[Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The increasing prevalence of user-generated, or volunteered, geographic information is changing established practices of spatial data production and use in ways that were largely unanticipated in nature or in scope. This paper investigates one dimension of VGI use that has received relatively little attention to date, namely the influence of different cartographic visualisation methods on citizens' ability to explore and understand VGI. Following a brief review of key challenges related to VGI use, the paper describes a web-based software prototype that was designed to allow users to compare several simple geovisualisation and data filtering techniques for VGI exploration. Next, attention is directed to a specific study context where citizens used the software tool to explore a rich data set of locally-produced VGI related to community assets. The paper concludes with a discussion of the results from this experiment. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) Recent advances in Web-related technologies have significantly promoted the wide sharing and integrated analysis of distributed geospatial data. Geospatial applications often involve diverse sources of data and complex geoprocessing functions. Existing Web-based GIS focuses more on access to distributed geospatial data. In scientific problem solving, the ability to carry out geospatial analysis is essential to geoscientific discovery. This article presents the design and implementation of GeoPW, a set of services providing geoprocessing functions over the Web. The concept of the Geospatial Processing Web is discussed to address the geoprocessing demands in the emerging information infrastructure, and the role of GeoPW in establishing the Geospatial Processing Web is identified. The services in GeoPW are implemented by developing middleware that wraps legacy GIS analysis components to provide a large number of geoprocessing utilities over the Web. These services are open and accessible to the public, and they support integrated geoprocessing on the Web. [Termes IGN] projectionRésumé : (Auteur) The design of new map projections has up until now required mathematical and cartographic expertise that has limited this activity to a small group of specialists. This article introduces the background mathematics for a software-based method that enables cartographers to easily design new small-scale world map projections. The software is usable even by those without mathematical expertise. A new projection is designed interactively in an iterative process that allows the designer to graphically and numerically assess the graticule, the representation of the continents, and the distortion properties of the new projection. The method has been implemented in Flex Projector, a free and open-source application enabling users to quickly create new map projections and modify existing projections. We also introduce new tools that help evaluate the distortion properties of projections, namely a configurable acceptance index to assess areal and angular distortion, a derived acceptance visualization, and interactive profiles through the distortion space of a projection. To illustrate the proposed method, a new projection, the Cropped Ginzburg VIII projection, is presented.
