[Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) This paper analyzes the signal measured by optical remote sensors when acquiring data over a shaded part of an urban scene. The signal is much lower for this kind of target than for others because there is no direct downward irradiance. Here, a simple urban scene is considered with a shaded area. The signal observed by a high spatial resolution satellite sensor over an ordinary panchromatic band (500-700 nm) is computed thanks to a radiative transfer code [advanced modeling of the atmospheric radiative transfer for inhomogeneous surfaces (Amartis)] capable of dealing with ground topography and heterogeneity. The signal is analyzed, and it appears that environmental effects play a significant role. Moreover, because of the scattering that occurs at shorter wavelengths, it is also shown that a widening of the band to 440 nm sharpens the difference between signals coming from two different ground types (for whose the difference of reflectance is constant and equal to 0.1) by about 10%. This demonstrates that the band widening may be beneficial to observation in shadow, mainly because of scattering effects. A more realistic scene is also considered, in which each part is associated with realistic spectral properties. This simply shows the importance of the thematic in the choice of band, as it determines the effect of the widening. [Termes IGN] viticultureRésumé : (Auteur) A number of experiments using ground-based and airborne sensors have shown the high potential of L-band passive microwave radiometry for estimating and monitoring surface soil moisture. This has led to the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, a European Space Agency (ESA) Earth Explorer Opportunity mission. SMOS has the objective to observe soil moisture over land and sea surface salinity over sea, both key parameters for atmospheric, oceanographic and hydrological predictive models. In preparation of SMOS, the EuroSTARRS airborne campaign was carried out in November 2001. Multi-angular measurements of the surface brightness temperature at L-band (1.4GHz) at vertical polarization were acquired by the 'Salinity Temperature and Roughness Remote Scanner' (STARRS) radiometer from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL, USA) over several sites in Southern France, the Pyrenees and Eastern Spain. The chosen sites represent specific land conditions and vegetation canopies where microwave surface emission models need further investigation, and include: dense forests, shrubs and scrubland, mixed areas of different vegetation covers and areas with variable topography. This paper gives an overview of the experiment, including a discussion of the objectives, description of the sites, details of the microwave measurements and some first results of the campaign. First, a principal component analysis of the forest brightness temperature measured at different configurations illustrates the sensitivity of brightness temperature to biomass conditions for coniferous trees. Then, the microwave signature of the vegetation covers considered in this study-coniferous forest at Les Landes (France), mixed deciduous/coniferous stands at the Agre forest (France), shrubland, vineyards and orchards at the Valencia site (Spain) - is illustrated, in particular as regards to the dependance of the L-band emissivity to biomass conditions. [Termes IGN] précision infrapixellaireRésumé : (Auteur) The Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere (LBA) experiment in Amazonia represents a unique opportunity to make a comprehensive study of the Amazon region and its components ecosystems. To make sense of the field studies and to generalize the results from them, remote sensing techniques and comprehensive mapping are critical elements for producing region-wide science results. In this paper, we present the processing work done for one such mapping campaign, that of the JERS-1 L-band two season (low and high flood) SAR data collected in 1995 and 1996. Specifically, to make a useable resource for other LBA researchers to explore, the datasets from the two seasons had to be coregistred (to a sub-pixel level), radiometrically calibrated, and interpreted to verify the quality of the data. This paper describes the techniques used to achieve these goals and estimate of the land cover based on a simple classification of the data. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Snow cover has a substantial impact on processes involved in the interaction between atmosphere and surface, and the knowledge of snow parameters is important in both climatology and weather forecasting. With the upcoming launch of Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) instruments on Envisat, enhanced snow-mapping capabilities are foreseen. In this paper fully polarimetric C- and L-band airborne SAR data, ERS SAR and auxiliary data from various snow conditions in mountainous areas are analysed in order to determine the optimum ASAR modes for snow monitoring. The data used in this study are from the Norwegian part of the snow and ice experiment within the European Multi-sensor Airborne Campaign (EMAC'95) acquired in the Kongsfjellet area, located in Norway, 66°N, 14°E. Fully polarimetric C- and L-band SAR data from ElectroMagnetic Institute SAR (EMISAR), an airborne instrument operated by the Danish Center for Remote Sensing (DCR), were acquired in March, May, and July 1995. In addition, several ERS SAR, airborne photos, field and auxiliary data were acquired.
A larger separation between wet snow and bare ground in EMISAR C-VV polarisation data was found at high incidence angle (55°) compared to lower incidence angle (45°). Crosspolarized observations from bare ground, dry and wet snow in the incidence angle range 35° to 65° are below the specified Envisat ASAR noise floor of -20-22 dB. The backscattering angular dependency for wet snow and bare ground derived from EMISAR C-VV and ERS SAR data corresponds well, and agrees to some extent with volume and surface scattering model results. [Termes IGN] polarimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are affected by speckle noise, originated by the SAR system's coherent nature. The problem of speckle noise in one-dimensional (1-D) data is already solved, as speckle has a multiplicative characteristic. SAR polarimetry represents an extension to multidimensional data by the use of polarization wave diversity. As a consequence of the existence of a correlation degree between the SAR images, the 1-D speckle noise model cannot be extended to multidimensional SAR data. This paper is devoted to present a completely new speckle noise model for the complex covariance matrix describing polarimetric SAR data in the distributed scatterers case. As will be shown, this new model is able to identify which are the noise mechanisms in all the covariance matrix elements. The speckle noise model is validated by using real L-band polarimetric data acquired with the German E-SAR sensor.
