[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) We analysed DORIS data from Socorro Island (Mexico), providing weekly coordinates in ITRF2000 from 1900 to 2006. Careful analysis of this time-series shows horizontal and vertical movements related to recent activity of the Mt. Evermannn volcano. A deflation of the volcano between 1993 and 1996 (−94 mm yr−1 in the N23°W direction, directly pointing in the direction of the crater summit) is observed. We identify also a clear horizontal discontinuity of 81 mm and a significant change in velocity on 2002 October 3. We use a Mogi formalism to provide constraints from our geodetic results on the successive locations and size of the depletion and inflation sources. Our model is consistent with a deflation source for the period 1993–1996 located beneath Mt. Evermannn at a depth of about 6.2 km below sea level. However, our data constrain only the azimuth and dip angles of the source, which could be located elsewhere along the azimuth of the summit, depth and volume varying linearly with the distance. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (INSAR) is capable of measuring ground-surface deformation with centimeter-to-subcentimeter precision and spatial resolution of tens-of-meters over a relatively large region. With its global coverage and all-weather imaging capability, INSAR is an important technique for measuring ground-surface deformation of volcanoes over cloud-prone and rainy regions such as the Aleutian Islands, where only less than 5 percent of optical imagery is usable due to inclement weather conditions. The spatial distribution of surface deformation data, derived from INSAR images, enables the construction of detailed mechanical models to enhance the study of magmatic processes. This paper reviews the basics of INSAR for volcanic deformation mapping and the INSAR studies of ten Aleutian volcanoes associated with both eruptive and non-eruptive activity. These studies demonstrate that all-weather INSAR imaging can improve our understanding of how the Aleutian volcanoes work and enhance our capability to predict future eruptions and associated hazards. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Morphological changes on Sagar Island are occurring at an alarming rate due to both natural and anthropogenic activities. The eastern part of the island is rapidly eroding due to destabilization and growth of tidal flats in the Muriganga estuary and the gradual shifting of water current towards the island. Over the last four years (1996–1999), the rate of coastal erosion has been much higher (11.35 km2) than accretion (2.65 km2), compared with the conditions prior to 1996. Coastal places like Dublat, Basantpur, Gobindapur, Collectorganj, and Sumatinagar have become the critical zones of erosion. The shorelines along the eastern and south-western sides are receding. The extent of coverage of the paddy field, sandy beaches, and land vegetation has decreased from 1996 to 1999 by 15.7, 1.1, and 3.5 km2, respectively. An integrated database of the island was generated using spatial and non-spatial data collected through field survey, satellite images of IRS-1C LISS III, and topomaps. Spatial data include coastal geomorphological landforms, land-use and land cover, shoreline change, sandy beaches, coastal erosion sites, agricultural fields, aquaculture sites, and coastal riparian vegetations. Non-spatial data include the demography and evolution of the island. The main critical environmental issues of the island are: (1) degradation of mangrove forests and coastal erosion; (2) overpopulation and over-exploitation of living resources; and (3) destruction of seawalls. Further degradation may lead to extinction of a variety of species and scarcity of marine food unless properly managed and regulated.
