The tropospheric delay correction is one of the crucial corrections that have to be taken into account when processing SLR data. Current conventional models of the troposphere delays assume a full symmetry of the atmosphere above SLR stations. Neglecting horizontal gradients in SLR solutions introduces a systematic error in SLR products, especially for the observations at low elevation angles, and leads to a deterioration of the consistency between SLR and other space geodetic techniques, such as global navigational satellite systems and very-long-baseline interferometry. We derive new mapping function coefficients, as well as first- and second-order horizontal gradients, all of which are based on numerical weather models, in order to properly consider the azimuthal asymmetry in SLR solutions. We test the enhanced mapping function and horizontal gradients on the solutions based on 11 years of SLR observations to LAGEOS-1/2 satellites and 1 year of SLR observations to Sentinel-3A. The consideration of azimuthal asymmetry of the atmosphere above the SLR stations has a systematic effect on SLR-derived products, such as station and geocenter coordinates and pole coordinates. Horizontal gradients in SLR solutions improve the consistency between SLR-derived pole coordinates and the combined IERS-C04 series by means of reducing the offset for the X and Y pole coordinates by 20 μas. The second-order horizontal gradients are negligible in SLR solutions; thus, including first-order gradients is sufficient for SLR solutions. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Convolutional neural networks offer a new approach to classifying high resolution imagery. We use the U-net neural network architecture to map the presence or absence of trees and large shrubs across the Australian state of Queensland. From a state-wide mosaic of 1 m resolution 3-band Earth-i imagery, a selection of 827 squares (1 km2) are manually labeled for the presence of trees or large shrubs, and these are used to train the neural network. The training is intended to capture the textures which are primary visual cues of such vegetation. The trained neural network has an accuracy on independent data of around 90%. The resulting map over the whole of Queensland (1.73 million km2) is intended to be manually checked, and edited where necessary, to provide a high quality map of woody vegetation extent to serve a range of government policy objectives. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Advances in techniques for automated classification of point cloud data introduce great opportunities for many new and existing applications. However, with a limited number of labelled points, automated classification by a machine learning model is prone to overfitting and poor generalization. The present paper addresses this problem by inducing controlled noise (on a trained model) generated by invoking conditional random field similarity penalties using nearby features. The method is called Atrous XCRF and works by forcing a trained model to respect the similarity penalties provided by unlabeled data. In a benchmark study carried out using the ISPRS 3D labeling dataset, our technique achieves 85.0% in term of overall accuracy, and 71.1% in term of F1 score. The result is on par with the current best model for the benchmark dataset and has the highest value in term of F1 score. Additionally, transfer learning using the Bergen 2018 dataset, without model retraining, was also performed. Even though our proposal provides a consistent 3% improvement in term of accuracy, more work still needs to be done to alleviate the generalization problem on the domain adaptation and the transfer learning field. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) An essential purpose of choropleth maps is the visual perception of spatial patterns (such as the detection of hot spots or extreme values). This requires an effective and as intuitive as possible comparison of color values between different regions. Accordingly, a number of design requirements must be considered. Due to the lack of empirical evidence regarding some elementary design aspects, an online study with 260 participants was conducted. Three closely related effects were examined: the “dark-is-more bias” (i.e., the intuitive ranking of color lightness), the “area-size bias” (i.e., the neglect of small areas, since these are less dominant in perception than larger ones) and the “data-classification effect” (i.e., attention to data classification when interpreting spatial patterns). For each hypothesis, one or more maps in connection with single or multiple choice questions were presented. Users should detect extreme values, central tendencies or homogeneities of values as well as comment on their task solving certainty. In general, the hypotheses regarding the mentioned effects could be confirmed by statistical analysis. The results are used to derive conclusions and topics for future research. In particular, further comparative empirical studies are recommended to determine the best possible map types for given applications, also considering alternatives to choropleth maps.
