) and patch cohesion index (COHESION) were the most influential during the day, while the most important variables were PLAND, maximum height of tree canopy (TH_Max), variance of tree canopy height (TH_SD) and COHESION at night. This research extends our understanding of the impacts of urban trees on the UHI effect from the horizontal to three-dimensional space. In addition, it may offer sustainable and effective strategies for urban designers and planners to cope with increasing temperature. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (auteur) Vector-based cellular automata (VCA) models have been applied in land use change simulations at fine scales. However, the neighborhood effects of the driving factors are rarely considered in the exploration of the transition suitability of cells, leading to lower simulation accuracy. This study proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN)-VCA model that adopts the CNN to extract the high-level features of the driving factors within a neighborhood of an irregularly shaped cell and discover the relationships between multiple land use changes and driving factors at the neighborhood level. The proposed model was applied to simulate urban land use changes in Shenzhen, China. Compared with several VCA models using other machine learning methods, the proposed CNN-VCA model obtained the highest simulation accuracy (figure-of-merit = 0.361). The results indicated that the CNN-VCA model can effectively uncover the neighborhood effects of multiple driving factors on the developmental potential of land parcels and obtain more details on the morphological characteristics of land parcels. Moreover, the land use patterns of 2020 and 2025 under an ecological control strategy were simulated to provide decision support for urban planning. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (auteur) Long-term exposure to contaminated water can cause health effects, such as cancer. Accurate spatial prediction of inorganic compounds (e.g. arsenic) and pathogens in groundwater is critical for water supply management. Ideally, environmental health agencies would have access to an early warning system to alert well owners of risks of such contamination. The estimation and dissemination of these risks can be facilitated by the combination of Geographic Information Systems and spatial analysis capabilities – i.e., spatial decision support system (SDSS). However, the use of SDSS, especially web-based SDSS, is rare for spatially explicit studies of drinking water quality of private wells. In this study, we introduce the interactive Well Water Risk Estimation(iWWRE), a web-based SDSS to facilitate the monitoring of water contamination in private wells across Gaston County, North Carolina (US). Our system implements geoprocessing web services and generates dynamic spatial analysis results based on a database of private wells. Environmental health scientists using our system can conduct fine-grained spatial interpolation on 1) a particular type of contaminant such as arsenic, 2) on various subsets through a temporal query. Visuals consist of an estimation map, cross validation information, Kriging variance and contour lines that delineate areas with maximum contaminant levels (MCL), as set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Our web-based SDSS was developed jointly with environmental health specialists who found it particularly critical for the monitoring of local contamination trends, and a useful tool to reach out to private well users in highly elevated contaminated areas. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (auteur) The combined study of vegetation coverage (VC) and land use change provides important scientific guidance for the restoration and protection of arid regions. Taking Hongjian Nur (HJN) Lake in the desert region as a case study, the VC of this area was calculated using a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), which is based on a mixed pixel decomposition method. A grey forecasting model (GM) (1, 1) was used to predict future VC. The driving factors of VC and land use change were analyzed. The results indicate that the average VC of the whole watershed showed a gradual increase from 0.29 to 0.49 during 2000–2017. The prediction results of the GM VC showed that the greening trend is projected to continue until 2027. The area of farmland in the watershed increased significantly and its area was mainly converted from unused land, grassland, and forest. The reason for increased VC may be that the combination of the exploitation of unused land and climate change, which is contrary to the country’s sustainable development goals (SDG; goal 15). Therefore, the particularities of the local ecological environment in China’s desert area needs to be considered in the development of ecological engineering projects.
