[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Manual cartographic generalization is a simultaneous process. However, most automatic approaches so far have been sequential ; generalization operators are applied one at a time in a certain order. This has been the case both for model generalization (generalization of the conceptual model) and graphic generalization. Our research seeks to demonstrate that the graphic part of cartographic generalization can be formulated as an optimization problem and accordingly be solved in a single step. This paper deals with several issues regarding this optimization approach. Firstly, a set of appropriate analytical constraints for the generalization process is given, as well as rules for when to apply these constraints. In our approach, we are limited to formulating these constraints on point locations. Secondly, leastsquares adjustment is proposed to find the optimal solution according to the constraints. Finally, the conjugate gradients method is recommended for solving the normal equations. A prototype system for simultaneous graphic generalization has been implemented in C++, which communicates with a commercial map production system. Results from three tests of the prototype system are included in the paper. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Today, more and more (semi-) automatic tools and techniques are getting available, that allow for an efficient capture of more and more detailed 3D city models. With the availability of such data, the question rises, how these typically huge data sets can efficiently be handled, manipulated, analysed and visualized. Concerning visualization, the Level of Detail (LOD) concept from Computer Graphic provides a mechanism to only present that information, that is currently visible in an adequate resolution level. The problem, however, is how such a multi-scale representation of buildings can be automatically gained. This generation is a generalization problem. In the paper a concept is sketched, that relies on the representation of buildings in terms of Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG). Firstly, the complex building shape has to be transformed into CSG, which involves a segmentation of the building into its relevant parts. Secondly, generalization mechanisms can operate on the CSG-tree. Finally, the transition between neighbouring generalization levels is achieved using a differential scheme, where only the differences between adjacent generalization levels are stored, instead of the whole models. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes the construction of land use classes during semiautomated generalization of a land cover map. the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) has been responsible for the creation of the CORINE Land Cover Map of Great Britain (CLCMGB), using the ITE Land Cover Map of Great Britain (LCMGB) as the primary input. Several of the CORINE land cover classes are more accurately described as 'land use' classes, (e.g. airports and construction sites). Since a land cover class (as identified on the LCMGB) could be related to several uses, the CORINE land use classes had to be identified separately from the CORINE land cover classes, within the generalization procedure. This was done using traditional methods of visual image interpretation, combined with the extensive use of ancillary land use information. The interactive creation of the land use classes described in this paper is the main component that did not use wholly automated methods; 95% of the CLCMGB was created using automated methods. This paper describes the mapping of the land use classes in detail.
