The objective of the EuroSDR Building Extraction comparison was to evaluate the quality, accuracy, feasibility and economical aspects of semi automatic building extraction based on photogrammetric techniques with the emphasis on commercial and/or operative systems, semi-automatic and automatic building extraction techniques based on high density laser scanner data and semi-automatic and automatic building extraction techniques based on integration of laser scanner data and aerial images. The project consists of three test sites by the Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI), namely Senaatti, Hermanni and Espoonlahti, and one test site by the Institut Geographique National (IGN), namely Amiens. For each test site following data was provided to the partners: aerial images, camera calibration and image orientation information, ground control point coordinates and jpg images of point locations (not for Amiens), laser scanner data and cadastral map vectors of selected buildings. Participants were requested to create vectors of 3D city models. 3D-models were obtained from 11 participants. The paper confirms with experiments that laser scanning is superior in deriving building heights, extracting planar roof faces and ridges of the roof, whereas photogrammetry and aerial images are superior in building outline and length determination. Building reconstruction strategies from traditional stereo images may highly be enhanced using such data together with. The aim of this paper is to propose an efficient algorithm for extracting 3D planar primitives from a laser survey over urban areas. It is based on a normal driven random sample consensus (ND-RANSAC) which consists of randomly selecting sets of three points within laser points sharing the same orientation of normal vectors. A robust plane is then estimated with laser points that are likely to belong to the real roof facet. The number of draws is managed automatically with a statistical analysis of the distribution of normal vectors within an approximation of the Gaussian sphere of the scene. Promising results are presented with laser data acquired over the city of Amiens, France. First investigations are accomplished in sports sciences as well. However, most geodetic GPS equipment is too large and too heavy for attaching it at the athletes body. Using the potential of miniaturized electronics, a special GPS receiver for ski jumping was developed. The hardware could be integrated completely into a common jumping helmet. Striving to an ideal measurement system with no influence on the athlete activities only little adverse effects remain on the athletes using the GPS-helmet. The topography of jumping hills results in a more or less shadowing of the GPS satellite signals. Not all jumping hills are applicable for GPS measurements. Measurement campaigns need to be well planned considering satellite constellation issues. Centimeter accuracy requires successful integer ambiguity fixing. Common algorithms assume uninterrupted signal reception over a sufficient long time. But the 10-20 seconds for an attempt, take-off, flight and landing are not long enough. Thus a laser light barrier array was developed. It determines position and time of the GPS-helmet during athletes take-off from the ramp. This information enables the ambiguity fixing and enhances accuracy and reliability of the solution, even for short GPS measurement segments. The system was successfully tested during some training sessions of german ski jumpers. It was shown which informations can be derived from positions and velocities for several phases of a jump. The conference was the fourteenth in the series of biennial conferences started in 1980. The name of the series re?ects the fact that the conferences are organized in the Nordic (Scandinavian) countries, following the cycle Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway. The event itself has always been international in its participants and presentations. Today there are many conferences in the ?elds related to SCIA. In this s- uation our goal is to keep up the reputation for the high quality and friendly environment of SCIA. We hope that participants feel that it’s worth attending the conference. Therefore, both the scienti?c and social program were designed to support the best features of a scienti?c meeting: to get new ideas for research and to have the possibility to exchange thoughts with fellow scientists. To ful?ll the above-mentioned goals, the conference was a single-track event. This meant that a higher percentage of the papers than in earlier SCIAs were presented as posters. We hope that this gave the participants better chances to follow the presentations that they were interested in. SCIA 2005 attracted a record number of submissions: 236 manuscripts. From these, 124 were accepted: 31 oral presentations and 93 poster presentations. This led to an acceptance rate of 53%. The program included also six plenary presentations and three tutorials. [Termes IGN] triangulation (topologie)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a general strategy for 3D reconstruction of complex architectural scenes. This approach makes use of both laser data (range and retro-diffusion) and image data, and of their great complementarity. The proposed approach starts with pose estimation between the two data sets. This part is largely automated by means of correlation of fine feature points and linear primitives. The second part deals with segmentation of the scene. Here, each element of the scene must be detected. This can be fulfilled in two ways. The first one is semi-automatic extraction of the objects where user interaction is used to initialize the object localisation, the second one is fully automatic segmentation, driven by image and 3D data. Then, each object needs to be reconstructed. We consider a large range of objects since we can describe planar surfaces, general geometric primitives and generalised cylinders. When these models do not fit with the surface, that is to say on complex parts, triangulation is performed. This leads to two potential reconstruction tools: one similar to laser data editing software, with more efficient object selection and object boundary estimation, the other would perform automatic reconstruction, which would be followed by a verification procedure. The advantage of this approach, compared to existing techniques, is to reduce dramatically reconstruction time, without having any hard limitation on the set of shapes that can be obtained.
