[Termes IGN] SingapourRésumé : (auteur) Natural and human-made features are not exclusive in settlements but interact across time and space, placing the context in constant evolution. The purpose of this paper is to search for the influence of terrain, a natural feature, on the configuration of the street network, a human-made feature, by analysing the results of two transition states of cellular automata used to model street networks. This work uses data from open-source projects and open-source applications. The first transition state models the street network considering the neighbourhood rules and randomness, assuming the natural terrain and street are exclusive. The second transition state models the street network as the product of characteristics of the terrain, neighbourhood rules, and randomness, thus assuming the natural terrain and street network interacting with one another. The model is run thirteen times for four different cities by varying the terrain characteristics and calibrated by comparing the simulated street maps with recent street maps. The results are compared and found that the CA model with the second transition state yields better simulation results than the first transition state. In one of the four cities studied, the first transition state results are similar to a specific state of the second transition state, indicating a weak inter-connectedness between the terrain and the street network in the mega-city. Further research can reveal whether the amount of inter-connectedness is specific to the city’s terrain or size. The recognition of the inter-connectedness of the road to terrain can help plan for resilient human settlements. We match roads in the onboard images to the reference road vector map, and realize successful localization over areas as large as a whole city. The road network matching problem is treated as a point cloud registration problem under the homography transformation and solved under the hypothesize-and-test framework. To tackle the point cloud registration problem, a global projective-invariant feature is proposed, which consists of two road intersections augmented with their tangents. In addition, we propose the necessary conditions for the features to match. This can reduce the candidate matching features, thus accelerating the search to a great extent. These matching candidates are first “filtered” with the model consistency check in parameter space and then tested with similarity metrics to identify the correct transformation. The experiments show that our method can localize an aerial image over an area larger than 1000 km 2 within several seconds on a single CPU. Although dozens of methods have been proposed, current techniques suffer from two main shortcomings: the quality of the produced road networks is still far from those produced manually, and the methods are slow, making them not scalable to large inputs. In this paper, we present a fast four-step density-based approach to construct a road network from a set of trajectories. A key aspect of our method is the use of an improved version of the Slide method to adjust trajectories to build a more compact density surface. The network has comparable or better quality than that of state-of-the-art methods and is simpler (includes fewer nodes and edges). Furthermore, we also propose a split-and-merge strategy that allows splitting the data domain into smaller regions that can be processed independently, making the method scalable to large inputs. The performance of our method is evaluated with extensive experiments on urban and hiking data. Mobile Mapping System (MMS) equipped with a high-density LiDAR scanner has the possibility to be applied to estimate DBH of roadside trees using point clouds. In this study, we propose a method for detecting roadside trees and estimating their DBHs automatically from MMS point clouds. In our method, point clouds captured using the MMS are mapped on a 2D image plane, and they are converted into a wireframe model by connecting adjacent points. Then, geometric features are calculated for each point in the wireframe model. Tree points are detected using a machine learning technique. The DBH of each tree is calculated using vertically aligned circles extracted from the wireframe model. Our method allows robustly calculating the DBH even if there is a hump at breast height. We evaluated our method using actual MMS data measured in an urban area in Tokyo. Our method achieved a high extraction performance of 100 percent of precision and 95.1 percent of recall for 102 roadside trees. The average accuracy of the DBH was 2.0 cm. These results indicate that our method is useful for the efficient management of roadside trees. However, photogrammetric meshes suffer from severe texture problems, particularly in typical road areas, owing to occlusion. This paper proposes a structure-aware completion approach to improve mesh quality by seamlessly removing undesired vehicles. Specifically, a discontinuous texture atlas is first integrated into a continuous screen space by rendering trough a graphics pipeline. The rendering also records the necessary mapping for deintegration to the original texture atlas after editing. Vehicle regions are masked by a standard object detection approach, namely, Faster RCNN. Subsequently, the masked regions are completed, guided by the linear structures and regularities in the road region; this is implemented based on PatchMatch. Finally, the completed rendered image is deintegrated to the original texture atlas, and the triangles for the vehicles are also flattened so that improved meshes can be obtained. Experimental evaluation and analysis are conducted on three datasets, which were captured with different sensors and ground sample distances. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can produce quite realistic meshes after removing the vehicles. The structure-aware completion approach for road regions outperforms popular image completion methods, and an ablation study further confirms the effectiveness of the linear guidance. It should be noted that the proposed method can also handle tiled mesh models for large-scale scenes. Code and datasets are available at the project website.
