Still, the interplay among the scattering mechanisms taking place at such a high incidence and their implications on the backscatter information content is often disregarded. This article investigates, through an experimental and numerical study, the S-1 sensitivity to the surface soil moisture (SSM) over agricultural fields observed at low (~33°) and high (~43°) incidence angles and quantifies the impact of the incidence angle on the SSM retrieval accuracy. The study sites are the Apulian Tavoliere (Italy) and REd de MEDición de la HUmedad del Suelo (REMEDHUS) (Spain), which are both instrumented with a hydrologic network continuously measuring SSM. At low incidence angles, results confirm that for crops such as wheat and barley, dominated in C-band by surface scattering, there exists a good sensitivity of S-1 VV to SSM. At high incidence angles, the sensitivity to SSM holds through the combination of the soil attenuated and double bounce scattering. Conversely, over crops dominated by volume scattering, such as sugar beet, the S-1 VV signal is not correlated with the in situ SSM observations, neither at low nor at high incidence. For all the crops, the sensitivity of S-1 to SSM in VH is found significantly lower than in VV. The impact of the incidence angle on the SSM retrieval has been studied with a recursive algorithm based on a short-term change detection approach. An upper and lower bounds for the worsening of the S-1 VV retrieval performance at far versus near range observations have been estimated. In the worst-case scenario, the root mean square error (RMSE) increases from ~0.056 m 3 /m 3 , at low incidence, to ~0.071 m 3 /m 3 , at high incidence. The mechanism that lowers the retrieval accuracy at high incidence angles is further investigated in the synthetic experiment and its impact on the RMSE is estimated in terms of the volume scattering contribution. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) Burgos, in Spain, due to its geographical and historical importance, which made it a politically, militarily, and administratively key city in the configuration of Spain throughout the history of the country, has a large amount of cartographic documentation. Therefore, it has been necessary to carry out different phases of work to collect and analyze the cartographic material available, as well as to specify the maps and plans that would be used to convey and structure the cartography of Burgos during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. However, we must take into account in any study that, despite advances in technology, including machines used to digitize these artifacts, there remains a degree of error, so the display of the map that the researcher observes is not as reliable as it should be. Taking into account the hypothetical character of the accuracy of the maps collected and used in this study, and in order to achieve its goals, a thematic analysis through selection, geolocation, and comparison with the current city map based on different criteria is proposed. Thanks to the rich material, this case can be extrapolated to other cities in the country and the process of making up a map during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries can be known in a deeper way. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In the past few decades, temperate forests have been negatively altered by numerous anthropogenic activities and by the impact of ongoing climate change. These changes may require management actions to help preserve some forest tree species. In this sense, highly-detailed knowledge of tree growth and survival across territorial and climatic gradients will be important for forest conservation. We developed a novel approach to determine the optimal zones of forest growth and expansion through climate suitability maps, using a dense tree-ring network of four forest species in Moncayo Natural Park and high-resolution climate data. Our results showed that the mixed-effects models developed using climate data and tree size were able to predict between 65 and 80% of growth variability along the climatic gradient. All studied species were influenced by climate, and the relationship between growth and climate significantly differed along the prevailing climate gradient. Moreover, the suitability maps showed that the current species distribution is limited, and their application may serve as a tool for adaptive management in forests subjected to climate change. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The aims of the study are the description of the distribution patterns of main forest tree species along complex environmental gradients and niche characterization, using the data from 772 plots from the third Spanish National Forest Inventory. Simultaneously, we would like to identify the relative contribution of spatial and environmental variation to the species compositional patterns. Spatially structured environmental and fine-scale spatial variables explained more tree compositional distribution than broad-scale spatial variables, suggesting that niche partitioning is the main process influencing forest species abundances along this gradient. However, vegetation compositional changes were mainly determined by the north–south topographic-climatic differences (primary coenocline), although steepness was also related to the particular location of some plant communities. Unimodal response curves dominate along the gradients, with tree species optima at different points, providing evidence of a sufficient amount of compositional turnover. Niche location of trait-related tree species is closely located. Tree species occupying environments with sharp contrast or transitional environments have broadest niches, whereas those species occupying localized habitats showed the narrowest niches. The methodology used provides an objective assessment of the shape of species' responses along complex ecological gradients, as well as of the spatial and environmental factors implicated in their distribution patterns using datasets from national forest inventories. The description of the main factors determining the gradients and the species distributions and niche characteristics will improve our ability to discuss potential conservation management goals or threats due to land uses changes and future climate change.
