[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) To generalise digital data, some efficient algorithms are required. Recent researches have enriched the library of algorithms allowing interactive generalisation of GIS. The automation of the process requires that the generalisation system is able to find automatically 'where and how to generalise'. The 'where' depends on the capacity of analysis: the system should be able to identify which objects do not respect the specifications. The 'How' depends on the existence of procedural knowledge which are rules that connect conflicts with the algorithms which are supposed to solve such conflicts. The AGENT prototype has been developed to provide the geographical objects with the capacity to qualify themselves (i.e. to recognise automatically the conflicts) and to apply appropriate algorithms to solve the existing conflicts. Moreover, a mechanism of control has been developed in order to backtrack and try another algorithm whenever the results are not as good as required. This paper explains the principles of self-generalisation at different level of details as well as the importance of spatial analysis for generalisation. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Recent models and systems of generalisation allow to produce new representations of geographical information according to generalisation constraints. One of the shortcomings is that they still can not be tuned easily according to different user needs. In the present paper, we propose an implemented system made of web interface and specific modelling and engine that proposes a user with a set of already generalised objects used to identify his needs. The principle is to create a sample data base that contains the information related to the constraints used to obtain a large set of different types of generalisation. These samples are proposed to the user who chooses the solutions that look like what he is looking for. Behind the interface, the system analyses the answers to gradually converge towards the optimal final parameter values, if possible. Natural language has been added for the first step of the query to being more flexibility and to allow some qualitative reaction of the user (such as 'bigger' or 'with less details'). As a first try the work has been limited to the generalisation of buildings but the data modelling has been conceived in a generic way to allow the extension to other types of objects. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The British Geological Survey is recognizing the consumer's need for customized 'builtforpurpose'geoscientific data sets. It is witnessing a move away from being merely producers of standard scale cartographic products. This research proposes an automated tool for the generalization of geological maps, which may assist the organization in meeting these demands. The research shows that in order to derive a coarse scale geological map from a fine scale geological database there is a requirement for contextual sensitivity. To achieve an appropriate result the interaction between the themes represented on the map must be considered and should reflect the interaction of geological objects in the real world. A case study is presented which illustrates how standard cartographic generalization operations can be combined, using a rule base, into a partially automated process to generalize a geological data set from 1.50 000 to 1.250 000 scale. Independent geoscientific professionals evaluated the results from the case study. The tool provides consistency and tracabilty in the generation of multiscale geoscientific data. The evaluation suggests that, with further research, higher levels of autonomous generalization are achievable. In its current form it is a highly useful tool as a testbed for defining generalization requirements in geological mapping, an aid to the production of standard scale maps and a basis for creating customer specific data sets. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) A method is presented for generalising cartographic lines using an approach based on determination of their structure. Constrained Delaunay triangulation is used to construct a skeleton of the space surrounding the lines and hence represent line features in terms of skeleton branches. Several statistical measures are used to characterise the triangulation branches. The measures enable selective generalisation of different types of line feature, leading to the possibility of userspecification of the style of generalisation. In our implementation of the approach, the triangulation is updated dynamically to allow both sides of multiple lines to be processed, while guaranteeing topological consistency between the resulting generalised lines. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) It has been widely recognized that, in order to automate the map generalization process, cartographic knowledge needs to be formalized. One method of knowledge acquisition is to analyse existing maps. Previous studies have concentrated on describing the phenomena on the surface. A typical example is the percentage change of the number of symbols or the percentage of open space on smaller scale maps. This study aims to go one step further, i.e. to analyse the association such changes with thematic attributes. In this study, road features on topographic maps of Hong Kong from 1:1000 to 1:200 000 are studied; six types of thematic attributes, i.e. 'type', 'length', 'width', 'number of lanes', 'number of traffic ways' and 'connectivity', are considered; and two statistic parameters, Lambda and Somers' Delta, are employed. It has been discovered that the dependence of road elimination on these attributes occurs in the following order : type (0.73), length (0.53), number of lanes (0.48), number of traffic directions (0.41), width (0.36) and connectivity (0.19). If these numbers are normalized into percentages, then these values become: type (27%), length (20%), number of lanes (18%), number of traffic directions (15%), width (13%) and connectivity (7%). Such results could be used to formulate an overall weight to determine whether a particular road should be deleted, merged or combined in the generalization process, in order to retain a certain proportion of roads at a smaller scale.
