[Termes IGN] visualisation 2DRésumé : (auteur) Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS) are now commonly acquiring lidar scans of urban environments for an increasing number of applications such as 3D reconstruction and mapping, urban planning, urban furniture monitoring, practicability assessment for persons with reduced mobility (PRM)... MMS acquisitions are usually huge enough to incur a usability bottleneck for the increasing number of non-expert user that are not trained to process and visualize these huge datasets through specific softwares. A vast majority of their current need is for a simple 2D visualization that is both legible on screen and printable on a static 2D medium, while still conveying the understanding of the 3D scene and minimizing the disturbance of the lidar acquisition geometry (such as lidar shadows). The users that motivated this research are, by law, bound to precisely georeference underground networks for which they currently have schematics with no or poor absolute georeferencing. A solution that may fit their needs is thus a 2D visualization of the MMS dataset that they could easily interpret and on which they could accurately match features with their user datasets they would like to georeference. Our main contribution is two-fold. First, we propose a 3D point cloud stylization for 2D static visualization that leverages a Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-like local geometry analysis. By skipping the usual and error-prone estimation of a ground elevation, this rendering is thus robust to non-flat areas and has no hard-to-tune parameters such as height thresholds. Second, we implemented the corresponding rendering pipeline so that it can scale up to arbitrary large datasets by leveraging the Spark framework and its Resilient Distributed Dataset (RDD) and Dataframe abstractions. [Termes IGN] télémètre laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) The parametric models used in Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) waveform decomposition routines are inherently estimates of the sensor's system response to backscattered laser pulse power. This estimation can be improved with an empirical system response model, yielding reduced waveform decomposition residuals and more precise echo ranging. We develop an empirical system response model for a Riegl VZ-400 terrestrial laser scanner, from a series of observations to calibrated reflectance targets, and present a numerical least squares method for decomposing waveforms with the model. The target observations are also used to create an empirical radiometric calibration model that accommodates a nonlinear relationship between received optical power and echo peak amplitude, and to examine the temporal stability of the instrument. We find that the least squares waveform decomposition based on the empirical system response model decreases decomposition fitting errors by an order of magnitude for high-amplitude returns and reduces range estimation errors on planar surfaces by 17% over a Gaussian model. The empirical radiometric calibration produces reflectance values self-consistent to within 5% for several materials observed at multiple ranges, and analysis of multiple calibration data sets collected over a one-year period indicates that echo peak amplitude values are stable to within ±3% for target ranges up to 125 m. Note de contenu :

[Termes IGN] hauteur des arbresRésumé : (auteur) The subject of this doctoral thesis is the non-spatial indices of horizontal differentiation that can be used as indicators of forest structural complexity, specifically as descriptors of tree size inequality. The body of the thesis focuses primarily on the indicators themselves, while the appended articles tackle issues mainly related to their practical estimation using airborne laser scanning (ALS) remote sensing. The overall research is framed in the context of developing a system of indicators that can be applied at pan-European level, whose implementation in practice is foreseen in the advent of national ALS surveying programmes.
A list of indicators available in the scientific literature for describing forest structural heterogeneity by means of horizontal differentiation was tested. Indices based on the theory of information demonstrated critical inconsistencies, which rendered them inadequate for describing tree size inequality. This was revealed using the theory on intrinsic ordering, and illustrated with diversity and equitability profiles. The use of Shannon, and similar indices based on generalized entropy, to describe diversity between size classes, which has been common practice, is therefore discouraged. The link between majorization and Lorenz ordering was established for the specific case of tree size distributions, discussing the reliability of analysing the Lorenz curve to fully describe size inequality in tree populations.
In forest science, the Lorenz curve relates stem frequency distributions to their corresponding basal area-weighted distributions. Indicators based on the Lorenz curve, such as the Gini coefficient (GC), were therefore chosen for their ALS-based estimation. Adding an indicator describing Lorenz curve’s asymmetry was deemed necessary for describing relative understorey development. Research demonstrated the convenience of using the basal area larger than the mean (BALM), as it defined the position of the Lorenz curve inflexion point, which depicts the quadratic mean diameter (QMD). It was observed that, when using Lorenz curves to describe forest structure, the position of the QMD should be compared with the Lorenz curve of a theoretical uniform DBH distribution, which represents maximum entropy. Accordingly, this thesis includes a discussion of how Lorenz ordering can be used as a method, providing a scale for simultaneously comparing relative dispersion and entropy.
In conclusion, the final recommended indicators are GC and BALM, since this bivariate description of forest structure fully characterises the relationships of relative dominance among trees in a forest population. The most similar neighbour (MSN) imputation of tree lists is defended as a substantially convenient method for predicting these indicators by ALS.Numéro de notice : 14976 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Thèse étrangère Note de thèse : PhD : Forest Sciences : University of Eastern Finland : 2015 En ligne : http://www.metla.fi/dissertationes/df205.htm Format de la ressource électronique : URL Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=78363 Fusion of Lidar and SAR data for land-cover mapping in natural environments / Clara Barbanson (2015)PermalinkLand Resources Monitoring, Modeling, and Mapping with Remote Sensing, ch. 17.
