[Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (auteur) The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used to delineate potential water suppliers west of the Arabian Peninsula. Time series NDVI data extracted from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer NDVI product were used to develop a robust estimate of rainstorm frequency and intensity. A total of 216 NDVI images were acquired between February 2000 and January 2018 to carry out this investigation. As NDVI values of negative records correspond to water, it was possible to address and delineate the occurrence and duration of temporal ponded water. Results showed that at least 7 locations are potential to harvest water from flashfloods. Some locations witnessed 10, 11 and 13 rainstorms and ponding of water ranged from 1 to 20 months. These locations, if properly managed, could sustain a fresh water resource for local uses. The study demonstrates that NDVI time series curves could help identify the time/duration of previous rainstorms. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) As early as the fourth century BCE, the Nabateans established the Incense Road to facilitate the transport of aromatic substances (frankincense and myrrh) from the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean basin. An important part of this road was the segment between Petra and Gaza. Although studied before, the accurate route of parts of this segment is still vague since evidence of Roman milestones are scarce and significant portions of the landscape have changed dramatically in modern times, essentially wiping out the tracks of ancient roads. In this study, we use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Least Cost Path (LCP) analyses for reconstructing the original path of the Incense Road as well as verifying the factors influencing its establishment. The implemented analyses support the archeological evidence of two travel phases between Petra and Oboda (Avdat): During the first phase the Nabateans used the Darb es-Sultan route; during the second phase, from the first century BCE onwards, they passed through the Ramon Crater. This is the first time such reconstruction is made in the southern Levant. It was found that slope degree and the distance to water resources are dominant factors in reconstructing the accurate path of the Incense Road. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Deformation of the Earth's surface associated with redistributions of continental water mass explains, to first order, the seasonal signals observed in geodetic position time series. Discriminating these seasonal signals from other sources of deformation in geodetic measurements is essential to isolate tectonic signals and to monitor spatio‐temporal variations in continental water storage. We propose a new methodology to identify and extract these seasonal signals. The approach uses a variational Bayesian Independent Component Analysis (vbICA) to extract the seasonal signals and a gravity‐based deformation model to identify which of these signals are caused by surface loading. We test the procedure on two study areas, the Arabian Peninsula and the Nepal Himalaya, and find that the technique successfully extracts the seasonal signals with one or two independent components, depending on whether the load is stationary or moving. The approach is robust to spatial heterogeneities inherent to geodetic measurements and can help extract systematic errors in geodetic products (e.g., draconitic errors). We also discuss how to handle the degree‐1 deformation field present in the geodetic data set but not captured by the gravity‐based model. [Termes IGN] turbidité océaniqueRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents a comprehensive assessment of the performance of the commonly used atmospheric correction models (NIR, SWIR, NIR-SWIR and FM) and ocean color products (OC3 and OC2) derived from MODIS images over the Arabian Gulf, Sea of Oman, and Arabian Sea. The considered atmospheric correction models have been used to derive MODIS normalized water-leaving radiances (nLw), which are compared to in situ water nLw(λ) data collected at different locations by Masdar Institute, United Arab of Emirates, and from AERONET-OC (the ocean color component of the Aerosol Robotic Network) database. From this comparison, the NIR model has been found to be the best performing model among the considered atmospheric correction models, which in turn shows disparity, especially at short wavelengths (400–500 nm) under high aerosol optical depth conditions (AOT (869) > 0.3) and over turbid waters. To reduce the error induced by these factors, a modified model taking into consideration the atmospheric and water turbidity conditions has been proposed. A turbidity index was used to identify the turbid water and a threshold of AOT (869) = 0.3 was used to identify the dusty atmosphere. Despite improved results in the MODIS nLw(λ) using the proposed approach, Chl-a models (OC3 and OC2) show low performance when compared to the in situ Chl-a measurements collected during several field campaigns organized by local, regional and international organizations. This discrepancy might be caused by the improper parametrization of these models or/and the improper selection of bands. Thus, an adaptive power fit algorithm (R2 = 0.95) has been proposed to improve the estimation of Chl-a concentration from 0.07 to 10 mg/m3 by using a new blue/red MODIS band ratio of (443,488)/645 instead of the default band ratio used for OC3(443,488)/547. The selection of this new band ratio (443,488)/645 has been based on using band 645 nm which has been found to represent both water turbidity and algal absorption.
