[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Utilised globally across a wide range of applications, the ability to assess and understand LiDAR system capabilities represents an essential component in developing informed decisions on instrument selection and the logistical planning processes associated with site-specific limitations, project objectives and UAV operations. This study employed the new SLAM-based CSIRO “Hovermap” LiDAR system within a purpose-built environment as a testbed to experimentally investigate the interactive effects of fundamental UAV flight parameters on key metrics of LiDAR point clouds. Assessed within a full factorial design at both Site- and Target-levels, the UAV input variables of Pattern, ground Speed and above ground Altitude (AGL) were tested against the point cloud response variables Density, GSD and Accuracy as measured by RMSE and cloud-to-mesh Euclidian distance (‘Deviation’). A novel approach is described wherein the trajectory file of each flight was examined to determine the observed values of the input and response variables, remove noise and facilitate a standardised basis of comparison. Several new terms are introduced including Sampling Effort Variable (SEV, s⋅m−2), Effective Scan Rate (ESR, pts⋅s−1) and Effective Density Rate (EDR, pts⋅m−2⋅s−1) as well as an alternate approach to describe Pattern (s⋅m−1) as a scalar quantity. Reporting significant effects with all response variables at both Site- and Target-levels, the Range of the LiDAR sensor, closely associated with Altitude, presented as the single most important factor. Interestingly, the combination of the independent variables as SEV and EDRpred (‘predicted’ EDR) showed the highest coefficient of determination in the Site-level prediction of Density (AdjR2 = 0.894) and GSD (AdjR2 = 0.978,), respectively, whilst Range best correlated with observed RMSE (AdjR2 = 0.948) and Deviation (AdjR2 = 0.963). Predictive models returned mixed results when evaluated at the Target-level and highlights the need for further investigation to achieve the maximum benefit of high-resolution UAV LiDAR. The results presented here confirm that the CSIRO Hovermap performance is robust and, although variable depending on UAV flight parameters, is predictable and demonstrates the potential value in understanding system performance in harmonised flight planning to achieve project-specific objectives. Most prevailing waveform decomposition methods involve only a single wavelength, but these methods do not apply to full-waveform multispectral LiDAR (FWMSL) systems that simultaneously acquire spectral and geometric information. In this paper, we propose a new multispectral waveform decomposition (MSWD) method in order to explore the potential advantages of the FWMSL system. Both simulated data and measured data from our FWMSL system were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and relative error (rRMSE) metrics suggest that the decomposition results derived from MSWD exhibit a comparable overall fitting accuracy as a single wavelength waveform decomposition (SWWD) method. We also propose a new evaluation indicator, relative neighbor distance error (RNDE), to represent the relative error in the distance between adjacent targets. The simulation results present clear superiority of MSWD over SWWD in terms of discovering weak or overlapping components and retrieving accurate waveform parameters. The experimental results demonstrated a considerable improvement in RNDE (0.0100–0.0610) over the prevailing SWWD method (0.0566–0.2833). Unlike SWWD, MSWD initializes waveform components using mutually complementary wavelengths thus delivering higher completeness and accuracy. MSWD can be extended to other FWMSL or full-waveform hyperspectral LiDAR systems with additional wavelengths. [Termes IGN] SIG 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Cultural heritage has a great and inestimable value for communities. Unfortunately, several historical monuments are under deteriorating conditions mainly due to the lack of knowledge about their historical importance. Hence, it is necessary to provide efficient solutions to preserve these monuments. An effective approach for the preservation of cultural heritage should address two main aspects: documentation and information. The first aspect is related to methods that are used to document and digitally archive historic buildings by using appropriate materials and techniques for acquiring 3D spatial data. The second aspect aims to inform the population and policy makers about the importance of the historical heritage in a simple, effective, and interactive manner. In this paper, we propose an original approach to design a semantically enriched historical spatial database (SEH-SDB) for documentation and information of monumental heritage. First of all, a LiDAR acquisition of the historical heritage should be undertaken to capture its current condition. Then, the SEH-SDB database will be designed according to four semantic packages related to historical buildings that are (1) Components package, (2) Material package, (3) Historical package, and (4) Social package. The component package is based on the CityGML standard, which ensures a high interoperability for 3D models. The material package represents the material used in the construction of the building (wood, stone …). The historical package informs about historical elements that characterize the building and its temporal evolution. The social package aims to inform about the main social activities that may take place in the historical building. Based on the SEH-SDB, a 3D historical GIS is developed to provide rich semantic information about historical sites. At the end of this paper, a case study of a historical monument named “Ribat Banajah” in Jeddah Historical City in Saudi Arabia is presented. A digital archiving of the current state of this building is performed by using terrestrial LiDAR in combination with other classical surveying techniques (traversing, leveling, and GPS). Then, a building information model of this building is created and exported to the 3D HGIS designed for the documentation of historical buildings. [Termes IGN] segmentation en régionsRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate and high throughput extraction of crop phenotypic traits, as a crucial step of molecular breeding, is of great importance for yield increasing. However, automatic stem-leaf segmentation as a prerequisite of many precise phenotypic trait extractions is still a big challenge. Current works focus on the study of the 2-D image-based segmentation, which are sensitive to illumination and occlusion. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) can obtain accurate 3-D information with its active laser scanning and strong penetration ability, which breaks through phenotyping from 2-D to 3-D. However, few researches have addressed the problem of the LiDAR-based stem-leaf segmentation. In this paper, we proposed a median normalized-vector growth (MNVG) algorithm, which can segment stem and leaf with four steps, i.e., preprocessing, stem growth, leaf growth, and postprocessing. The MNVG method was tested by 30 maize samples with different heights, compactness, leaf numbers, and densities from three growing stages. Moreover, phenotypic traits at leaf, stem, and individual levels were extracted with the truly segmented instances. The mean accuracy of segmentation at point level in terms of the recall, precision, F-score, and overall accuracy were 0.92, 0.93, 0.92, and 0.93, respectively. The accuracy of phenotypic trait extraction in leaf, stem, and individual levels ranged from 0.81 to 0.95, 0.64 to 0.97, and 0.96 to 1, respectively. To our knowledge, this paper proposed the first LiDAR-based stem-leaf segmentation and phenotypic trait extraction method in agriculture field, which may contribute to the study of LiDAR-based plant phonemics and precise agriculture. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Wetlands are essential ecosystems which provide numerous benefits to society as a whole. But their functionality strongly depends on the hydrology and topography of the watershed, thus creating the need for monitoring. The use of terrestrial topographical survey methods can be a challenging task in wetlands, however. Flooded areas, muddy terrain and low vegetation can substantially slow down or even prevent the movement of surveyors, while tall vegetation can obstruct GPS reception. As this article outlines, advanced technologies such as airborne or UAS Lidar offer interesting alternatives for surveying the hydrology and topography of wetlands.
