[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Urban trees are valuable in, inter alia, ameliorating air pollution and mitigating the effects associated with urban heat islands. The dearth of tree cover maps is a major challenge for urban planners in the management of urban trees. This work adopts remote sensing approaches to provide urban tree cover maps which can strengthen urban landscape management. Whereas traditional pixel-based classification approaches have been commonly used in image classification, they are not well-suited for urban tree mapping due to their failure to fully explore the image’s spatial and spectral characteristics. Object-based classification techniques produce improved accuracies using additional variables. This study depicts the capability of object-based image analysis (OBIA) in mapping common urban trees using very high-resolution (VHR) WorldView-2 (WV-2) imagery. The study tests the utility of WV-2 bands and other feature variables in the object-based mapping of common urban trees and other land cover classes. Furthermore, the study compares the utility of Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) in the object-based mapping of common urban trees and other land cover classes. The results show that the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), NIR 1 and NIR 2 bands were important in the classification of common urban trees and other land cover classes. The RF classifier performed better than SVM, with an overall accuracy of 91.9% as compared to 87.3% for SVM. The results of this study offer insight to urban authorities with knowledge on the segmentation parameters, classification methods and feature variables for mapping urban trees, valuable in urban tree management. [Termes IGN] TasmanieRésumé : (auteur) Digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) has emerged as a potentially cost-effective alternative to airborne laser scanning (ALS) for forest inventory methods that employ point cloud data. Forest inventory derived from DAP using area-based methods has been shown to achieve accuracy similar to that of ALS data. At the tree level, individual tree detection (ITD) algorithms have been developed to detect and/or delineate individual trees either from ALS point cloud data or from ALS- or DAP-based canopy height models. An examination of the application of ITDs to DAP-based point clouds has not yet been reported. In this research, we evaluate the suitability of DAP-based point clouds for individual tree detection in the Pinus radiata plantation. Two ITD algorithms designed to work with point cloud data are applied to dense point clouds generated from small- and medium-format photography and to an ALS point cloud. Performance of the two ITD algorithms, the influence of stand structure on tree detection rates, and the relationship between tree detection rates and canopy structural metrics are investigated. Overall, we show that there is a good agreement between ALS- and DAP-based ITD results (proportion of false negatives for ALS, SFP, and MFP was always lower than 29.6%, 25.3%, and 28.6%, respectively, whereas, the proportion of false positives for ALS, SFP, and MFP was always lower than 39.4%, 30.7%, and 33.7%, respectively). Differences between small- and medium-format DAP results were minor (for SFP and MFP, differences between recall, precision, and F-score were always less than 0.08, 0.03, and 0.05, respectively), suggesting that DAP point cloud data is robust for ITD. Our results show that among all the canopy structural metrics, the number of trees per hectare has the greatest influence on the tree detection rates. [Termes IGN] plantation forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Tree-crown and height are primary tree measurements in forest inventory. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are a class of neural networks, which can be used in forest inventory; however, no prior studies have developed a CNN model to detect tree crown and height simultaneously. This study is the first-of-its-kind that explored training a mask region-based convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN) for automatically and concurrently detecting discontinuous tree crown and height of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb) Hook) in a plantation. A DJI Phantom4-Multispectral Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was used to obtain high-resolution images of the study site, Shunchang County, China. Tree crown and height of Chinese fir was manually delineated and derived from this UAV imagery. A portion of the ground-truthed tree height values were used as a test set, and the remaining measurements were used as the model training data. Six different band combinations and derivations of the UAV imagery were used to detect tree crown and height, respectively (Multi band-DSM, RGB-DSM, NDVI-DSM, Multi band-CHM, RGB-CHM, and NDVI-CHM combination). The Mask R-CNN model with the NDVI-CHM combination achieved superior performance. The accuracy of Chinese fir’s individual tree-crown detection was considerable (F1 score = 84.68%), the Intersection over Union (IoU) of tree crown delineation was 91.27%, and tree height estimates were highly correlated with the height from UAV imagery (R2 = 0.97, RMSE = 0.11 m, rRMSE = 4.35%) and field measurement (R2 = 0.87, RMSE = 0.24 m, rRMSE = 9.67%). Results demonstrate that the input image with an CHM achieves higher accuracy of tree crown delineation and tree height assessment compared to an image with a DSM. The accuracy and efficiency of Mask R-CNN has a great potential to assist the application of remote sensing in forests. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) We compiled data from several independent, long-term silvicultural studies on USDA Forest Service experimental forests across a latitudinal gradient in the northeastern and north-central U.S.A. to evaluate factors influencing aboveground live-tree carbon sequestration and mortality. Data represent five sites with more than 70,000 repeated tree records spanning eight decades, five ecoregions, and a range of stand conditions. We used these data to test the relative influence of factors such as climate, treatment history (uneven-aged or no management), species composition, and stand structural conditions on aboveground live-tree carbon sequestration and mortality in repeatedly measured trees. Relative to no management, we found that uneven-aged management tended to have a positive effect on carbon sequestration at low stocking levels and in areas of favorable climate (expressed as a combination of growing season precipitation and annual growing degree days > 5 °C). In addition, losses of carbon from the aboveground live-tree pool due to tree mortality were lower in managed than unmanaged stands. These findings suggest that there may be conditions at which rate of sequestration in living trees is higher in stands managed with uneven-aged silviculture than in unmanaged stands, and that this benefit is greatest where climate is favorable. The diseased pines are often first characterized by deteriorated crowns and they will eventually be killed by the infection, but the process is gradual and difficult to be observed before the symptoms are severe. We tested the applicability of point cloud data produced by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for quantifying the structural differences between the healthy and the diseased trees. This approach was applied in a mature pine stand in southern Finland, which was known to be infected by H. annosum. We first scanned the stand using TLS, and thereafter felled the trees for detailed inspection and classification of the infection status. From the TLS point cloud, we estimated i) crosscut areas within the lowest 1 m of the stem, identifying potential deformations initiated by the fungus, ii) degree of crown deterioration, often providing the first visual signs of the infection at the level of individual trees, and iii) crown occupancy and open space around the trees, prone to be altered by the mycelial spread of the fungus between the adjacent trees. The results indicate that differences in both stem dimensions and crown deterioration can be detected between the healthy and the diseased trees. The diseased trees were found to have a more swollen butt, but no irregularities in circularity of the crosscuts were detected. In terms of vertical point distribution, the diseased trees had point accumulations at substantially greater heights, reflecting easier penetration of laser beams and sparsity of the crown. Regarding to crown occupancy, the diseased trees had more open space around their crowns, but difference to the healthy trees was not statistically significant. According to a simple prediction test based on the calculated features, up to 85% classification accuracy of the infection status was reached. This study is the first indication that TLS can successfully be applied for detecting structural changes of Scots pines connected to Heterobasidion root rot. Our results also show evidence that H. annosum causes butt swelling, which has rarely been reported as a symptom for Scots pines.
