The combined effects of forest age and topographic position influence the biodiversity patterns of these unique habitats. Forest managers, conservationists, and researchers need to work together in order to maintain the species richness and composition of these habitats under environmental changes.
Context: Dolines are the most prominent geomorphological features in many karst landscapes that may provide important microhabitats for many species.
Aims: We aim to contribute to a better understanding of how forest age and topographic position influence the plant species richness and composition of vascular plants within doline habitats.
Methods: We studied the effects of forest age (four age classes: from 5- to 10-year-old stands to more than 90-year-old stands), topographic position (south-facing slope, bottom, and north-facing slope), and their interaction on the distribution of vascular plants and mean Ellenberg indicator values in dolines using detrended correspondence analysis and mixed-effects models. Diagnostic species for the forest age classes and topographic positions were also determined.
Results: Different groups of vascular plant species usually showed significant preferences for certain topographic positions and/or forest age classes in dolines. In general, the number of species in all studied groups of plants increased after a few years of canopy removal. The number of plant species in almost all groups was lowest in dolines covered with 40–45-year-old forests. The moist and nutrient-rich doline bottoms covered with 90–120-year-old forests harboured many climate change vulnerable plant species.

[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (auteur) Geographical studies of outdoor activities have increased in recent years with the rise in popularity of these activities worldwide, including in Japan. Volunteered geographic information (VGI) is a key tool for organizing outdoor activities as it offers a means to determine the locational information and names of places. To evaluate the quality of VGI, geospatial data generated by land survey agencies and other VGI are often utilized as reference data. However, since these reference data may not be available, other methods are necessary to assure the quality of VGI. In this study, we examined five trust indicators based on the inherent characteristics of VGI through an empirical case study. We used mountain names extracted from OpenStreetMap in Japan as data because there were almost no other VGI in the vicinity. As a result, we isolated three trust indicators, namely versions, users, and tag corrections, to examine the thematic accuracy of VGI because these were the only statistically significant indicators. However, we found that the prediction rate of thematic accuracy was very low. To improve thematic accuracy, this study recommends using the most accurate versions, applying correctly given tags, and considering the motivations and characteristics of the VGI contributors. [Termes IGN] teneur en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) In this study, a tropospheric delay model that integrates tropospheric delays derived from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts fifth-generation global atmospheric reanalysis and the Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) network observations in mountainous areas is established, which is then applied to improve GNSS precise point positioning (PPP). Observations of GNSS stations in the Great Dividing Range of eastern Australia are selected for the experiments. The performance of zenith wet delay (ZWD) retrieved from the integrated tropospheric model is evaluated with comparisons to precise point positioning (PPP) estimated ZWD values. Results show that the average root-mean-square value for ZWDs of the integrated tropospheric model is 8.03 mm for the eastern Australian CORS network, showing an improvement of 14.0% compared to that of the CORS interpolation model. Besides, the proposed tropospheric model is applied to regional augmentation precise positioning. Results present that the average positioning accuracy of the tropospheric model-corrected PPP solutions is 1.42 cm, 1.39 cm and 2.90 cm for the east, north and vertical components, respectively, revealing an improvement of 14.5%, 11.5% and 18.6% compared to the PPP solutions with regional CORS corrections. Meanwhile, almost all stations can achieve a faster solution convergence by performing the integrated tropospheric model-corrected PPP. All these results demonstrate the promising potential of the proposed tropospheric model in enhancing precise positioning as well as facilitating applications in the meteorological fields. The goal is to produce legible and informative maps even at small scales from a detailed dataset. The potential of deep learning to help in this task is still unknown. This article examines the use case of mountain road generalisation, to explore the potential of a specific deep learning approach: generative adversarial networks (GAN). Our goal is to generate images that depict road maps generalised at the 1:250k scale, from images that depict road maps of the same area using un-generalised 1:25k data. This paper not only shows the potential of deep learning to generate generalised mountain roads, but also analyses how the process of deep learning generalisation works, compares supervised and unsupervised learning and explores possible improvements. With this experiment we have exhibited an unsupervised model that is able to generate generalised maps evaluated as good as the reference and reviewed some possible improvements for deep learning-based generalisation, including training set management and the definition of a new road connectivity loss. All our results are evaluated visually using a four questions process and validated by a user test conducted on 113 individuals.
