Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] SvalbardRésumé : (Auteur) We describe a prototype ultrawideband radar. We show how the system was designed and how the hardware was developed for the radar prototype. Waveform generation, radar parameters, and signal processing for the stepped frequency waveform are discussed. The radar operates from 500 MHz to 3 GHz with a nominal resolution of 6 cm in air. The advantage of the stepped frequency approach over an impulse radar is better matching between the transmitted waveform and the receiver. We use range gating to improve the system dynamic range. The advantages are illustrated with laboratory measurements and field measurements from glacial ice and permafrost in Svalbard, showing penetration depths of 11 m. Antennas which do not require contact with the ground were developed and used in the experiments. The comparison using measurements from year 2003 to 2007 shows a general agreement between data and the model outputs. The improvement in the newer IRI model (IRI-2007) is evident with the measurements from the GRACE satellites orbiting at the higher altitude. We present the comparison between the models and data comprehensively for various cases in solar activity, local time, season, and latitude. The IRI models do not well predict the electron density in the years 2006 and later, when the solar activity is extremely low. The IRI models generally overestimate the electron density during local winter while they underestimate during local summer. In the equatorial region, the large difference at local sunrise lasts for all years and all seasons. The IRI models do not perform well in predicting the anomaly in the polar region such as the Weddell Sea Anomaly. These discrepancies are likely due to smoothed (12-month averaged) solar activity indices used in the IRI models and due to insufficient spherical harmonic representation not able to capture small spatial scales. In near future, further improvement on the IRI models is expected by assimilating those in situ satellite data by implementing higher resolution (spatial and temporal) parameterizations. [Termes IGN] interféromètrie par radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, significant progress has been made in developing theory and methods for modeling, detecting, and correcting ionospheric effects in low-frequency synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. While a large number of correction methods have been developed that differ in sensitivity, data needs, and spatiotemporal accuracy, a lack of performance requirements for ionospheric correction has prevented an evaluation of their suitability for operational implementation. Hence, this paper focuses on the development of performance requirements for the correction of ionospheric effects in low-frequency SAR data. The requirements are derived considering the data quality needs of a set of SAR applications and will ensure the SAR data after ionospheric correction to meet calibration specifications and maintain full performance during all ionospheric conditions. The proposed requirements can serve as a benchmark for a performance assessment of ionospheric correction methods and will help define their suitability for operational implementation. Requirements are determined for SAR polarimetry, SAR imaging, SAR interferometry, and ionospheric research. [Termes IGN] rétrodiffusionRésumé : (Auteur) Global backscatter data can be used for accurate synthetic aperture radar (SAR) performance estimation and optimizing instrument settings for SAR systems, e.g. the TerraSAR-X mission (TSM) and the TanDEM-X mission (TDM). The goal of this work is the generation of X-band backscatter maps by mosaicking images acquired by the TSM. An algorithm that allows the estimation of the on-ground backscatter, for any required polarization and incidence angle from the available data, is implemented. In this paper, the backscatter map generation algorithm is presented, together with the first results, obtained from the TSX-1 data. The validity of the interpolation models is also discussed, as they will form the basis for a future global statistical analysis and modeling of backscatter behavior in X-band SAR data.
