[Termes IGN] station permanenteRésumé : (Editeur) [...] Looking on Wikipedia, we find the following traits necessary for successful collaboration : ”shared'"objectives; sense of urgency and commitment; dynamic process; sense of belonging; open communication; mutual trust and respect; complementarity diverse skills and knowledge; intellectual agility” These words fittingly describe the lnternational GNSS Service (IGS) and how it operates. The IGS was established in 1994 in order to provide the highest quality GNSS data and products in support of Earth science research multidisciplinary application and education. It was and is still the aim of the IGS advance scientific understanding of he Earth system components. And their interactions, as well as to facilitate other applications benefiting society. The IGS consists of over 200 actively contributing organizations in more than 80 countries and a global network of over 370 stations. In addition to providing GPS and, GLONASS raw measurements, the IGS contributes to the maintenance and improvement of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame, produces high accuracy GPS and GLONASS satellite orbit and clock data, and monitors the Earth's rotation and the state of its ionized and neutral atmospheres. Among other applications, IGS measurements and products help monitor the movement and flexure of the Earth's tectonic plates, assess sea-level variations, carry out precise time transfer, and determine accurate trajectories for low-Earth orbiting satellites. In this month's column, Angelyn Moore, the lGS Central Bureau's deputy director, overviews the organization's service, history, and future, demonstrating that the IGS is a model of scientific collaboration of which not just the GNSS community but the whole world should be proud. [Termes IGN] récepteur GPSRésumé : (Auteur) For the third time, the European Space Agency (ESA) held a workshop on satellite navigation user equipment technologies, Navitec 2006. The conference centre of Estec in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, was filled with scientists from all over Europe from Finland to Portugal. The eleventh to thirteenth of december, the conference filled the two Newton conference rooms with parallel sessions. The topic varied from receiver technologies and developments to carrier phase algorithms and indoor and urban navigation. The fourteenth of december there was a course on the Galileo system. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) We examine the contribution of the Doppler Orbit determination and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) technique to the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF2005) by evaluating the quality of the submitted solutions as well as that of the frame parameters, especially the origin and the scale. Unlike the previous versions of the ITRF, ITRF2005 is constructed with input data in the form of time-series of station positions (weekly for satellite techniques and daily for VLBI) and daily Earth orientation parameters (EOPs), including full variance–covariance information. Analysis of the DORIS station positions’ time-series indicates an internal precision reaching 15 mm or better, at a weekly sampling. A cumulative solution using 12 years of weekly time-series was obtained and compared to a similar International GNSS Service (IGS) GPS solution (at 37 co-located sites) yielding a weighted root mean scatter (WRMS) of the order of 8 mm in position (at the epoch of minimum variance) and about 2.5 mm/year in velocity. The quality of this cumulative solution resulting from the combination of two individual DORIS solutions is better than any individual solution. A quality assessment of polar motion embedded in the contributed DORIS solutions is performed by comparison with the results of other space-geodetic techniques and in particular GPS. The inferred WRMS of polar motion varies significantly from one DORIS solution to another and is between 0.5 and 2 mas, depending on the strategy used and in particular estimating or not polar motion rate by the analysis centers. This particular aspect certainly needs more investigation by the DORIS Analysis Centers.
