[Termes IGN] teneur en chlorophylle des feuillesRésumé : (auteur) Spectral measurements are commonly applied for the nondestructive estimation of leaf parameters, such as the concentrations of chlorophyll a and b, carotenoid, anthocyanin, brown pigment, leaf water content, and leaf mass per area for the quantification of vegetation physiology. The most popular way to estimate these parameters is by using spectral vegetation indices. The use of biochemical models allows us to use the full wavelength range (400–2500 nm) and to physically interpret the result. However, their performance is usually lower than that of supervised machine learning regression techniques. Machine learning regression techniques, on the other hand, have the disadvantage that the relationship between estimated parameters and the reflectance/transmission spectra is unclear. In this article, a hybrid between a supervised learning method and physical modeling for the estimation of leaf parameters is proposed. In this method, a machine learning regression technique is applied to learn a mapping from the true hyperspectral data set to a data set that follows the PROSPECT model. The PROSPECT model then reveals the actual leaf parameters. Two mapping methods, based on Gaussian processes (GPs) and kernel ridge regression (KRR) are proposed. As an alternative, mapping onto the leaf absorption spectra is proposed as well. The proposed methodology not only estimates the leaf parameters with a lower error but also solves the interpretation problem of the parameters estimated by the advanced machine learning regression techniques. This method is validated on the ANGERS and LOPEX data set. [Termes IGN] trafic routierRésumé : (Auteur) Navigation and orientation while walking in urban spaces pose serious challenges for blind pedestrians, sometimes even on a daily basis. Research shows the practicability of computerized weighted network route planning algorithms based on OpenStreetMap mapping data for calculating customized routes for blind pedestrians. While data about pedestrians and vehicle traffic flow at different times throughout the day influence the route choices of blind pedestrians, such data do not exist in OpenStreetMap. Quantifying the correlation between spatial structure and traffic flow could be used to fill this gap. As such, we investigated machine‐learning methods to develop a computerized model for predicting pedestrian traffic flow levels, with the objective of enriching the OpenStreetMap database. This article presents prediction results by implementing six machine‐learning algorithms based on parameters relating to the geometrical and topological configuration of streets in OpenStreetMap, as well as points‐of‐interest such as public transportation and shops. The Random Forest algorithm produced the best results, whereby 95% of the testing data were successfully predicted. These results indicate that machine‐learning algorithms can accurately generate necessary temporal data, which when combined with the available crowdsourced open mapping data could augment the reliability of route planning algorithms for blind pedestrians. Learning-based methods, therefore, are preferred to be used on such raw imagery. In this article, in order to avoid difficulties in feature extraction, a novel multitask extension of the widely used sparse-representation-classification (SRC) method is proposed in both single and multiview set-ups. That is, the test sample could be a single IR image or images from different views. In both single-view and multiview scenarios, we try to employ collaborative spike and slab priors. This is because the traditional sparsity-inducing measures such as the l0 -row pseudonorm makes it hard to capture the sparse structure of the coefficient matrix when expanded in terms of a training dictionary, and the priors are proved to be able to capture fairly general sparse structures. Furthermore, a joint prior and sparse coefficient estimation method (JPCEM) is proposed for the first time in this article in order to alleviate the need to handpick prior parameters required before classification. Multiple experiments are conducted on a synthetic Comanche Forward Looking IR (FLIR) Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) database collected by Army Research Lab and a challenging mid-wave IR (MWIR) image ATR database made available by the U.S. Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate. The final results substantiate the merits of the proposed JPCEM through comparisons with other state-of-the-art methods, including both the ones based on SRC and the ones constructed using deep learning frameworks. Many VGI projects lack standard geospatial data quality assurance procedures, and the reliability of contributors remains in question. Traditional approaches rely on comparing VGI to an “authoritative” or “gold standard” dataset to assess quality. This study investigates VGI quality by analysing the OpenStreetMap (OSM) database in Ottawa‐Gatineau, focusing on historical map features and contributor data to gain an understanding of how users are contributing to the database, and their ability to do so accurately. Unsupervised machine learning analyses expose a cluster of experienced contributors classified as “OSM validators/experts”, which are then further used to attribute data quality. They are identified through a combination of strong contribution loadings associated with the use and experience of advanced OSM editors, and weaker loadings associated with feature creation and frequency of contributions leading to further correction. Species classification at the individual tree level requires fine-scale traits which can be derived through terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) point clouds. A generalizable species classification framework also needs to decouple seasonal foliage variation from deciduous species, for which wood filtering is applicable. Different machine learning and deep learning models are feasible for wood filtering and species classification. We investigated 13 machine learning and deep learning classifiers for 9 species, and 15 classifiers for filtering wood points from TLS plot scans. Each classifier was evaluated using the criteria of mean Intersection over Union accuracy (mIoU), training stability and time cost. On average, deep learning classifiers outperformed machine learning classifiers by 10% and 5% in terms of wood and species classification mIoU, respectively. PointNet++ provided the best species classifier, with the highest mIoU (0.906), stability, and moderate time cost. Among wood classifiers, UNet achieved the top mIoU (0.839) while ResNet-50 was recommended for rapid trial and error testing. Across the classifications, the factors of input resolution, attributes and features were also analyzed. Hot zones of species classification with PointNet++ were visualized to indicate how AI interpret species traits.
