[Termes IGN] World Geodetic System 1984Résumé : (Auteur) The WGS84 ellipsoid is tessellated using quadrilaterals of roughly the same size. This tiling is of general interest to global geographical information systems, but it has special relevance to global digital elevation models based on block averages. The simple relation between the tiling presented and the latitude/longitude reference system makes the tiling easy to implement, and the quadrilateral property of the cells offers regular subdivision like quadtrees. An error analysis gives a strict bound on the difference between cell averages calculated in plane and ellipsoidal coordinates. The mathematical results from this investigation are general and can be applied in error analysis related to other types of quadrilateral meshes. The grid can be easily subdivided into quadtree blocks. The error estimate makes it possible to combine the quadtree structure with standard two-dimensional wavelet representations. A new method is then presented, which is providing elements for this vicarious calibration, starting from sun-photometer ground measurements of sky radiances and degree of polarisation, and based on a neural network approach for the inversion of these measurements in terms of aerosol optical properties. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) It is common for modern geospatial libraries to contain multiple datasets that cover the same area but differ only in some specific quality attributes (e.g., resolution and precision). This is affecting the concept of content-based geospatial queries, as simple coverage-based query mechanisms (e.g., declaring a specific area of interest) as well as theme-based query mechanisms (e.g., requesting a black and white aerial photo or multispectral satellite imagery) are rendered inadequate to identify and access specific datasets in such collections. In this paper we introduce a novel approach to handle data quality attributes in geospatial queries. Our approach is characterized by the ability to model and learn user preferences, thus establishing user profiles that allow us to customize image queries for improving their functionality in a constantly diversifying geospatial user community. High spatial resolution airborne Digital Multispectral Videography (Dmsv) data provided subpixel information for Landsat TM data. The SPLIT model employed a Modularized Artificial Neural Network (MANN) to integrate multi-sensor remote sensing data and to extract proportions of impervious surfaces and other types of land cover within TM pixels. Through a control unit, the MANN was able to decompose a complex task into multiple subtasks by using a group of sub-networks. The SPLIT model identified spectral relations between TM pixel values and the corresponding DMSV subpixel patterns. The established relationship allows extrapolation of the SPLIT model to the areas beyond DMSV data coverage. We applied five intervals, i.e., 81 percent, to map the subpixel proportions of land cover types. We extrapolated the SPLIT model from training sites that have both TM and DMSV coverage into the entire DuPage County with TM data as the input. The extrapolation received 82.9 percent overall accuracyfor the extracted proportions of urban impervious surface. While remotely sensed imagery affords the opportunity to provide information on land-cover change over large geographic expanses at a relatively low cost, the characteristics of land-surface change bring into question the suitability of many commonly used methodologies. Algorithm-based methodologies to detect change generally cannot provide the same level of accuracy as the analyses done by human interpreters. Results from the Land Cover Trends project, a cooperative venture that includes the U.S. Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration, have shown that land-cover conversion is a relatively rare event, occurs locally in small patches, varies geographically and temporally, and is spectrally ambiguous. Based on these characteristics of change and the type of information required, manual interpretation was selected as the primary means of detecting change in the Land Cover Trends project. Mixtures of algorithm-based detection and manual interpretation may often prove to be the most feasible and appropriate design for change-detection applications. Serious examination of the expected characteristics and measurability of change must be considered during the design and implementation phase of any change analysis project.
