[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The generalization of area features is a very important topic in digital map generalization, particularly in thematic map generalization. The operations used in area generalization, will cause changes in the geometry and thematic attributes of area features and the topological relationships between them. Very limited quantitative measures, especially for semantics, are available to describe the effect of generalization when multiple objects are involved or when the entire map needs to be characterized. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide some quantitative measures for the changes (especially in semantics) that have occurred during generalization. A set of quantitative measures of data quality, i.e. accuracy, consistency, and completeness, has been developed to assess such effects. The effect of generalization on area features are compared between two approaches, geometry-based merging and theme-based aggregation. An experimental test has also been carried out to illustrate their differences in terms of the proposed quality measures, which demonstrates the practical usefulness of these measures. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Some research in map generalization techniques using the agent paradigm have allowed to progress significantly toward automation. These models allow the computation of discrete transformations of the objects but are not adapted for continuous transformations such as deformations. Our challenge is to allow these models to manage such continuous transformations. As an application, we aim to introduce field data such as the relief in agent-based generalization models. Many relationships exist between fields and objects (especially buildings, roads and rivers). Our concern is to preserve these relationships. We propose to allow the geographic agents to deform a field during the generalization process. To attain this objective, we propose a model: 1- To measure and interpret relationships between fields and objects (this allows to define new constraints), 2- To compute fields deformations under objects stretching, 3- To manage the automatic trigger of these measurements and deformations in the existing agent based generalization models. We propose to model the field as a triangulation, and to explicit some shape preservation constraints on the points, segments, angles and triangles composing the field. When a point is stretched, its displacement propagates to its neighbors using a multi-agent convergence method we have built. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present an algorithm that performs simplification of large geographical maps through a novel use of graphics hardware. Given a map as a collection of non-intersecting chains and a tolerance parameter for each chain, we produce a simplified map that resembles the original map, satisfying the condition that the distance between each point on the simplified chain and the original chain is within the given tolerance parameter, and that no two chains intersect. In conjunction with this, we also present an out-of-core system for interactive visualization of these maps. We represent the maps hierarchically and employ different pruning strategies to accelerate the rendering. Our algorithm uses a parallel approach to do rendering as well as fetching data from the disk in a synchronous manner. We have applied our algorithm to a gigabyte sized map dataset. The memory overhead of our algorithm (the amount of main memory it requires) is output sensitive and is typically tens of megabytes, much smaller than the actual data size.
