The demand analysis of relief supplies is the premise and basis for efficient relief operations after disasters. With the widespread use of social media, it has become a vital channel for people to report their demand for relief supplies and provides a way to obtain information on disaster areas. Therefore, we present a topic model-based framework and establish a demand dictionary and a gazetteer that aims to identify the spatial distribution of the demand for relief supplies by using social media data. Taking the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan (also called Yolanda) as a case study, we identify the potential topics of tweets with the biterm topic model, screen the tweets related to demands, and obtain the demand and location information from tweets to study the distribution of the relief supplies needs. The results show that, based on the demand dictionary, a gazetteer and the biterm topic model, the effective demand for relief supplies can be extracted from tweets. The proposed framework is feasible for the identification of accurate demand information and its distribution. Further, this framework can be applied to other types of disaster responses and can facilitate relief operations. It seeks to highlight how the use of GIS analysis, applied to the study of informal settlements, can provide useful information to understand the smart city paradigm. The paper argues the key idea that a smart city should not be seen only as a high-tech urban environment because the transition to smartness will need major changes in its inner structure. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative GIS analysis methods, this study examines the case of the BaSECo Compound, one of the densest informal settlements in Metro Manila (Philippines), with the aim of both generating a comprehensive morphological analysis of this dynamic urban area as well as contributing to the configurational theory of the smart city. The results suggest that the analysis of autopoietic urban systems could expand our understanding of how the structure of the city could evolve to accommodate the needs of its citizens and creating more resilient and inclusive communities. [Termes IGN] séquence d'imagesRésumé : (auteur) In 2019, four strong earthquakes of Mw>6.4 occurred successively in Mindanao, Philippines. Based on the reports from the USGS and PHIVOLCS, these earthquakes were dominated by strike-slip ruptures. Whether these earthquakes are temporally and spatially related remained unknown. We characterized the coseismic displacement fields during the earthquake sequence using an InSAR technique with Sentinel-1 SAR data. The InSAR deformation measurements convincingly reveal that the four earthquakes produced distinct coseismic displacement patterns. We estimated the source parameters of the earthquakes with a two-step inversion strategy. The optimal model suggests that the earthquake sequence resulted from the reactivation of a conjugate fault structure that involves two nearly vertical left-lateral strike-slip faults and two high-angle right-lateral strike-slip faults. We calculated Coulomb stress changes from the earthquake sequence, suggesting that the previous strong earthquakes had significant stress-encouraging effects on the following events. The regional velocities based on the GPS analysis suggest that the formation of this conjugate structure is mainly due to the westward movement of the subducting Philippine Sea Plate. This earthquake sequence provides a seismotectonic background for subsequent strong earthquakes and helps to better understand the formation mechanisms and seismotectonic implications of conjugate structure rupturing. [Termes IGN] surveillance du littoralRésumé : (auteur) Advancement in Remote Sensing allows rapid mangrove mapping without the need for data-intensive methodologies, complex classifiers, and skill-dependent classification techniques. This study proposes a new index, the Mangrove Vegetation Index (MVI), to rapidly and accurately map mangroves extent from remotely-sensed imageries. The MVI utilizes three Sentinel-2 bands green, Near Infrared (NIR) and Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) in the form |NIR-Green|/|SWIR-Green| to discriminate the distinct greenness and moisture of mangroves from terrestrial vegetation and other land cover. Spectral band analysis shows that the |NIR-Green| part of MVI captures the differences of greenness between mangrove forests and terrestrial vegetation. The |SWIR-Green| part of the index expresses the distinct moisture of mangroves without the need for additional intertidal data and water indices. The MVI value increases with the increasing probability of a pixel being classified as mangroves. Eleven mangrove forests in the Philippines and one mangrove park in Japan were then mapped using MVI. Accuracy assessment was done using field inventory data and high-resolution drone orthophotos. MVI have successfully separated the mangroves from other cover especially terrestrial vegetation, with an overall index accuracy of 92%. The MVI was applied to Landsat 8 images using the equivalent bands to test the universality of the index. Comparable MVI mangrove maps were produced between Sentinel-2 and Landsat images, with an optimal minimum threshold of 4.5 and 4.6, respectively. MVI can effectively highlight the greenness and moisture information in mangroves as reflected by its moderate to high correlation value (r = 0.63 and 0.84, α = 0.05) with the Sentinel-derived chlorophyll-a (Ca) and canopy water (Cw) biophysical products. This study developed and implemented two automated platforms: an offline IDL-based ‘MVI Mapper’ and an online Google Earth Engine-based MVI mapping interface. The MVI implemented in Google Earth Engine was used in generating the latest mangrove extent map of the Philippines. Additionally, the application of MVI were tested to four additional mangrove forests in Southeast Asia: Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia; and to selected mangroves forests in South America, Africa and Australia. [Termes IGN] variable biophysique (végétation)Résumé : (Auteur) The recent launch of the Sentinel-1 (SAR) and Sentinel-2 (multispectral) missions offers a new opportunity for land-based biomass mapping and monitoring especially in the tropics where deforestation is highest. Yet, unlike in agriculture and inland land uses, the use of Sentinel imagery has not been evaluated for biomass retrieval in mangrove forest and the non-forest land uses that replaced mangroves. In this study, we evaluated the ability of Sentinel imagery for the retrieval and predictive mapping of above-ground biomass of mangroves and their replacement land uses. We used Sentinel SAR and multispectral imagery to develop biomass prediction models through the conventional linear regression and novel Machine Learning algorithms. We developed models each from SAR raw polarisation backscatter data, multispectral bands, vegetation indices, and canopy biophysical variables. The results show that the model based on biophysical variable Leaf Area Index (LAI) derived from Sentinel-2 was more accurate in predicting the overall above-ground biomass. In contrast, the model which utilised optical bands had the lowest accuracy. However, the SAR-based model was more accurate in predicting the biomass in the usually deficient to low vegetation cover non-forest replacement land uses such as abandoned aquaculture pond, cleared mangrove and abandoned salt pond. These models had 0.82–0.83 correlation/agreement of observed and predicted value, and root mean square error of 27.8–28.5 Mg ha−1. Among the Sentinel-2 multispectral bands, the red and red edge bands (bands 4, 5 and 7), combined with elevation data, were the best variable set combination for biomass prediction. The red edge-based Inverted Red-Edge Chlorophyll Index had the highest prediction accuracy among the vegetation indices. Overall, Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery can provide satisfactory results in the retrieval and predictive mapping of the above-ground biomass of mangroves and the replacement non-forest land uses, especially with the inclusion of elevation data. The study demonstrates encouraging results in biomass mapping of mangroves and other coastal land uses in the tropics using the freely accessible and relatively high-resolution Sentinel imagery.
