[Termes IGN] prédictionRésumé : (Auteur) This paper compares two land change models in terms of appropriateness for various applications and predictive power. Cellular Automata Markov (CA-Markov) and Geomod are the two models, which have similar options to allow for specification of the predicted quantity and location of land categories. The most important structural difference is that CA-Markov has the ability to predict any transition among any number of categories, while Geomod predicts only a one-way transition from one category to one alternative category. To assess the predictive power, each model is run several times to predict land change in central Massachusetts, USA. The models are calibrated with information from 1971 to 1985, and then the models predict the change from 1985 to 1999. The method to measure the predictive power: 1) separates the calibration process from the validation process, 2) assesses the accuracy at multiple resolutions, and 3) compares the predictive model vis-A-vis a null model that predicts pure persistence. Among 24 model runs, the predictive models are more accurate than the null model at resolutions coarser than two kilometres, but not at resolutions finer than one kilometre. The choice of the options account for more variation in accuracy of runs than the choice of the model per se. The most accurate model runs are those that did not use spatial contiguity explicitly. For this particular study area, the added complexity of CA-Markov is of no benefit. [Termes IGN] transformation en cosinus discrèteRésumé : (Auteur) The standardization effort of the next ISO standard for compression of the still image, JPEG2000, has recently reached International Standard (IS) status. This wavelet-based standard outperforms the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) based JPEG in terms of compression ratio, as well as, quality. In this study, the performance of JPEG2000 is evaluated for aerial image compressions. Different compression ratios are applied to scanned aerial photos at the 1:5 000 scale. Both the image quality measurements and the accuracy of photogrammetric point determination aspects are examined. The evaluation of image quality is based on visual analysis of the objects in the scene and on the computation of numerical indices, including RMSE, entropy, and Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR). The geometric quality of JPEG2000 with different compression ratios is studied for some photogrammetric operations, including interior orientation, relative orientation, absolute orientation, and DSM generation. The objective of this study is to explore the possibility of JPEG2000 for replacing JPEG as a standard in photogrammetric operations. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Covering soils with vegetation during the fallow and planting seasons is one of the main ways to reduce water pollution, by restricting pollutant fluxes to aquatic systems. The bare soil/vegetation ratio monitoring can be carried out daily with a coarse spatial resolution using SPOT VEGETATION (1 km). Nevertheless, land-cover changes detected at a regional scale with this ratio may be due to winter vegetation cover changes as well as the influence of climatic events. Therefore, observed changes have to be validated from a local-scale analysis with higher spatial resolution data. The aim of this study is to develop a technique that allows high or low variations detected at a regional scale to be assessed from SPOT VEGETATION images with data acquired at a higher scale, SPOT High Resolution Visible and Infrared images in our case. In this study, the link between the images from the two sensors is achieved from the design of an artificial neural network method based on a Kohonen self-organizing map. The originality of this method lies in the use of external knowledge from ground observations and the use of temporal behavior to solve such a change of scale. Results of testing this method by using a potential change map based on the last few years' land-cover observations have shown a good correspondence between the observed and predicted bare soil/vegetation balance with regards to the spatial resolution difference between the two sensors. [Termes IGN] subsidenceRésumé : (Auteur) Satellite radar interferometry can be used to spatially monitor small vertical ground deformations. When millimeter accuracy is required, the differential interferometry technique is hampered by the ambiguity with atmospheric artifacts. It is also often difficult to obtain a precise evaluation of the kinematic evolution of ground deformations from a set of time, randomly distributed interferograms. We present the results of a least-squares approach coupled with a temporal filtering and applied to a large data set over the City of Paris. The mean deformation rate and a map of areas affected by time, non-linear deformation events are presented. We show that this approach, which provides a chronologically ordered set of phase screens, allows the retrieval of the kinematic Parameters of ground deformations as low as 1 to 2 mm per year. Subsiding areas have been detected, and their evolution in time has been quantified. Such an approach can be useful to fully characterize the kinematic evolution of ground deformations in major cities or desertic areas where large areas have a high degree of coherence and where millimeter accuracy is often required. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we identify two distinct notions of accuracy of land-use models and highlight a tension between them. A model can have predictive accuracy: its predicted land-use pattern can be highly correlated with the actual land-use pattern. A model can also have process accuracy : the process by which locations or land-use patterns are determined can be consistent with real world processes. To balance these two potentially conflicting motivations, we introduce the concept of the invariant region, i.e., the area where land-use type is almost certain, and thus path independent; and the variant region, i.e., the area where land use depends on a particular series of events, and is thus path dependent. We demonstrate our methods using an agent-based land-use model and using multitemporal land-use data collected for Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA. The results indicate that, using the methods we describe, researchers can improve their ability to communicate how well their model performs, the situations or instances in which it does not perform well, and the cases in which it is relatively unlikely to predict well because of either path dependence or stochastic uncertainty.
