[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) The Himalayan terrain is an epitome of ongoing convergence and geodetic deformation where both tectonic and non-tectonic forces prevail. In this study, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and Global Positioning System (GPS) datasets are used to assess the impact of seasonal loading on deformation with seismicity in Nepal. The recorded GPS data from 21 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations during 2017–2020 are processed with respect to ITRF14 and the Indian reference frame, and the Center for Space Research (CSR) mascon RL06 during 2002–2020 is adopted to estimate the terrestrial water storage (TWS) change over the Ganga-Brahmaputra River basin. The results indicate that the hydrological loading effect or TWS change shows high negative, high positive, and moderately positive values in pre-monsoon, co-monsoon, and post-monsoon months, respectively. The detrended GPS data of both horizontal and vertical components correlate with the seasonal TWS change using the Pearson correlation coefficient at each GNSS site. In addition, the correlation coefficient has been interpolated using inverse distance weighting to investigate the regional TWS influence on geodetic displacement. In the north component, the correlation coefficient ranges from −0.6 to 0.6. At the same time, the TWS is positively correlated with geodetic displacement (0.82) in the east component, and the correlation coefficient is negative (−0.69) in the vertical component. The negative correlation signifies an inverse relationship between seasonal TWS variation and geodetic displacements. The strain rate is estimated, which shows higher negative values in pre-monsoon than in post-monsoon. Similarly, the effect of seismicity is 47.90% for pre-monsoon, 15.97% for co-monsoon, and 17.56% for post-monsoon. Thus we can infer that the seismicity decreases with the increase of seasonal hydrological loading. Furthermore, the effect of strain is much higher in pre-monsoon than in post-monsoon since the impact of co-monsoon continues to persist on a small scale in the post-monsoon season. [Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (auteur) Along-strike variation in the geometry of lithospheric structures is a key control parameter for the occurrence and propagation of major interplate earthquakes in subduction and collision zones. The lateral segmentation of the Himalayan arc is now well-established from various observations, including topography, gravity anomalies, exhumation rates, and present-day seismic activity. Good knowledge of the main geometric features of these segments and their boundaries is thus the next step to improve seismic hazard assessment in this area. Following recent studies, we focus our approach on the transition zone between Nepal and Bhutan where both M > 8 earthquakes and changes in the geometry of the Indian plate have been documented. Ground gravity data sets are combined with satellite gravity gradients provided by the GOCE mission (Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer) in a joint inversion to assess the location and the geometry of this transition. We obtain a ca. 10 km wide transition zone located at the western border of Bhutan that is aligned with the Madhupur fault in the foreland and coincides with the Dhubri–Chungthang fault zone and the Yadong-Gulu rift in Himalaya and southern Tibet, respectively. This sharp segment boundary at depth can act as a barrier to earthquake rupture propagation. It can possibly restrict the size of large earthquakes and thus reduce the occurrence probability of M > 9 earthquakes along the Main Himalayan Thrust. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) The April 25, 2015 Mw 7.9 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal was characterized by a peak slip of several meters and persisting aftershocks. We report here that, in addition, a dense seismic swarm initiated abruptly in August 2017 at the western edge of the afterslip region, below the high Himalchuli-Manaslu range culminating at 8156 m, a region seismically inactive during the past 35 years. Over 6500 events were recorded by the Nepal National Seismological Network with local magnitude ranging between 1.8 and 3.7 until November 2017. This swarm was reactivated between April and July 2018, with about 10 times less events than in 2017, and in 2019 with only sporadic events. The relocation of swarm earthquakes using proximal temporary stations ascertains a shallow depth of hypocenters between the surface and 20 km depth in the High Himalayan Crystalline slab. This swarm reveals an intriguing localized interplay between orogenic collapse and stress adjustments, involving possibly CO2-rich fluid migration, more likely post-seismic slip and seasonal enhancements. [Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (Auteur) After more than a decade of dispute and controversy, China and Nepal have finally agreed on the altitude of Mount Everest. The highest peak in the world, which lies on Nepal's border with Tibet in the Himalayas, stands at 8,848.86 meters, officials from the two countries announced on December 8, 2020. To relate this human and technique epic, open our columns to Gavin Schrock, consulting editor and land surveyor who interviewed several protagonists and to Khim Lal Gautam, leader of the Nepalese expedition in 2019. Bernard Flacelière, editor-in-chief of XYZ recalls here the forgotten mission of 1992. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (éditeur) Natural hazard events are able to significantly affect the natural and artificial environment. In this context, changes in landforms due to natural disasters have the potential to affect and, in some cases, even restrict human interaction with the ecosystem. In order to minimize fatalities and reduce the economic impact that accompanies their occurrence, proper planning is crucial. Land use planning can play an important role in reducing current and future risks related to natural hazards. Land use changes can lead to natural hazards and vice versa: natural hazards affect land uses. Therefore, planners may take into account areas that are susceptible to natural hazards when selecting favorable locations for land use development. Appropriate land use planning can lead to the determination of safe and non-safe areas for urban activities. This Special Issue focuses on land use planning for natural hazards. In this context, various types of natural hazards, such as land degradation and desertification, coastal hazard, floods, and landslides, as well as their interactions with human activities, are presented.
