[Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) Multitemporal European Remote Sensing satellites 1 and 2 (ERS1/2) and the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite 1 (JERS1) interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data from a boreal forest test site in Sweden (stem volumes up to 335 m/ha, equivalent to aboveground dry biomass of ~200 tons/ha) are studied in order to estimate stem volume using coherence and backscatter. The changes of JERS1 backscatter and ERS1/2 tandem coherence between images are consistent over the area studied, in contrast to ERS1/2 backscatter. A modelbased regression analysis has been performed, and the use of the model for inversion is discussed and compared with other approaches found in the literature. The model parameters are discussed in terms of their relation to wind speed and temperature. Results from the different acquisitions are combined to improve the stem volume estimation. The accuracy in terms of rms error (RMSE) for standwise estimated stem volume is 310 m/ha using ERS1/2 coherence. Using backscatter and coherence from JERS1 we obtain an RMSE of 33035 m/ha. Finally, conditions for accurate retrieval of stem volume using multitemporal InSAR observations are discussed. We conclude that G and Lband repeatpass InSAR can provide stem volume estimates in boreal forests with accuracies similar to those of standard in situ measurements. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Spaceborne differential radar interferometry has proven a remarkable potential for mapping ground deformation phenomena (e.g., urban subsidence, volcano dynamics, coseismic and postseismic displacements along faults, as well as slope instability). However, a full operational capability has not been achieved yet due to atmospheric disturbances and phase decorrelation phenomena. These drawbacks can often beat least partially- overcome by carrying out measurements on a subset of image pixels corresponding to natural or artificial stable reflectors [permanent scatterers (PS)] and exploiting long temporal series of interferometric data. This approach allows one to push the measurement precision very close to its theoretical limit (in the order of ~1 mm for Cband European Remote Sensing (ERS)like sensors). In this paper, the detection of both timeuniform and seasonal deformation phenomena is addressed, and a first assessment of the precision achievable by means of the PS Technique is discussed. Results highlighting deformation phenomena occurring in two test sites in California are reported (Fremont in the Southern Bay Area and San Jose in the Santa Clara Valley). [Termes IGN] spectrographeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a CCD (charge coupled device) camerabased hyperspectral imaging system designed for both stationary and airborne remote sensing applications. The system consists of a high performance digital CCD camera, an imaging spectrograph, an optional focal plane scanner, and a PC computer equipped with a frame grabbing board and camera utility software. The CCD camera provides 1280(h) x 1024(v) pixel resolution and true 12bit dynamic range. The imaging spectrograph is attached to the camera via an adapter to disperse radiation into a range of spectral bands. The effective spectral range resulting from this integration is from 457.2 nm to 921.7 nm. The optional focal plane scanner can be attached to the front of the spectrograph via another adapter for stationary image acquisition. The camera and the frame grabbing board are connected via a double coaxial cable, and the utility software allows for complete camera control and image acquisition. The imaging system captures one line image for all the bands at a time and an aircraft or the focal plane scanner serves as a mobile platform to carrv out push broom scanning in the alongtrack direction. The horizontal and vertical binning capability of the camera makes it possible to obtain images with various spatial (160, 320, 640 and 1280 pixels in image width) and spectral (32, 64, 128, 256, 512 and 1024 bands) resolutions. Formulas are presented to show the relationships among binning factors, spatial resolutions, and flight height and speed. Images with all 24 possible combinations of binning factors were collected in a laboratory setting. Airborne images with 128 bands and a width of 640 pixels were also obtained from agricultural fields, rangelands and waterways. Procedures were developed to correct geometric distortions of the airborne hyperspectral imagery. Preliminary image acquisition testing trials indicate that this CCD camerabased hyperspectral imaging system has potential for agricultural and natural resources applications. [Termes IGN] volcanologieRésumé : (Auteur) Advanced Land Imager (ALI), Advanced SpaceThermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), and Hyperion imaging spectrometer data covering an area in the Central Andes between Volcan Socompa and Salar de Llullaillaco were used to map hydrothermally altered rocks associated with young volcanic systems. Six ALI channels in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range (0.4-1.0 um) were useful discriminating between ferric-iron alteration minerals based on the spectral shapes of electronic absorption features seen in continuum-removed spectra. Six ASTER channels in the short wavelength infrared (1.0-2.5 um) enabled distinctions between clay and sulfate mineral types based on the positions of band related to Al-OH vibrational absorption features. Hypeimagery embedded in the broader image coverage of ALI and ASTER provided essential leverage for calibrating and improving the mapping accuracy of the multispectral data. This capability is especially valuable in remote areas of the earth where available geologic and other ground truth information is limited. [Termes IGN] rendement agricoleRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a comparison of Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) Advanced Land Imager (ALI) and Landsat-7. Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images collected over agricultural region in northwest Mexico. Across 115 fields a range of cover types, radiance measurements collected by ALI were within 3% of ETM+ for all five common bands. Crop discrimination was significantly improved with ALI compared ETM+, with an increase from 85% to 95% accuracy for distinguishing maize from wheat fields. This improvement was attributed to the greater SNR in ALI, as well as the unique information content of ALI band 4p (0.84-0.89 um), which may be to sensitivity to canopy water content. Yield predictions from reflectance-calibrated data did not reveal significant differences between the sensors. The greatest distinction between ALI and ETM+ was observed in the panchromatic band, with ALI providing more detailed information on inter and intrafield radiance differences, which show promise for precision agriculture applications. We conclude that ALI meets or exceeds ETM+ performance for agricultural applications evaluated here, thus providing a plausible option for continuity of the valuable Landsat record.
