[Termes IGN] vibrationRésumé : (Auteur) The distribution of laser pulses within conifer forest trees and canopies are examined by varying the rate of laser pulse emission and the inherent laser pulse properties (laser pulse energy, pulse width, pulse length, and roll-over or trigger time). In this study, an Optech, Inc. ALTM 3100 airborne lidar is used, emitting pulses at 50 kHz and 100 kHz, allowing for changes in laser pulse characteristics while also keeping all other survey parameters equal. We found that:
1. Pulses and associated characteristics emitted at 50 kHz penetrated further into the canopy than 100 kHz for a significant number of individual trees.
2. At tall tree plots with no understory, pulses emitted at 50 kHz penetrated further into the canopy than 100 kHz for a significant number of plots.
3. For plots with significant understory and shorter trees, pulses emitted at 100 kHz penetrated further into the canopy than 50 kHz. We suspect that this may be due, in part, to canopy openness.
Laser pulse energy and character differences associated with different laser pulse emission frequencies are likely a contributing factor in laser pulse penetration through the canopy to the ground surface. Efforts to understand laser pulse character influences on canopy returns are important as biomass and vegetation structure models derived from lidar are increasingly adopted. [Termes IGN] topographie localeRésumé : (Auteur) Research has shown the importance of measuring topography for surface change detection and that the use of remote sensing methods is ideal for this application. A prerequisite for measuring change is a historical data-set that covers the time period of interest. Many remote methods of topographic data collection such as lidar are relatively recent developments and therefore cannot provide records longer than about a decade. Alternatively, aerial photography has been in common use since the early 20th century and archives upwards of 50years are therefore not uncommon. While photogrammetry is dependent on well distributed, high quality ground control points (GCPs), such data has been successfully applied retroactively. Therefore, contemporary lidar data, which requires little ground-truth data, should be an ideal source of GCPs for controlling historical aerial photographs. This study aims to evaluate the success with which GCPs can be extracted from a high-resolution lidar data-set for controlling aerial photography for digital elevation model (DEM) production. Using a data-set collected in Upper Wharfedale, northern England, GCPs were measured both by means of a lidar data-set and by using traditional field-based methods. The results showed that while the use of lidar-derived ground control produced a DEM of inferior quality, increasing the number of GCPs used in the model produced results comparable to the GPS-controlIed DEM. These results are significant especially for surface change detection research in remote areas where high quality ground control is difficult to secure. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser scanning and image matching can today form the basis for the generation of digital terrain models (DTMs). In addition to the DTM, quality parameters are needed that describe the accuracy at a high level of detail, at best for every interpolated DTM point. Furthermore, other parameters are of interest, for example, the distance from each DTM point to the data point next to it. This paper presents a method to derive accuracy measures from the original data and the DTM itself. Its application is demonstrated with an example. The quality measures are suitable for informing users in detail about DTM quality and warning them of weakly determined areas. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Although operational for more than twenty years, Airborne Lidar Bathymetry (ALB) has rarely been used in riverine areas. The US Bureau of Reclamation adopted it to study how flow change in the Yakima Rivera affected fish habitat. The authors show that ALB offers accuracy and precision at least as good, if not better than that achieved in typical survey by boat with sonar and GPS. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) In a landscape bridges are ambiguous features in that they are extensions of the bare earth but they are also man made. Therefore, in a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) generation, depending on application it is necessary to keep or remove bridges. For this reason they have to be detected explicitly. A geometric bridge detection algorithm is proposed that is based on the idea that features can be detected in a landscape based on cross-sections (profiles) in a landscape. The topological information contained in the cross-sections are used to identify seed bridge points. The seed bridge points are then used to detect individual bridges. The bridge detection algorithm is novel in that the algorithm is blind to the shape of a bridge and is adaptable to different bridge designs. Therefore, bridges need not have parallel edges or uniform width. Furthermore, bridges can curve, split into parts, and contain holes. The bridge detection algorithm has been tested on various data sets and found to work very well in detecting bridges.
