[Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Coastline recession is one of the best indicators of coastal erosion. Three methods for computing coastline recession - the baseline approach, the dynamic segmentation approach and the area-based approach - have been used, each of which has one or more drawbacks. To overcome these problems, a new methodology for measuring coastline recession is proposed, using buffering and non-linear least squares estimation. The proposed method was compared with the three existing methods with respect to two simulated cases and two real coastlines. Test results confirmed that the new method is more reliable than the three other methods, all of which are susceptible to variability of recession, scale, number of line segments, length of coastlines and direction of the baseline. The proposed method, incorporating two physically meaningful values - magnitude and variability of coastline recession according to the mean and standard deviation of coastline offsets, respectively - presents itself as an effective alternative method of assessing coastline recession. [Termes IGN] stabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Dealing with the evaluation of the risk connected to the formation of landslide dams at regional scale, it is important to estimate the volume of the depleted material that can reach the riverbed. This information, combined with other elements (river dimensions, valley width, landslide velocity, etc.) allows making predictions on the possibility of river blockage. One of the problems of this approach is the lack of data concerning the shape and position of the sliding surface; this does not permit us to estimate the volume of the landslide material. The IFFI (Inventario dei Fenomeni Franosi in Italia, i.e. Landslide Inventory in Italy) project furnishes information, at different levels of precision, on nearly totality of the landslides existing in Italy. The first level of the IFFI (compiled for all slides) does not contain information on the depth of the sliding surface but contains data regarding the type and the activity of the slope movement. Along with this information the IFFI project also furnishes vector maps containing the boundary of each landslide and the main sliding direction. This paper describes the implementation of an algorithm aimed to define, with an adequate approximation, the 3D geometry of the sliding surface of rotational slides for which, on the basis of geologic maps available at regional scale, some geotechnical parameters can be known or estimated. The work also required the creation of a computer code useful for the 3D analysis of slope stability (3D safety factor) using the simplified Janbu method. All computer code has been created on a GNU-Linux OS and using shell scripting, based on GRASS GIS and R statistical software. [Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) Mudslides and debris flows are now more common problems in tropical regions than landslides. This article addresses the issue of modelling mudslide-susceptible locations using an information value approach. Landsat 7 (ETM+) was employed to create a land-use map with limited field checks. Other parameters considered were lineament, road, soil, stream network and lithology. Topographic parameters such as slope and aspect play a dominant role in slope stability studies. Maps for slope and aspects were developed from a digital elevation model using statistical surface interpolation techniques. This article offers insight into the importance of the selection of suitable surface interpolation techniques. The three surface interpolation techniques evaluated in the study were: inverse distance weighted, Kriging and Spline. These were found to have varied accuracies of interpolation surfaces for all parameters, including elevation, slope and aspect. Surfaces offering the best accuracy were adopted for the information value approach for mudslide susceptibility zonation. [Termes IGN] Pays de GallesRésumé : (Auteur) Modelling and extracting 3D geographical data presents numerous challenges that require continual research to attempt to evolve an efficient, reliable and accurate solution. LiDAR data capture and analysis has become a preferred acquisition choice for elevation data because the resulting quality and level of detail far exceeds traditional methods for large survey areas. As with any data collection system, LiDAR is prone to errors. Analysing these errors, ascertaining causes and producing error correction strategies is vital if accurate and confident results are to be obtained. Eight years of LiDAR datasets (from 1998 to 2005) have been closely analysed for a large coastal area of South Wales. This article provides a detailed and accurate summary of the identified LiDAR data issues and subsequent errors which affect the accuracy of end products such as Digital Surface Models (DSMs).
