[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Moving from a forest standing tree volume assessment to a biomass assessment requires knowledge of the basic density of wood which, beyond average values by species or group of species, varies greatly within and between species, environmental conditions, and the structural and management properties of the stands. Based on breakthrough innovation, the XyloDensMap project has enabled the high throughput measurement of the wood basic density of more than one hundred and ten thousand drill cores taken during four successive campaigns of the National Forest Inventory. Here we present the first results of the basic wood density of the Mediterranean forest tree species which lead to an upward estimate of 12% of the above-ground biomass of these forests. We conclude by underlining the need for additional samples for species that are poorly represented and when management issues for biomass are raised at local scales such as that of stands. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: In recent decades, there has been a decline in growth in a rear-edge broadleaf forest of Fagus sylvatica , Quercus petraea , and Quercus pyrenaica . Although temperatures have been rising due to climate change, the observed decline in growth was mainly attributed to increased density and competition between trees since the cessation of traditional uses such as logging in the 1960s.
Context: In recent decades, two major factors have influenced tree growth in many forests: climate warming, which is associated with aridification and negative growth trends in many Mediterranean forests, and abandonment of forest management, resulting from forest policy in conjunction with rural depopulation in Europe, often leading to an increase in competition and a decrease in growth.
Aims: Here, we study the growth trends in a mixed forest of Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, and Quercus pyrenaica, where the abandonment of traditional uses in the 1960s has been followed by an increase in tree density. In this forest, both F. sylvatica and Q. petraea reach their south-westernmost limits of distribution.
Methods: Using dendrochronological methods and growth modeling, we assess the importance of climate warming on the shifts in competitive growth advantage of these three coexisting tree species and the relative importance of climate and competition on growth trends.
Results: Q. petraea and especially F. sylvatica showed a favorable evolution of their competitive capacity, despite the increase in temperatures that has occurred in the area in recent decades. F. sylvatica presented the lowest sensitivity to climate.

We showed that fire-related traits of some pine species are strongly related to other factors than fire but the recent fire history has nonetheless an impact on the variation of key traits for different fire adaptive strategies.
Context: In fire-prone Mediterranean areas, climate change is expected to exacerbate the fire pressure on ecosystems, altering the current fire regime and threatening species if they cannot acclimate.
Aims: Studying intraspecific variations of some fire-related traits in relation to variation in recent fire activity is thus an important step to better understand if this acclimation is possible.
Methods: We measured structural (bark thickness, shoot bulk density, self-pruning, leaf surface to volume ratio) and functional (serotiny level for Pinus halepensis only) traits in two pines species (Pinus halepensis and Pinus sylvestris) commonly found in southeastern France and that present different fire-adaptive strategies (resilience vs resistance, respectively). Populations were sampled according to different fire frequency modalities (0 vs 1 to 2 fires) along a geographical gradient, measuring numerous environmental and plant characteristics to be used cofactors in the analyses.
Results: As expected, trait variation was strongly linked to environmental and tree characteristics as well as to ontogeny overriding the effect of fire modalities, even though using integrative models with random effect. However, fire modalities had an impact on the variance of some key fire-related traits of Pinus halepensis.

[Termes IGN] NépalRésumé : (auteur) The potential of the improved resolution Sentinel-2 MSI data was explored through texture metrics, vegetation indices (VIs) and pooled dataset using the Random Forest (RF) machine learning algorithm to estimate Above-ground Biomass (AGB) in a sub-tropical forest of Nepal. Texture metrics were derived based on different working window sizes (3 × 3, 5 × 5, 7 × 7 and 9 × 9), and the results were compared with those obtained, using raw traditional bands (Analysis set 1: 2, 3, 4, 8, 11 and 12), raw traditional and red edge bands (Analysis set 2: Set 1 + Band 5, 6, 7 and 8A), and red edge bands (Analysis set 3) only. Comparatively, the use of pooled data (texture and VIs) yielded higher biomass estimates. The results from pooled data based on the 7 × 7 window size resulted in models with better model fitting parameters. For instance, pooled data produced an R2 = 0.99 and a RMSE = 4.51 t ha−1 (relRMSE = 2.82). Further, the RF model selected dissimilarity, variance and mean from Band 2 and SAVI (Soil adjusted vegetation index) as the most important AGB predictor variables. The results demonstrated that like the red-edge bands, traditional bands were equally important in AGB estimation. [Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) The Bidirectional polarization distribution function (BPDF) of land surfaces is important for studies of land surfaces and aerosol. With the availability of a huge number of polarization measurements, several semi-empirical BPDF models have been proposed. However, these models do not pay much attention to canopy structure, which is fundamental for generation of polarization. In this article, we propose a new BPDF model using canopy structure information, which is parameterized by visible-sunlit areas. It is evaluated over grassland using POLDER BPDF and MODIS leaf area index data sets. Experiments suggest that compared to Nadal–Bréon and Litvinov models, the new BPDF model reduces root-mean-square error by 7% and 10%, respectively. The new BPDF model also provides better performance when it is fitted using observations clustered by sun zenith angle. The new BPDF model thus provides an effective tool for the study of land surface polarization.
