[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an improved classification and mapping of vegetation types for all of Japan by utilizing the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance (MCD43A4 product) data were compared to the conventional Surface Reflectance (MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products) data for the classification of vegetation types: evergreen coniferous forest, evergreen broadleaf forest, deciduous coniferous forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, shrubs, herbaceous, arable; and non-vegetation. Very rich spectral and temporal features were prepared from MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. Random Forests classifier was employed for the classification of vegetation types with the support of ground truth data prepared in the research. Accuracy metrics—confusion matrix, overall accuracy, and kappa coefficient calculated through 10-fold cross-validation approach—were used for quantitative comparison of MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. The cross-validation results indicated better performance of the MCD43A4 (Overall accuracy = 0.73; Kappa coefficient = 0.69) product than conventional MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products (Overall accuracy = 0.70; Kappa coefficient = 0.66) for the classification. McNemar’s test was also used to confirm a significant difference (p-value = 0.0003) between MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. Based on these results, by utilizing the MCD43A4 features, a new vegetation map was produced for all of Japan. The newly produced map showed better accuracy than the extant, MODIS Land Cover Type product (MCD12Q1) and Global Land Cover by National Mapping Organizations (GLCNMO) product in Japan.

[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Dot maps are effective for cartographic visualization of categorical data. Recent advances in Web mapping technology have facilitated the development of interactive dot maps, in which users can pan and zoom to view data distributions for different areas. This interactivity, however, introduces multiple cartographic challenges, as design decisions that are appropriate at large scales can lead to clutter and illegibility at small scales. This article considers these challenges in the context of an applied example – an interactive dot map of educational attainment in the United States. It covers the methodology of the map’s creation as well as how it addresses the cartographic challenges of interactive dot mapping. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) In this article, we use eye-tracking methods to analyze the differences in spatial ability between geographers and non-geographers regarding topographic maps, as reflected in the following three aspects: map-based spatial localization, map-based spatial orientation, and map-based spatial visualization. We recruited 32 students from Beijing Normal University (BNU) and divided them into groups of geographers and non-geographers based on their major. In terms of their spatial localization ability, geographers had shorter response times, higher fixation frequencies, and fewer saccades than non-geographers, and the differences were significant. For their spatial orientation ability, compared to non-geographers, geographers had significantly lower response times, lower fixation counts and fewer saccades as well as significantly higher fixation frequencies. In terms of their spatial visualization ability, geographers’ response times were significantly shorter than those of non-geographers, but there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of fixation count, fixation frequency or saccade count. We also found that compared to geographers, non-geographers usually spent more time completing these tasks. The results of this study are helpful in improving the map-based spatial ability of users of topographic maps.
