[Termes IGN] Pays de GallesRésumé : (Auteur) Modelling and extracting 3D geographical data presents numerous challenges that require continual research to attempt to evolve an efficient, reliable and accurate solution. LiDAR data capture and analysis has become a preferred acquisition choice for elevation data because the resulting quality and level of detail far exceeds traditional methods for large survey areas. As with any data collection system, LiDAR is prone to errors. Analysing these errors, ascertaining causes and producing error correction strategies is vital if accurate and confident results are to be obtained. Eight years of LiDAR datasets (from 1998 to 2005) have been closely analysed for a large coastal area of South Wales. This article provides a detailed and accurate summary of the identified LiDAR data issues and subsequent errors which affect the accuracy of end products such as Digital Surface Models (DSMs). [Termes IGN] XMLRésumé : (Auteur) Geotechnical data characterizes the geometry and physical properties of soil deposits, which are determined from field observations, in-situ and laboratory tests, and engineering analyses. Until now, geotechnical information was mainly described and exchanged as relational data, which occasionally included spatial characteristics. Hereafter, the spatial features of geotechnical data are investigated by invoking the geotechnical data model of the Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS), which is widely used in the United Kingdom to exchange geotechnical data in engineering practice. The basic geometric objects in AGS geotechnical data are first identified. These geometric objects are mapped to basic geometric features of the Geography Markup Language (GML). AGS data can therefore be fully rendered using GML-conformant schemas, which make geotechnical data readily importable into GML-aware applications. The data can be also imported to mainstream GIS applications using Extensible Markup Language (XML) transformations. This article demonstrates the rendition of AGS data format to a GML-conformant schema and illustrates the implementation of the new format through a few geotechnical examples. [Termes IGN] Royaume-UniRésumé : (Auteur) In this article, the development of digital photography in the UK from the 1980's onward are charted. It draws on the author's own experiences as someone who has been involved throughout this period. He states that in the last 20 years, digital aerial imagery has come a very long way, since it has developed from a niche product used by a few specialists to an information source with broad appeal to both professionals and consumers, that is quickly and cheaply accessible. In the short term and beyond, the prospects are very good, with a continuing role for those business innovators that have brought everyone this far.
