[Termes IGN] recherche d'image basée sur le contenuRésumé : (auteur) In recent years, libraries have made great progress in digitising troves of historical maps with high-resolution scanners. Providing user-friendly information access for cultural heritage through spatial search and webGIS requires georeferencing of the hundreds of thousands of digitised maps. Georeferencing is usually done manually by finding “ground control points”, locations in the digital map image, whose identity is unambiguous and can easily be found in modern-day reference geodata/mapping data. To decide whether two symbols from different maps describe the same object, their semantic and spatial relations need to be matched. Automating this process is the only feasible way to georeference the immense quantities of maps in conceivable time. However, automated solutions for spatial matching quickly fail when faced with incomplete data – which is the greatest challenge when comparing maps of different ages or scales. These problems can be overcome by computing map similarity in the image domain. Treating maps as a special case of image processing allows efficient and robust matching and thus identification of geographical regions without the need to explicitly model semantics. We propose a method to encode worldwide reference VGI mapping data as image features, allowing the construction of an efficient lookup index. With this index, content-based image retrieval can be used for both geolocating a given map for georeferencing with high accuracy. We demonstrate our approach on hundreds of map sheets of different historical topographical survey map series, successfully georeferencing most of them within mere seconds. [Termes IGN] translationRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a framework for translating a land-cover map into another one in a supervised way. This links to numerous applications (updating, completion, etc.). Conversely to existing approaches, we jointly perform spatial and semantic transformation without any prior knowledge. The proposed method assumes that: i) examples of the source and target maps already exist, ii) the spatial resolution of the source map is equal or higher than the target one. The translation is performed using an asymmetric Convolutional Neural Network with positional encoding. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the method in retrieving a yearly version of Corine Land Cover (CLC) at country-scale (France) using an existing high-resolution map and with similar accuracy than existing CLC maps (~80%). [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Cartography has undergone great changes in the last 40 years. Many web platforms and location-based services are offering increasing opportunities, paper maps have been largely supplemented by multimedia and digital maps, and spatial databases. The definition of a map has changed throughout history and the differences in their definitions are presented. This paper aims for new central cartographic definitions, corresponding to contemporary cartographic development after presenting the current situation of the topic. Definitions of cartographic mapping, cartography and cartographer are proposed, as well as a new definition of the map. All they are made on the base of logical analyses including different types of maps from traditional and real to virtual, 3D, animation, and digital. First, the most common spatio-temporal metrics were compiled and implemented within a software tool, IndiFrag. Then, we present a methodology based on spatio-temporal metrics and propose a new index that quantifies the inequality of growth between population and built-up areas to analyze and compare urban growth patterns at different levels. This allowed for a differentiation of growing patterns, besides, the analysis at various levels contributed to a better understanding of such patterns. Second, we quantified the two-way relationship between the urban structure in cities and their socio-economic status by means of spatial metrics issued from a local climate zone map for 31 cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Based on these data, we quantified their relationship with socio-economic indicators by means of multiple linear regression models, explaining a significant part of their variability. The proposed method is transferable to other datasets, levels, and regions. Third, we assessed the use of spatio-temporal metrics derived from LULC maps to identify urban growth spatial patterns. We applied LULC change models to simulate different long-term scenarios of urban growth following various spatial patterns on diverse baseline urban forms. Then, we computed spatio-temporal metrics for the simulated scenarios, selected the most explanatory by applying a discriminant analysis and classified the growth patterns using clustering methods. Finally, we identified empirical relationships between socio-economic indicators and their change over time with the spatial structure of the built and natural elements in up to 600 urban areas from 32 countries. We employed random forest regression models and the spatio-temporal metrics were able to explain substantially the variability of socio-economic variables. This confirms that spatial patterns and their change are linked to socio-economic indicators. This work contributes to a better understanding of urban growth patterns and improves knowledge about the relationships between urban spatial structure and socio-economic factors, providing new methods for monitoring and assessing urban sustainability by means of LULC databases, which could be used by researchers, urban planners and decision-makers to ensure the sustainable future of urban environments. [Termes IGN] vergerRésumé : (auteur) C-band radar remote sensing is a suitable tool for monitoring agricultural areas on a large scale, providing access to information on vegetation such as plant biomass, or on the surface water content of the soil. Recent studies suggest that the water state and the physiological functioning of trees influence radar response leading to marked daily profiles of both radar backscattering coefficient and temporal coherence. The objective of this paper is to make a preliminary comparison between the temporal evolution of Sentinel-1 radar data and in situ radar measurements over a Mediterranean olive orchard located in Morocco. In situ radar data consist in quad polarizations measurements realized from a 20m high tower, every 15 minutes, for the period extending from May 2019 to October 2020.
