[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) This paper explores the application of an agent based methodology to the problem of automated road generalisation. It focuses on the generalisation of one single road feature in the case of winding mountain roads, and its implications on the surrounding road network. The aim is to ensure legibility of the road symbol under scale changes, i.e. mainly to avoid coalescence. The solution proposed here is based on the multi-agent framework developed as part of the European AGENT project. It uses a previous approach in automated road generalisation that consists of decomposing the road into parts in order to isolate the coalesced portions, and then handle those portions individually with tailored algorithms. The paper presents the decomposition process in terms of agent modelling. A worked example of the process is presented. A discussion of the results includes comparison with other possible approaches to automated road generalisation. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) The objective of cartographic generalisation is to simplify geographic data in order to create legible maps when scale decreases. This demonstration presents the implementation of a work in progress, aiming at defining a multi-agent, multi-level solution for generalisation. The demonstration introduces the basics of cartographic generalisation and shows some aspects of the model currently being developed, including parameterisation and detailed execution of some interactions, as well as results. [Termes IGN] système multi-agentsRésumé : (auteur) The objective of cartographic generalisation is to simplify geographic data in order to create legible maps when scale decreases. It often requires to reason at different levels of abstraction (e.g. a building, a city). To automate this process, Multi-Agent approaches have been used for several years. Map objects (e.g. buildings) are modelled as autonomous entities that try to solve constraints through appropriate transformations. Yet, those approaches are not able to deal with all situations that appear between cartographic objects in a map. Indeed, though a map intrinsically involves objects that belong to several description, scale or organisation levels, there is no explicit multi-level representation in agent-based cartographic models. Thus we assume that the use of a multi-level multi-agent model would improve the automated generalisation process. Especially, the PADAWAN model is a multi-agent model offering multi-level capabilities which meet quite well the requirements for the multi-level organisation of cartographic objects. In this paper, we expose how we use this model on the one hand, to reify multi-level relations between cartographic agents, and on the other hand, to represent the constraints and the actions proposed to solve them, as interactions between the agents. [Termes IGN] seuillageRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this paper is to explore and describe a method of automated generalization designed to produce a map which strikes a balance between cartographic and hydrologic representations. Following a discussion of scholarly literature on generalization, we describe a novel method for automated generalization of hydrographic stream data, using the National Hydrography Data Set (NHDPlus) as an example. Traditional hydrography shows a fairly uniform density of stream flowlines over space. While this is pleasing to the eye, traditional methods tend to under-represent rivers in humid areas and over-represent them in arid areas. We address this problem through a method in automated generalization to produce a high-quality presentation of hydrographic data, suitable for display as a wall map or in an atlas. Streams are pruned based on a variable flow threshold, derived from the local mean annual precipitation by a regression equation. After running the model using different parameters, we produce a more satisfactory portrayal of stream networks in the United States that communicates the flow of water through rivers and reflects the regional climate. Specific advantages in generalizing with variable flow threshold include (1) the method allows for fine gradations in output scale; (2) the output maps tend to minimize density variations in the raw data; (3) the subjective criteria are easily derived; and (4) the method can be performed rapidly on large data sets, as long as the stream data has been enriched with reliable flow rates. [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (Auteur) A new method of cartographic line simplification is presented. Regular hexagonal tessellations are used to sample lines for simplification, where hexagon width, reflecting sampling fidelity, is varied in proportion to target scale and drawing resolution. Tesserae constitute loci at which new sets of vertices are defined by vertex clustering quantization, and these vertices are used to compose simplified lines retaining only visually resolvable detail at target scale. Hexagon scaling is informed by the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem. The hexagonal quantization algorithm is also compared to an implementation of the Li–Openshaw raster-vector algorithm, which undertakes a similar process using square raster cells. Lines produced by either algorithm using like tessera widths are compared for fidelity to the original line in two ways: Hausdorff distances to the original lines are statistically analyzed, and simplified lines are presented against input lines for visual inspection. Results show that hexagonal quantization offers advantages over square tessellations for vertex clustering line simplification in that simplified lines are significantly less displaced from input lines. Visual inspection suggests lines produced by hexagonal quantization retain informative geographical shapes for greater differences in scale than do those produced by quantization in square cells. This study yields a scale-specific cartographic line simplification algorithm, following Li and Openshaw's natural principle, which is readily applicable to cartographic linework. Open-source Java code implementing the hexagonal quantization algorithm is available online.
