[Termes IGN] Tamarix (genre)Résumé : (auteur) South Africa is home to a native Tamarix species, while two were introduced in the early 1900s to mitigate the effects of mining on soil. The introduced species have spread to other ecosystems resulting in ecological deteriorations. The problem is compounded by hybridization of the species making identification between the native and exotic species difficult. This study investigated the potential of remote sensing in identifying native, non-native and hybrid Tamarix species recorded in South Africa. Leaf- and canopy-level classifications of the species were conducted using field spectroradiometer data that provided two inputs: original hyperspectral data and bands simulated according to Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, SPOT-6 and WorldView-3. The original hyperspectral data yielded high accuracies for leaf- and plot-level discriminations (>90%), while promising accuracies were also obtained using Landsat-8, Sentinel-2 and Worldview-3 simulations (>75%). These findings encourage for investigating the performance of actual space-borne multispectral data in classifying the species. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (auteur) The measurement of leaf optical properties (LOP) using reflectance and scattering properties of light allows a continuous, time-resolved, and rapid characterization of many species traits including water status, chemical composition, and leaf structure. Variation in trait values expressed by individuals result from a combination of biological and environmental variations. Such species trait variations are increasingly recognized as drivers and responses of biodiversity and ecosystem properties. However, little has been done to comprehensively characterize or monitor such variation using leaf reflectance, where emphasis is more often on species average values. Furthermore, although a variety of platforms and protocols exist for the estimation of leaf reflectance, there is neither a standard method, nor a best practise of treating measurement uncertainty which has yet been collectively adopted. In this study, we investigate what level of uncertainty can be accepted when measuring leaf reflectance while ensuring the detection of species trait variation at several levels: within individuals, over time, between individuals, and between populations. As a study species, we use an economically and ecologically important dominant European tree species, namely Fagus sylvatica. We first use fabrics as standard material to quantify measurement uncertainties associated with leaf clip (0.0001 to 0.4 reflectance units) and integrating sphere measurements (0.0001 to 0.01 reflectance units) via error propagation. We then quantify spectrally resolved variation in reflectance from F. sylvatica leaves. We show that the measurement uncertainty associated with leaf reflectance, estimated using a field spectroradiometer with attached leaf clip, represents on average a small portion of the spectral variation within a single individual sampled over one growing season (2.7 ± 1.7%), or between individuals sampled over one week (1.5 ± 1.3% or 3.4 ± 1.7%, respectively) in a set of monitored F. sylvatica trees located in Swiss and French forests. In all forests, the spectral variation between individuals exceeded the spectral variation of a single individual at the time of the measurement. However, measurements of variation within individuals at different canopy positions over time indicate that sampling design (e.g., standardized sampling, and sample size) strongly impacts our ability to measure between-individual variation. We suggest best practice approaches toward a standardized protocol to allow for rigorous quantification of species trait variation using leaf reflectance. [Termes IGN] spectroradiomètreRésumé : (auteur) Successful retrieval of leaf area index (LAI) from hyperspectral remote sensing relies on the proper selection of indices or multivariate models. The objectives of the research work were to identify best vegetation index and multivariate model based on canopy reflectance and LAI measured at different growth stages of wheat. Comparison of existing indices revealed optimized soil-adjusted vegetation index (OSAVI) as the best index based on R2 of calibration, validation and root mean square error of validation. Proposed ratio index (RI; R670, R845) and normalized difference index (NDI; R670, R845) provided comparable performance with the existing vegetation indices (R2 = 0.65 and 0.62 for RI and NDI, respectively, during validation). Among the multivariate models, partial least squares regression (PLSR) model with Hyperion band configuration performed the best during validation (R2 = 0.80 and RMSE = 0.58 m2 m−2). Our results manifested the opportunities for developing biophysical products based on satellite sensors. [Termes IGN] spectroradiomètreRésumé : (auteur) The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on the Terra spacecraft is completing two decades of successful Earth observations, providing the scientific community with numerous products and supporting applications, such as land surface cover, sea surface temperature, aerosol properties, and vegetation. The 20 reflective solar bands (RSBs) cover a wavelength range from 0.41 to 2.1 μm and are calibrated primarily using a solar diffuser (SD), with lunar measurements and Earth-view (EV) response trends from desert sites used for the response versus scan-angle (RVS) characterization. Prelaunch analysis showed that a few short-wavelength RSBs of Terra MODIS are particularly sensitive to the polarization of the incident light, with on-orbit results further indicating that the polarization sensitivity has experienced changes that are wavelength, mirror side (MS), and scan-angle dependent. Although the primary calibrator, the SD, should provide an unpolarized light, supplemental inputs from the EV response trends used in the RVS characterization are impacted by the Earth scene polarization. The EV trends, uncorrected for polarization, pose a significant challenge in the RVS characterization for the short wavelength bands (3, 8, 9, and 10), therefore impacting the long-term trends and uncertainty characterization. Previous studies from the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG) have independently estimated the polarization correction to be applied on the calibrated products to mitigate the impacts to some extent. In this article, the RVS is characterized using the EV response trends after correcting for the polarization effects. Results indicate a significant improvement in the long-term trending, reduced uncertainties in the forward prediction, and a more accurate per-pixel uncertainty provided by the uncertainty index (UI) in the MO... [Termes IGN] spectroradiomètreRésumé : (auteur) Unmanned aircraft system (UAS)-mounted spectroradiometers offer a new capability to measure spectral reflectance and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence at detailed canopy scales. This capability offers potential for upscaling and comparison with airborne and space-borne observations [e.g., the upcoming European Space Agency (ESA) Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) satellite mission]. In this respect, the accurate spatial characterization and georeferencing of the UAS acquisition footprints are essential to unravel the origin and spatial variability of optical signals acquired within the extent of airborne/satellite pixels. In this article, we present and validate a novel algorithm to georeference the footprint extent of a nonimaging spectroradiometer mounted on a multirotor UAS platform. We used information about the spectroradiometer position and orientation during flight and about topography of observed terrain to calculate the footprint geolocation. In a recursive process, the field of view (FOV) of the spectroradiometer projected on the ground. Multiple FOV ground projections retrieved during a spectroradiometer reading (i.e., a single integration time) were aggregated to calculate the footprint extent. The spatial accuracy of the footprint geolocation was validated by applying the georeferencing algorithm on checkpoint pixels of image acquired with a comounted digital camera. Geolocations of the checkpoint pixels, which served as a proxy for the spectroradiometer footprint, were successfully compared with surveyed ground checkpoints. Finally, the spectral and radiometric quality of UAS-acquired reflectance signatures was compared with ground-measured reflectance of four natural targets (three different types of grass and a bare soil), and a strong agreement was observed.
