[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) The paper investigates built-up areas expansion after the 1990 in one of the highly urbanized regions of Romania - Romanian Plain, in order to explore the urban sprawl phenomena and its temporal and regional disparities in relation to some of the main distance driving factors. The research uses Landsat 4/5 Thematic Mapper (TM), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM), and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) imagery to derive built-up areas and quantify their expansion over time in relation to fourteen distance explanatory factors: i.e. previous built-up areas, main road infrastructure, Bucharest city’s boundary, location of the urban centres classified according to demographic size and main economic function, forest land and water bodies. To estimate the influence of the predictors, the binary logistic regression was applied. Furthermore, to estimate the effectiveness of the predictor set in the variation of built-up areas expansion, the pseudo R2 was calculated and discussed. Moreover, to understand the future potential trend of urban sprawl and its spatial pattern, the probability maps were generated by integrating the regression coefficients of the statistically significant predictors into the spatial modeling. For the results performance assessment, the statistic Receiver Operating Characteristic and the pixel-based comparison between the real and predicted data were used. To assess possible differences at spatial and temporal scale, the analysis was carried out at regional level, for two periods: 1990–2002 and 2002–2018. In general, our findings show inverse relationship between the distance driving factors and built-up areas expansion, but the estimated predictive power suggests important disparities within the study area over the analysed periods. Overall, the statistical analysis indicate that the distance to previous build-up areas, distance to road infrastructure, distance to Bucharest and other large urban centres, and distance to urban centres with dominant industrial and service functions were more influential to urban sprawl after 1990. Furthermore, the predicted spatial data shows the highest potential of urban sprawl in the future around Bucharest, in the proximity of existing built-up areas and road infrastructure. Because of its predictive character, the present study is to be a useful tool for land managers and policy makers. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Mixed mountain forests with an uneven-aged structure are characterized by a high tree-growth variability making traditional age-dependent growth models inapplicable. Estimating site productivity is yet another impediment for modelling tree growth in such forests. Uneven-aged mixed-stand forests are known for their high resilience, resistance and productivity, and are being promoted as a suitable alternative to even-aged, pure plantations for climate change adaptation and mitigation. However, their growth must be accurately measured and predicted, but diameter at the breast height (dbh) increment models specifically designed for uneven-aged mixed mountain forests are still rare. Using permanent sampling network data and 465 increment cores, we built two age-independent dbh increment (id) models for the main species of the study area, namely Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). Mixed effects models and the algebraic difference approach were employed to develop id models based on empirical and commonly used theoretical growth functions. A past growth index was further developed and introduced in the model in order to explain the id variability. Several mixed effects calibration strategies were assessed in order to obtain the most accurate localized curve for new plots. Tree size, competition and biogeoclimatic variables were found to explain the id through the empirical growth function, while the growth index significantly improved the theoretical growth function for Norway spruce. The optimization of the calibration strategy for the mixed effects modelling framework enables the growth index implementation in forest practice as an accurate method for estimating site productivity. The accuracy of the two id models was similar: the root mean squared error of the empirical growth function varied between 0.940 and 1.042 cm for spruce, beech and fir, while the root mean squared error obtained through the theoretical growth function for spruce only was 1.105 cm. The basal area increment prediction at the plot level based on the theoretical growth function reached a root mean squared error of 0.043 m2 while using the empirical growth function the root mean squared error is 0.047 m2. The high accuracy obtained using age-independent models underlines their suitability for predicting growth in mixed uneven-aged forests. The developed models can be easily integrated into forest practice to accurately obtain id estimates. Applied forest management could absorb or enhance such an impact. In this context, we developed a new protective value index (PVI) that includes biometric and topographical indicators of forest stands. Using PVI and the LandClim model, we simulated 100 years with low- and high-intensity cuttings within three climate scenarios to analyze their influence on the protective value of forests included in the soil protection category. The management types had a low impact on PVI during the simulation period. However, the effects of moderate climate intensified in the second half of the simulation period. In contrast, the extreme climate had the highest impact on PVI and its variables throughout the whole period. The forest stands from lower elevation reached a higher protective value than intermediate and high elevation. Although the low-elevation forest stands are the most vulnerable to climate changes, the ongoing adaptation conducts to stands with higher protective value than stable forests from the higher elevation. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) 3D modelling of urban areas is an attractive and active research topic, as 3D digital models of cities are becoming increasingly common for urban management as a consequence of the constantly growing number of people living in cities. Viewed as a digital representation of the Earth’s surface, an urban area modeled in 3D includes objects such as buildings, trees, vegetation and other anthropogenic structures, highlighting the buildings as the most prominent category. A city’s 3D model can be created based on different data sources, especially LiDAR or photogrammetric point clouds. This paper’s aim is to provide an end-to-end pipeline for 3D building modeling based on oblique UAS images only, the result being a parametrized 3D model with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) CityGML standard, Level of Detail 2 (LOD2). For this purpose, a flight over an urban area of about 20.6 ha has been taken with a low-cost UAS, i.e., a DJI Phantom 4 Pro Professional (P4P), at 100 m height. The resulting UAS point cloud with the best scenario, i.e., 45 Ground Control Points (GCP), has been processed as follows: filtering to extract the ground points using two algorithms, CSF and terrain-mark; classification, using two methods, based on attributes only and a random forest machine learning algorithm; segmentation using local homogeneity implemented into Opals software; plane creation based on a region-growing algorithm; and plane editing and 3D model reconstruction based on piece-wise intersection of planar faces. The classification performed with ~35% training data and 31 attributes showed that the Visible-band difference vegetation index (VDVI) is a key attribute and 77% of the data was classified using only five attributes. The global accuracy for each modeled building through the workflow proposed in this study was around 0.15 m, so it can be concluded that the proposed pipeline is reliable. Two case studies, of different elevation, from Romania were selected to be considered for setting up some observation points as lookout points. Fuzzy viewshed analysis was performed to evaluate the degree of visibility of certain landscape components and was also used as a tool for territorial planning. The main results of the research were some particular viewshed analysis area according to the dominant visibility directions. This methodology may be useful to local authorities, which are the only responsible bodies for authorizing, creating and setting up lookout points in a given space or for organizing certain planning activities.
